Smartphone season is almost upon us as Marques and Andrew talk through all of the latest smartphone rumors and what they're expecting to see this fall. Then, they react to some significant Tesla Supercharger news (it wouldn't be a Waveform episode otherwise), before discussing the new Nothing Ear(1) true wireless headphones that were finally released. Lastly, we close out the episode with a bit of a change-up: a brand-new competition that allows us to pit ourselves against all future guests. It's a fun one!

I'm an Android user & The thing about removing the charging port is that this port isn't just for charging! The main usage of this port for me is to that if I got a software brick , I can flash my phone firmware easily with the port If they took the port away it will complicate the software diagnosis and fixing way more + File transfer via cable is still very convenient

I have a feeling that if they actually get rid of the plug they will have some way around it. It's apple. They're pretty clever. Fancy new port in the sim tray slot or something. Idk.

Also, if your screen stops responding to touches, a port allows you to plug in a mouse.

I mean, for iPhones that doesn’t really matter since it’s pretty locked down. So at least in the scope of Apple there isn’t a lot standing in the way. They’ve done things a lot more disruptive than removing the ability to get a wired iTunes connection. As for a replacement for wired/diagnostics (which, mind you, would only be done by Apple staff), the running theory seems to be implementation of the iPad’s smart connectors since they transfer power and data.

I think that the main problem for the removal of the port it’s not charging but moving files. When I have to move 20-30 videos all together on my iPhone and I want to airdrop them on my Mac airdrop freezes every time. I need the cabe and the acquisition tool on the Mac. That’s my main concern even tho many people doesn’t shoot videos, so it’s a problem that not many people will have.

@@NomadPoker1 I am used to listening to audiobooks before sleep and I recently bought galaxy s21 ultra and because sleeping with wireless headphones is a pain in the ass for me (hard to find in the morning), I still need to use my old phone with a headphone jack for that😅

So my take on removing the charging port is when apple removed the headphone jack, they included a dongle in the box of the iphone 7, so people could still use their old headphones while they havent bought wireless headphones. If they want to remove the charging port they would need to provide at least the magsafe cord in the box if not the entire charger.

How many people missed the part when he was telling us about the eq for the nothing ear ,when he said normal ,more treble, more bass , and phone call the audio in the podcast changed to those eq settings .that was so freaking cool. Never seen someone be so creative in a podcast, but don't expect anything less from MKBHD. Your a legend man. It's around the 45 minute mark I guess

Best feature about onedrive is scanning with your phone on onedrive app to make a pdf that's now live in your onedrive for your computer to use. Need a good camera to scan well

I really wont ever be making the switch to wireless charing. Its just not efficient enough and I will always take the wire. Its likely to be the same for displays but there is a chance wireless connections will get stable enough for me to use wireless displays frequently

I'd say the main issue, which they highlighted is the majority of cars only have wired carplay. I think it'll take a few more years before wireless carplay in vehicles makes the move safe. So many people would get aggravated with the car not having that functionality.

Hot take. They can't make the iPhone portless the same year they dropped spatial audio for Apple music. Bluetooth can't support Dolby Atmos, which is part of spatial audio. And obviously, you can't plug a DAC into a portless device. Apple wouldn't be going to all of this trouble to promote spatial and then remove the potential to use it with iPhone, their by far most successful product (and the device people use for music most frequently). Also, let's remember the iPhone was and is designed as a content consumption device that's also a phone. My guess would be that they're working on a higher bandwidth audio protocol that will allow spatial and Atmos. Could be this year, I guess. But that will cannibalize the Airpods Max (unless that tech lies dormant inside awaiting the new iPhone). Basically, it's not going portless unless they have a way of doing hi res audio wirelessly.

Hey just an idea. What if apple made a MagSafe puck that, rather than being wired, plugged into a lightning cable. So just the MagSafe puck as a stand-alone product you could buy for 10 bucks that plugged into your existing lightning cable so that your lightning cable didn’t go into the landfill when they remove the port. Just saying might be feasible 🤷🏼‍♂️

8.884 sec. I am pretty sure this is the first time I have ever actually typed out the alphabet on a keeb. Honestly a lot of that was just singing the song in my head to remember where I was at. Can really tell that I don't do much for normal typing but really only use one half of the keyboard for shortcuts and hot keys in modeling work.
