Samsung TV Vertical Lines

I have an older Samsung plasma TV that developed some colored vertical lines during the past year.
Most of the time a simple cleaning will fix the problem so that is what I am attempting during this video.
It may work, it may not. It could be a number of other things, I am simply trying something that doesn't cost anything and that anyone can do at home.
Hopefully what you see here can help you if you have a similar problem.
Thanks for watching.
Watch my update video here: • Update: TV Vertical Lines
This model is Samsung PN50C550GIF-XZC
The T-Con board is LJ41-C3382A
** UPDATE **
Here is how I eventually fixed mine. If you remove the back panel, you will see all around the outside edge of the panel something called a COF (Chips on film) it is a flexible circuit board that is glued to the panel which is how it makes its electrical connections. The glue has probably let go in one area. To find it turn the tv on and press the film all around the panel until the lines go away. This is the spot where the glue let go. You won't be able to re-glue it but if you put something non-conductive against it so it will always press that spot while the cover is on then it should complete the circuit and the lines will go away. I can't guarantee it will work but it doesn't cost anything to try.

Thanks Paul. Even though it did not work on your Samsung in this video, your advice helped me on a 2 year old Hisense 55 inch TV that I picked up on facebook marketplace for free. I learnt from you how to disconnect the cables and I cleaned them with an alcohol swab. I put it back together and it works perfectly. The problem was the picture was displaying perfectly but would fade out after 5 minutes. Cleaning it and reattaching the cables fixed it. I am over the moon.

Paul, thanks for taking the time to do this video. My Samsung 46" (UN46B6000VFZ) TV has the vertical lines. Cleaning all the cabling didn't get rid of the lines. Maybe it's my T-Con board and it's time to replace it or the entire TV. On a side note, I'm not sure I understand all the negative comments left below. I find it great that you took the time to put a video together for this problem. And as far as your use of your Google device, I was kind of impressed so keep it up... Thanks again Paul.

@@PaulPomerleau I tried the COF thing with no change at all. This screen shows horizontal lines stacked vertically, see link; photos.app.goo.gl/MS9pZS9QKNQeAtCF8 Whenever anything is displayed the vertically stacked horizontal lines appear. If the TV is on with the source turned off (nothing being displayed) there will be NO lines at all. I did place an order for a new T-Con board and am waiting for delivery. If this doesn't work, then that's that... Again Paul, thanks for the assistance and advice. Jerry

The TCON sends out timing for the panel over a limited number of lines for horizontal and vertical line data for the panel. There is a TAB panel PCB that takes this data from the TCon over two or four flexible cables and distributes it to a further 6 or maybe 8 serial to parallel chips mounted on the flexible plastic tabs between the Tab pcb and the panel itself. This is how a couple of lines becomes hundreds on the face of the screen. Several voltages are also delivered to the panel. The two important ones are a positive one driving the panel cell high with charge and the other is a negative voltage to suck the charge back out quickly. Any panel missing either voltage or both at proper values makes the image seem to ghost or some floating random shading effects. Any break or short in the serial data results in partial images, no image, vertical lines or sectional images. My 2c worth now. The problem looks to be occuring on either the connection from the tab pcb to the plastic tab, the actual chip that is on the plastic tab, the connection from the plastic tab to the panel or finally the thin film transistors made on the panel itself. Seems to me to look like a Tab to panel failure in the middle section. If you have seen this progressively get worse from a single line to multiples then the bond between the plastic tab and the panel has degraded. If they suddenly all appeared slightly then got more opaque, then look at the tab pcb resistors and capacitors in the middle section, one may have gone low or high in resistance. The fact that the fault is progressive as it goes down the screen seems to me to show the chip on the tab is not able to drive the charge in the vertical lines hard enough and there is leakage occuring across a couple of outputs. More than likely, the tab needs either rebonding or replacement. Both considered out of economic repair as rebonding takes a fairly expensive machine (lucky if one of those is near your location) and replacement means you'd have to buy the tab with it's chip from somewhere (knowing the right one to get as well as the same rebonding problem once you have it).
@saddle1940
@saddle1940 5 лет назад
Some people just press the tab harder onto either the PCB or the glass to see if pushing down on the bond improves the image. Commonly done in Sony's with packing under the metal frame, but not so much that it broke the glass. The bond is done with a special tape that when heated and squeezed, formed shorts vertically top to bottom in the tape, but not wide enough to short sideways between tracks. Pressing sometimes re-establishes the bond (momentarily).

I have had the same problem on my Samsung TV and fixed it. First remove the backing plate. Make a stand to hold the TV perpendicular to your table. Put a big mirror before the screen so that you can see the screen while you stands behind the TV. Turn on the TV. It is relatively safe if you keep your fingers away from the high voltage module. Touch every connector on the TFT controller and ALSO the connector on the panel. Finally you will see which connector is the most wanted one. I think the upper-middle connector for the panel is the one you are looking for. Good luck!

Some panels are easy some are tedious... Easy ones have a ribbon connector on both the tcon AND the panel itself. If cleaning the ribbons doesn't help, the tcon might be bad. Only ever is the panel bad if it has had trauma. The hard TV's to fix are ones that have glued on ribbons on the panel. Those require a heat gun and firmly pressing the ribbons. It won't always work, and if it doesn't, consider soldering the ribbons instead of the original glue that's on them. Simply apply solder to the ribbons only, then align them to the panel, and heat gun it till the solder melts. Don't forget the flux!!!

My lines where caused by spraying glass cleaner, directly on the screen, instead of applying to the cloth. The cleaner must be able to penetrate the seal. First time it happened, it was still under warranty and repaired with a new screen.Remembered to apply cleaner to cloth and no problems, until forgetting the last time I cleaned the screen, and now have the lines again, and out of warranty.

Tv's with a loud built in speakers has the potential to cause this kind of problem because of the vibrations, and LCD panels rely on a lot of contact points which is mostly secured by glue. I just avoid using built in speakers and isolate the speakers from the TV.

Bad panel you need to check the VGH and VGL signals and learn how to either tape up the signal to block the short in the panel or bypass the VGL from the drive board to the COF chips VGL with a insulated wire. Basically you got a short in the panel that needs connecting up. I got the same problem and bought a new T CON and the lines are still present. There's loads of tutorials on how to patch the panel up regarding those signals but it will mean removing the panel and doing some soldering.

I have a similar problem but I would have hoped by now Samsung would have posted a solution since many people are having similar problem. I have a TV repair shop and a background in electronics. An earlier post was spot on that the problem is either a high scan voltage or a low discharge voltage especially if the lines cover a range of tabs. There are adjustments that are possible for these voltages by changing the values for Ref resistors on the TCon board. You need a schematic for your particular model and don’t rule out the change in values for components of circuits shared across the problem coverage.

You might want to try unplugging the cables that go from the T-CON to the LCD driver boards. You can then turn on the TV and see if the lines are still there. That will give you a good idea if the T-CON is bad or the panel. You can also run the TV with only one of the cables plugged in. Finally, you can gentle push on the FPC cables that go from the driver boards (the long boards that the T-CON connects to) to the panel itself while the TV is on and see if the lines disappear. The cables deal with the section of the TV that is around the cable. For example, with your TV in this video, it would be the middle cables. If that fixes it, sometimes, you can wedge something like foam between those cables and the bezel.

Hello Paul, great content. Since it seems that you know your fair share on the subject Im going to ask you. I have a Samsung TV that displays lines a short time after being turned on. If I turn it off and wait some time, when I turn it on it takes like 40 minutes or so for the lines to appear, and once the lines are there they get worse over time. This lead me to believe that this is a temperature related issue with the TCon board. Should I replace it or do you think that it is something else. I know that it isn’t the panel since the line positions and patterns aren’t always the same and sometimes they appear and sometimes they don’t. Thank you for your time and quality content.
@PaulPomerleau
@PaulPomerleau 5 лет назад
I agree that it seems to be a temperature problem but I don't think it is with the T-Con board. I would guess that it is with the adhesive around the perimeter of the screen. Your panel is a matrix with horizontal and vertical lines like a window screen. The circuit strips are glued to this around the edges at the back. When the lines are visible try pressing on the strips until they go away. That would be the place where the glue is letting go. This would be the first thing I would try. Good luck.
@TomasLomba
@TomasLomba 5 лет назад
Paul Pomerleau thanks, Ill try that before buying a new tcon. There is a detail I skipped in my description which is that if I switch inputs from HDMI to cable/air, the lines are not visible in cable. It is when the lines have gotten worse for continuous use that they appear on every source and not just on HDMI.

Tear a piece of playing card (may be fold it to make it thick) and put it between the plastic border and the screen panel where the line has appeared.

I've got a cheap Chinese 1080p LED TV worked for around 5month and I can tell you it was in perfect condition when the lines started to appear so In conclusion it's the cheap materials who made the problem occurre

One of the circuit touched the ground of the display. You have to unscrew the board touched the ground and put a spacer in between the board.

Need to pull down to the panel Layers where the ribbon feeds in. Wedge glued connectors to a tight fit. Takes a long time.
@tksalalah
@tksalalah 4 года назад
You should check VGL voltage and ckv signal that might be short in side the panel just cut the signal ckv1 and ckvb1 and same 2 and three and then both cutted signal from panel side connect to the ground and check if ok or if not then try to connect with vgl that around -10 dc volt. Hope this solution work

I really wanted to fix it but found a great deal on a smart tv that I couldn't pass up. See my video of it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OH0Hyp68ycc.html Thanks for watching. Hope it works for you. Also check the glued electrical connections around the perimeter of your panel, it is a common problem for this symptom.

Paul, did you replace the Tcon board or panel?
@PaulPomerleau
@PaulPomerleau Год назад
Hope this helps.

My Samsung 60" flat screen has a vertical 4" wide pixilation band. The strange thing is....it goes away for awhile and then it comes back. Its definitely the tv and not the Comcast cable source. I was with Samsung Tech Support for 45 minutes...only to be told to call a technician.

I have similar issues as you do, only thing that fixes it temporarily is me hitting the middle backside of the tv and it will restore it to normal for a little but the lines end up coming back. I’m going to try and clean the connections like in the video if this doesn’t work, I’d love to find a video that goes over testing the T-con board.

I have a Samsung QLED monitor for my Xbox Series X. I get vertical lines all over the screen on start up. After about 4 - 5 minutes, they disappear?? I've tried different HDMI cables to no effect. Any thoughts please?
@PaulPomerleau
@PaulPomerleau Год назад
You will have to take the back off the TV. Then around the outside edge of the screen there is a flexable circuit strip that is glued onto the contacts of the screen. This has probably let go in the area of there the lines are. With th TV on, press around the outside edge near the lines and see if they go away. Once you find the area you may have to wedge something in there to keep it constantly pressed and then put the back on. It will be difficult to reglue the circuit strip so wedging it is probably the easier way to do it. Hope this helps.

I remove tcon pcb ribbon then turn on i have no picture but still have vertical lines so this means tcon pcb not fault. There is another pcb at top which i feel may be the power for leds.

First remove the backlight voltage and try to put light on the panel, if you see the lines again then maybe is the panel if you don't see the live then it's the t-con board. Then try to put out the t-con board and soldering the pins around the chipset (most the voltage chipset not the cpu, big own), plug in and open TV and see if you have the same lines, after this try to reflow all the board and put it back again and see what happend. Because is color lines for my expirience i think is the t-con board 99%. When the panel is damage the lines are Black not color.
