zhevox Well, that's completely an improper way to abbreviate it. Why not use ''ASM''? I doubt it meant assembly, cause that's quite a stupid way to write it.
Τℎℯℯ ℛeâℓ Τᶉue ξɗǧe that's great to hear from a brother. I'm glad you having a wonderful time. Hopefully I will too. But if you pray can you. And I pray for u. Have a bless one bro.
I haven't tried yet though 'me being me' probably will at some point. All I want is a new battery, something to do on my RDOs to keep my hands busy other than beating my meat and an experience hit. Don't want to brick the phone.
No, this phone was not made for being repaired. Also before you could change the battery which is now glued inside. So if it breaks buy a new one ? No, first youre not buying this phone
I don't buy a phone based on its repairability. I buy its coolness and innovativeness. I am sure that I always do look after every phone I buy :) Thanks for the teardown anyway, just want to have a gud look inside the hardware.
Hi iFixit, I've been watching your videos for years and they're amazing. Objectively the highest-production quality and most detail-oriented. A few questions: Q1) If I already own an iFixIt iSclack, heat gun, and infrared heat thermometer, can I use those 3 to remove the BACK glass of the S6 Edge? Q2) Even if you cannot recommend it since it is an un-tested use-case, how would it most make sense for me to position it on the iSclack? Q3) Also what temperature would I heat the glass up until in order to remove it without damaging any internal components?
samsung designed the screen assembly to be replaced as a whole, i had an S4 before which had an issue with the home button, i got it serviced (under warranty) and they replaced the entire screen assembly. :) and the removable battery part, i never had an extra battery for my S4, so i have no issues with it on my new S6 edge+ :). I dont store music anymore in the device, Spotify is good enough for the music while travelling.
Some things i don't see as taking away fro repairability the glass on the back is not hard to pull using a heat gun. The battery is going to be a little tricky but not to bad. The glass only repair is likely a no go on this phone i guessed this much. Great vid and very cool to see the production flexible display up close.
Nova Flare Actually you are incorrect. While the glue used on the glass bonding the OLED display to it is affected by high heat. Compression adhesive pads are not. You will likely cause everything to melt inside the phone before causing the back to come off easier with heat.
Crazy how samsung phone are held together by so much glue & htc by so much tape... kinda makes you appreciate apple products in comparison to android oem's
Two obvious questions to this teardown: 1. Can the glass and AMOLED be replaced as a unit? In other words, can the glass be considered part of the display for repair purposes (just like on laptops)? 2. Is there a trick to remove the mid-frame and back together, giving instant access to the battery and other modular parts? It looked like it was built with lots of plugs and spring connections at precisely that separation point. And a bonus question for any Samsung engineers reading along: 3. Giving the flexible nature of the AMOLED, would it be more durable to use a soft material for the display surface, perhaps the same thin lightweight material used for "screen protectors", that would also bend around the edge more easily, and would clearly cost a lot less than $24 to make.
Very late but 1. yes, they're glued together 2. No, you can't remove the screws without taking off the glass. You could just not screw them back in but then the phone is gonna split in half from one drop.
MrSlicer2424 it's funny because the S6 does lag (see Pocketnow and Android Central reviews). Samsung are masters of creating hardware compononts (not so much design) but they are useless at software. Buy a software company and do things right. Why are HTC, originally and OEM, able to make super fast software which is arguably quicker than stock, yet Samsung struggle with lag/stutter even on a cutting edge device? Are you serious.
JTCGaming they do. It's well known. Check out Android Central and Pocketnow reviews, as well as numerous reviews. The S6 already stutters and lags, it will be even worse 6 months down the line where Samsungs characteristically deteriorate in performance
Oh well a rating of 3 in context. Well beyond my confident grasp. ●Need to fuck with display ✗ ●Need to replace battery ✓ ●Need to seal phone after done ✓ In my use case ammend score to 5 though still seems beyond my Nokia/Motorolla 2G phone / Samsung Wave / some LG "compatible with" Zune phone experience from back in the day. Hell I was lucky I had a spare Samsung s3 when I attempted 1st go to replace the USB port that had a broken contact. I busted part of the inner edge housing before realising the cheap replacement part had poor dimensional tolerances and forced it in there.
it got a 3 vs a 1? I guess if you were lucky enough to get past the red X hard ones to finally get inside to do the easy ones then maybe. There is NO video on youtube with a successful normal 6 glass replacement atm. its a 1.
'replacing the glass without breaking the display' Are you kidding? If I would break the glass I am not going to attempt to fix it. Did you even see how it was glued to the glass? That part is not ment to be fixed...
Milan Movies None of the phones were ever meant to have glass only repairs. I have done every single galaxy phone this way other than the 5. Ill try a 6 edge glass only and probably fail in the attempt. But if it works it saves the customer money. If it fails no harm no foul. Even having done 500+ glass only repairs on samsung devices i refuse to say yes i can do it and yes ill promise it will be fixed. In stead i tell the strait up that this is a chance to save the some money but is not a 100% sure thing. 500+ attempted repairs and i can count the failures on one hand.
