Thanks Man! I just repaired a power supply using your technics! I watched your video and went over pulled the power supply, and found the shorted FETs using your techinc of jumping the resistor from PS on to ground. Power supply started up but voltages were flucuating, and after removing the shorted FETs voltages were stable. You are a Master Tech.

Great troubleshooting video. I have read and read about isolation, and I could never understand what they were talking about, but this video really made me understand why I need my two isolation transformers. Also the FET testing was great, Wish there were video's like your around 25 years ago. I like you additude about teaching, and keeping stuff out of the land fills. Fantastic video

Thanks for the info. I tested my supply after replacing quite a few Electrolytic Capacitors all bulging up. All working now except "Va".

Great video! i worked on switch mode power supplies for decades when i worked for a power supply company and your technique is very good. i just wanted to mention that when replacing electrolytic caps it's good to use 105C caps instead of 85C caps; they are higher quality and don't cost a lot more. They build these sets with the cheapest possible parts and you can improve the reliability by using upgraded parts as i know you do with the semicunductors.

Great video, thanks for sharing. I have the same model TV with intermittent screen going blank when it gets hot. I'll try your recommendations. I'm guessing the capacitors are shot but I'll check the FETs and transistors while I'm at it.

Thanks for a very thorough and informative tutorial. I just had someone ask me if I can fix this. I was right by thinking it should be fairly simple for someone who knows their way around a soldering iron. :)

Good video! It was a very good thought to advise using iso transformers...I have the Sencore combo iso & Variac, and a few old RCA Iso-Taps. I service professional audio amplifiers and vintage studio gear at my shop, but 90% of my work is on vacuum tube equipment, including a lot of vintage tube radios which have series heater strings that return to chassis ground at one point. An iso transformer is mandatory for working on equipment of this nature...After cooking one scope in my career, I learned to eliminate the ground reference to prevent not only a shock hazard, but protect my pricey Tektronix scope...Great videos!--Frank Ferraro--Audio Craft Electronics

This is my favorite video. I have watched it about 12 times. I love the way you turn the power supply on by using the PS on and the VS on. My question about this technic is this, I don't see these pins labeled on every power supply. Is there another way to find those pins?

Far be it from me to question norcal. His knowledge is amazing. But I'm concerned about using an isolation transformer on both the DUT and the scope. From my experience, only the TV should be isolated. Tektronix says isolating the scope can be dangerous and can cause high stress on the power supply and can cause inaccurate measurement. This is not a criticism. I have learned so much from these videos. It's just a concern

The container the Mosfet comes in will prevent a static charge from building around the containers but do nothing to decay this charge, and an electrical charge can pass through it. An static-dissipative material such as an metal bag will cause the charge to pass around the surface (not through it) and will decay the charge. Technically the Mosfet should be shipped in metal static-dissipative bags, not that pink plastic anti-static stuff. The container you are using to dissipate the probes are anti-static, not static-dissipative. You can't discharge your probes this way. Thank you for understanding:)

Always the first thing to do is a close visual inspection of solder joints, components and look for broken tracks. ( A magnifier ( lens ) salvaged from a rear projection TV is useful for doing just that.

How did you determine that the FETs were damaged and the Samwha Filtering caps were bad when they were still in circuit? You used the ESR meter on the caps while they were still on the board? Also, do you need to bleed the voltage off those high voltage caps before attaching an ESR meter?

Basically if all the vokt adjusters are messed up after I set the power supply vs and VA back with vokt meter proper for my HP is there a way to know how to set the adjusters I turned lie an idiot on ysus there is two and another on the daughter board one on ysus as well as the one on zsus, So four all together I don't know how to fix only know how to adjust the power supply ones back? Is there a system? By looking starting point after I correct the power supply ones with meter? Or are these test points available? HP4260N, thanks in advance!!

hi may i pls ask for any help , I have SAMSUNG PS42C96HDX/XEU , will not start, the PSU is DYP-42W2PLUS, STB 5V ok , blue led comes on flashes a couple of seconds , i hear relay ON ( normal click ) and then imediately it seems to go OFF ( softer click ) .In August ( max hot ambient 40 DEg C ! ) , the set used to require 20 min off the mains and then it would start , but then it stopped doing this, , i need schematic if possible and how to force ON for bench testing. this video is very clear on this, cam one assume ithe procedure PSON to GRD & STB5V to VSON will work for this PSU ?? your e-mail ?

Thank you so much. I thought you needed to force on PS out of TV when troubleshooting. Once I did that, I was able to get all my voltages up and running but what's weird is this board was know bad from a 55" I just fixed and I'm wondering if there could still have issue with startup circuit. I pulled PS_On low and tied Vs_On to 5 volts. I noticed a line called Vs_Con which doesn't have any voltage. Could this be original problem with this supply and if so, I'm lost at this point. Having trouble finding schematic. The board number is BN44-00447A (PB6FA-DY) Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again, John

11 years later. Reply: ESR Capacitor Tester; "In-Circuit Capacitor Tester - Poptronics July 2001". Adequate tester - works well, just don't test caps in circuits with programmed memory chips, else it may clear those but on a PSU like this, no problem.

Hello there, I am wondering if you can help me. this one have got me, wondering what is wrong. I have a Samsung plasma PS51D550C1MXXY. At the start I had a problem with the X-sus board I replaced it, then there was no power ( no Vs power or Va) I have replaced the logic, main and power supply but has not fixed the problem. The standby light is red and flashes at a rate of two flashes. I have fixed a few Tv's but this one has stumped me.

I am working on a LG moel # 42LB5DF-UL no blacklight, has all voltages except 3.4 volts for power on is 1.9 volts. I tried to make the pwer supply turn on by jumping power on to ground using a 1K 1/4 watt resistor. However, doesn't seem to be working. In your video you suggest jumping power on to ground, and V ON to ground. On this power supply I can't find a V ON There is 24 volts getting to both invertor boards. There doesn't seem to be any output voltage from the invertors. Help!

I would say that about 60-80% are labeled, if not on the PS then on the main board. otherwise you have to trace is out by hand.

PLEASE HELP ME! my samsung power supply is BN44-00192A, when i connect the board to 220V power, all output is 0V, PS on is 0V too, voltage on the capacitor (150uF, 450V) is about 300V. this main use 16 pin IC - MC33167 and 8 pin IC - A6159 but there's no 15V or 5V DC to feed them! i have replaced 0.22 ohm resister, MOSFET 11N60, all other res, caps and opto are in good condition! Someone told me that i should replaced the main Capacitor(150uF, 450)! Is that right? Sorry for my bad English!

Obviously this is not for the novice or radio shack amateur. For a do-it-yourself-er would it be more cost effective to have the board repaired or just bite the bullet and buy a new board ? Second ; could it be a blown fuse on the board that causes it to cycle off and on, as we've had a rash of power surges in the area before this TV (HPT5054X/XAA) went kaput, lol ? Thanks for your video's and input. ~James

Help/Ideas? Model: Sony KDE-42XS955 Type: Plasma Size: 42 inch Manufactured: 2005 Retail: $4,995 I bought my Sony KDE-42XS955 from B&H Audio Video in Manhattan for $4,450 in July of 2005. It was the absolute finest TV on the market at that time. It never gave me any problems during its 11-year-long life. It finally died in March of 2016. It was still producing a perfect picture up until it simply refused to power on. When it would power on, only audio was working. The video went from perfect to nothing. There was never and fading of its quality over time. This leads me to suspect there's some internal power supply issue, or something that has nothing to do with the TV's ability to produce an image. Because again, the image was always perfect up until it died. I wonder if this TV can be fixed? It was the greatest TV I'd ever owned, and I've had many since this one. Today's average market range TVs still aren't as good as this set. This is why buying the finest TV you can pays off. You future-proof yourself for at least a while. Again, except for the highest-end sets, my 2005 Sony plasma was better quality than 95% of the TVs made in 2018. Any ideas? Thank you for your time. -Mick O'Brien

I'm no professional, but simply being safe around electronics and taking precautions has prevented me from getting any electrical shocks after 40 TVs repaired. Unless you're stupid, it's pretty hard to get shocked, and you really should have a GFCI/RCD which will save you from the majority of potential shocks.
