I've had the Redmi for about a week and these are the things that made me choose it over the a53: 1. The capacitive fingerprint sensor is WAY better - more reliable and faster - than the a53 cheap optical sensor and trust me, this is a real deal breaker 2. The 120W charging with the brick IN the box is super convenient and while it's not great for the battery I usually use a 33W charger from my old Poco F3(which is still faster than what the a53 can do + you have to buy the charger) to preserve the battery and it still does 0-100% in less than an hour 3. The Redmi is cheaper, comes with the charging brick, has a better processor, and the JBL tuned stereo speakers are pretty loud and clear for such a cheap device

One important thing to note is that the A53 is supposed to get OS upgrades until Android 16 (4 upgrades and 5 years of security updates) while the Note 11 Pro+ might only get Android 12 (Redmi historically only provides 1 OS upgrade and 2-3 years of security updates).

Thanks for the review, been looking to upgrade and this year phones midrange phones definitely seems to come with way caveats than before. I'm just glad Note 11 still has the classic trio of large screen, IR blaster, headphone jack and microsd card features despite the rather average camera. On a side note, I also need to see if that 120W charger and that custom cable can also work as a 65W USB-PD charger despite it being a Type A port.

@@SomeOldGamers not everyone's a photo freak, ya know? That ain't the note 11's battleground as you could see on the gaming test. The 2 phones are very similar on the other points (charging excluded), so it comes down to what you wanna do with your phone. As someone who doesn't take pictures or videos a lot, the cameras on the note 11 are fine by my standards and are counter-balanced by the perfs anyway, therefore i'll go with that one. But i also know friends for who the camera is the most important and they'd go for the A53 for that. As i like to say: life's never white or black, it's never a one fight case

A 52s still a great deal. Samsung messed up with the A53 by slapping a chip that most likely won't get the support you'd hope for from developers. Your comment has aged poorly. Samsung has already improved performance with updates. I also honestly don't trust a second-tier Chinese company not to give the CCP spies access to my phone. I need my phone to be a secure device and you really wouldn't have that with the Note. As for the A52, you can basically turn Genshin Impact settings up a notch and burn through your battery 50% faster than the A53. So have fun with reduced battery life and knowing you aren't giving a damn about the environment. I am glad that, after using inefficient competitor chips for years, Samsung is getting back to making their own chips.

Cameras are really rubbish on the Redmi for the price. The photos were very blurry. The hm2 sensor has not been good on any phone and uses such a slow shutter speed on every phone it's used on. If you check the file info on photos you'll notice how slow it is resulting in lots of blurry shots with any moving subjects. To be honest both of these not great for the price. I think last year's models are better. You can get snapdragon 888 phones and dimensity 1200 phones for this price now that are better all round phones if you are willing to pick up a model from last year. There has been virtually no progress in smartphones in the last 2 years apart maybe from screens and there are great prices on last year's models so they make more sense. Just pick up a Xiaomi 11t with dimensity 1200 and much better cameras for example or something like that instead of the Redmi and you will have a much better phone for around the same price. Rant over. Nice comparison by the way as always. You are always very fair in your analysis

I used to be an Apple guy until one day I tried editing a word document and couldn't, downloaded the app, wouldn't work, had to connect to iTunes which took two hours to update, then realised I couldn't store anything on my iPhone so I switched to android. Since then I've been buying these high spec Chinese brands and have been thoroughly satisfied with them. Until now. These days I look forward to better software and new android features which the Chinese brands seem to offer extremely late and if you're lucky, you get two updates and 3 years of security patches. So with the powerful hardware still working brilliantly, I find myself feeling the need to replace my phone prematurely just to get the newer android versions. That's why I'm now switching over to Samsung, 4 years of major android updates and 5 years of security patches. I hate that they make you buy a charger separately but I'd rather spend $25 more on a charger and then have something that continually feels fresh with updates for 4 or 5 years than to get a great rush from something like my current realme and then know it's only downhill from there.

My Mi Max 3 is over four years old now,it's my daily driver, and is an amazing phone but it's slowing down a tad and still on Android 9(rooted and running Derpfest rom) and I want another phone that is as large to replace it. @SomeOldGamers
@SomeOldGamers 2 года назад
I think your impression of JBL is affecting your objectivity of analyzing the speakers. Maybe the conditions are throwing me off but, as a university trained vocal performer and composer, I say the Samsung is noticeably better. The Redmi just sounds washed out and overprocessed. The Samsung sounds like the fuller, more expansive sound. The Redmi might have slightly more punch to it but the balance sounds terrible. JBL has sacrificed audio fidelity for volume. It is frankly surprising but it is what it is. Nobody expects a phone to bump the bass but I do expect at this point to have accurate reproduction of mid and high range sounds. The Redmi is for someone who might spontaneously start playing a song they like at a gathering. The Galaxy will be more useful to a musician who occasionally listens to something without headphones as a quick reference. The lack of headphone jack is immaterial in 2022. And that is from someone who will have to buy a new cassette adapter for their 21 year old car. I had a phone with IR for 4 years and never used it once. I seem to be able to not lose my TV remote. Thermostat? If I upgrade from my basic one, it will have bluetooth and wifi. Any "smart" devices in my home have both those features. The Redmi video makes you look like you really need to moisturize. As for the clouds, there is no comparison, the A53 is far superior. The water looks "dull" with the Note 11. Samsung makes it look appropriately partly cloudy when the Redmi makes it look like solid pea soup. There seems to be no dimensionality to the background in the Redmi, just washed out, like a disposable 35mm film camera. The A53 processor has Tensor cores to provide AI image stabilization and correction. And does it so effortlessly. I remember the effort I had to make with an old SLR when I was studying photography in secondary school that it was difficult to do as well as the A53. Half the time, they ended up looking more like the Note. Some of it may be the Tensor cores and some of it may be the sensors. But I have studied enough optics, scientifically, to know a lot of what is going on here is about lenses, apertures and exposures.

Yeah, Xiaomi always has superior hardware for the price but take this from someone who has been using various Xiaomi / Poco phones in the last 4 years - MIUI is sooo inconsistent. I am currently on the POCO F3 with MIUI 13 over Android 12 and this UI killed the phone. Multiple features don't work, the experience is laggy and overall awful. They did the same thing with MIUI 12 - a lot of bugs on release, they managed to iron them out a few months ago finally and now it's the same story all over again with the 13. So while you can't get the same specs with a Samsung device for the same price at least you get somewhat reliable software support and quicker updates which, to me at least is more important at the end of the day.

@@soheiladam7510 Well, if it works fine for you then great. I was on the EU version and the DND mode did not work at all so I was getting sound notifications in the middle of the night. The overall performance became slower as well. The notification issues MIUI had with Messanger were not fixed, too. So I will be steering clear of MIUI phones for the next couple of years and hopefully they manage to sort their software our by then. After a day with the A53 this is what I can say - yes, the performance is slower and will take some getting used to if you are coming from a flagship processor. However, everything works as intended for now and the speakers and camera are better than on the Poco F3 + the phone is more compact and light. I don't mind the plastic finish, I actually prefer not getting a heart attack when I drop it

@kalels Hey, that's the thing, I don't wanna have to do a factory reset every time I get an update or to waste time flashing ROMs. I actually think MIUI looks good and has nice features but they just have too many models right now so software optimization must be a nightmare. They have to stop coming up with so many similar phones, focus on a few basic model groups and price tiers so they can focus on making bug free software. Hopefully they can figure that out soon, so I can go back to another budget phone with great features

Not what you were asking, but I'd go for the Samsung, just not the A53, but the A52s. For the following reasons: 1. You didn't talk about this, but I'm of the opinion that Android support is more important than ever. Samsung offers three Android updates and four years of security updates for the A52s (one more year for the A53, which also comes with Android 12 vs. A11). Xiaomi's reputation for Android updates isn't very good, but the Redmi Note will probably get A12 / Miui 13 whenever they feel like it. A13 is anybody's guess... 2. You already commented that both phones feel unfinished. Samsung is struggling with A12 on its own Exynos processors (...). Xiaomi has released this Redmi Note with A11 / Miui 12 (...) Really? The A52s has a Snapdragon, which is much better supported, and A12 / OneUI 4.1 seems to run smoothly on it... 3. The improvements of the A53 over the A52s are not worth the money, I think. The processor on the A53 is a step back (at least for now). The cameras are the same. A12 / OneUI works better on the A52s. The A53 loses the headphone jack (...). 4. The price. The previous generation Redmi Note (Poco X3 Pro 8/256GB) can be had for €250 in Europe. The A52s (6/128GB) costs around €310. For me, the €60 are worth the better Android support, fluidity and guarantee for future Android and Security updates. Love your work! Keep it up; we crave the quality content! 🙏🙏🙏

Talking about support, A53 will go till Android 16 unlike A52s which will touch Android 14. How could you skip that lol? The camera's too are better on A53 thanks to the better ISP of Exynos 1280 and better image processing. Infact, A53 doesn't even take more than 1-2 secs for processing even in night-mode. The display too on A53 has been upgraded in terms of brightness and colour calibration, check it side by side. Battery-life too has beeen increased by half-hour. The performance part is indeed better with Sd 778 but not significantly. Neither of them can compete with similarly priced phones with Sd 888 in performance or gaming anyways.
