Review copy provided by publisher. This video review is all about Samurai Warriors 5, the latest entry in the 1 vs. 1000 series of Musou or Warriors games, but instead of being a sequel it's a complete reimagining or reboot. This means there are less playable characters and a compact story, but in return you get a new and stunning visual artstyle, a new weapons system and overall addicting and fast-paced gameplay like you're used to with these game.
Samurai Warriors is all about the Sengoku Era (Japanese warring states) and started as a spin-off to Dynasty Warriors, which focused on the Chinese warring states. Iconic characters like Oda Nobunaga, Mitsuhide Akechi, Noh and Hattori Hanzo are playable. But seeing as the game only follows the story from a young Oda Nobunaga, the story ends at the Honnoji Incident where Oda Nobunaga has grown older and is even called the Demon King. This is also the reason why this game doesn't have fan-favorite characters like Date Masamune and Sanada Yukimura as playable characters.
But hey - with this change in direction we may very well receive a sequel that has those characters. Or even DLC, who knows? For now - I hope this video review will give you all the information you need and if not, just leave a comment and I'll back to you as soon as possible!
The gameplay shown was recorded on a Playtation 5 (PS5) and I've played the games for 31 hours before writing this review.

After a 7-year wait, a new instalment in the tactical action series "SAMURAI WARRIORS" is finally here!
With this title, the historical period depicted in the first title of the "SAMURAI WARRIORS" series released in 2004 has been revamped.
With visuals that have largely evolved since the first "SAMURAI WARRIORS", additional WARRIORS officers, and evolved actions, an even deeper drama set in the warring states is depicted.
Also, with a focus on the lives of officers Nobunaga Oda and Mitsuhide Akechi, in order to more intensely and boldly depict the warring states era spanning from the end of the Ōnin War to the Incident at Honnōji, the title is the beginning of a new series, in which the stories and characters from the traditional "SAMURAI WARRIORS" have been revamped.
Features of "SAMURAI WARRIORS 5"
■With officers whose designs have been revamped, as well as new officers, a total of 27 WARRIORS officers join the battle
Officers such as a young Nobunaga Oda, known as the "Great Fool", and daimyō Yoshimoto Imagawa, who was called the "Greatest Archer in all of Kaidō", appear with new designs that match the setting of this title.
Also, new officers such as Toshimitsu Saitō, a retainer of Mitsuhide Akechi, as well as Kōga ninja Mituski join the battle. A total of 27 WARRIORS officers interweave their fates to create a dramatic warring states era.

In this title, players can once again enjoy the "thrill of sending enemies flying" that the WARRIORS series is renowned for.

I never understand why they did not take Nobunaga's point of view from the start. He is basically the reason for all the conflicts of all the events in the era. His story is also very miracle also. Tons of feats and tales to go through. Glad Koei know about this and start to make a game around Nobunaga

I never really liked the dude because he's mostly portrayed as a stone-cold killer, was really fun to see a more human-side of him. Also liked the dynamic between him and Mitsuhide a lot, even though it might not be historically accurate :p

Bit harder to sell evil demonic warlord, as opposed to, say, brave gallant ikemen warrior like Yukimura. Same reason Zhao Yun is on the cover art for most Dynasty Warriors titles despite not having much of a role to play.

If Capcom ever released the Sengoku Basara games on Steam, I'd be playing that all the time versus this. That said, it seemed almost like Koei Tecmo took a cue from SB and rebooted Samurai Warriors in that way. I do enjoy this game with the changes, but as some others said, by having people able to use multiple weapons, it takes away the identity of the characters a bit. I swear, I miss the older games like Dynasty Warriors 3-5, Warriors Orochi, and the old school Samurai Warriors games because of this. Sure, some characters I didn't play all that much because of this, but nothing beats going back to DW3/4 and wrecking shop with Xu Huang and Dian Wei with their axe weapons and insane power. I'll never stop remembering those moments.

Not sure which SW it was but loved the one with Masamune always joining a battle. Last mission I think is Keji fighting a huge battle and then castle mode, best one I've played.

@@icantbelieveitsnotbutter8851 -- I "think" that was the first one because I remember the first stage where Masamune was the third-party in the battle between Shingen Takeda and Kenshin Uesugi and you had to choose who you would go after first.

Now we need Hideyoshi, Ieyasu, Yukimura, and Keiji stories from the future installments. I would be really interested to see a story that takes you through Keiji Maeda's perspective throughout his life even if it's just a spinoff game like Spirit of Sanada

Many ppl will disagree with me but I believe SW5 takes a massive step backwards with clone weapons. Outside of being rinse and repeat the biggest complaint of DW and SW was characters not having the own identity due to clones and after SW4 1/2 spirit of sanada and DW8 we had the best warriors games, each and every character had there own identity and tho gameplay was rinse repeat it was a treat trying out each character n then having there own identity. Now with both this and DW 9 they took that away which to me is a massive step backwards

Thanks for sharing and no worries - there are plenty of people that agree with that. As mentioned in the video I like the new system as it makes it easier to transition between characters (as in not having to learn all each style) and reduces the power gap between characters. In the previous games I never played all characters and only stuck to 10-15. But I can definitely get that if you're even more into these games, want to explore more characters and like the distinct styles - that this feels like a limitation. Would you still enjoy playing the game though, or does this step backwards ruin it too much for you?

@@sonogamirinne7172 I can understand that criticism I mean they had a damn bench as weapon which is ridiculous lol ..but I will say this atleast each character had a identity personally I wouldn't mind ppl having a same weapon so It fits with the game but atleast give said characters a different feel/moveset you know so they have a identity not just like a 2 move difference

I love musou games, i love lvling chars, gearing them min maxing and beat the hardest difficulty. We need more games like these! I grinded warriors orochi to death back then, i loved it.

My biggest complaint with modern day warrior games is that there could be a huge battle between peons going on, and no one would die due to how little damage they do.

Yeah it's pretty much only the named characters that do some damage. A battle between two groups of peons looks more like a friendly mosh pit if anything haha

@@Swrinny Most of the time it's actually the player character. It takes forever for my Ai generals to take bases. Quickly it just turns into me VS the entire enemy army. That's my biggest gripe, asides from that, I think warrior games could be pretty fun.

i disagree with you. They gonna reboot the series for every several years. Its already widely known that higher number mean newer game(just like iPhone) . If we drop the numbering, it will much more difficult to track the game in the future.

@@vinson2233 Higher numbers deter new comers, as many people are thinking they need 1-4, rather than just 5. And Samurai Warriors 5 isn't even Samurai Warriors 5, it's Samurai Warriors 0...more convoluted than the alternative. Like the. Literally no one would assume "Samurai Warriors 5" is a reboot without being told or playing it. It'd be like if they started Rush Hour over from the beginning with new actors playing Lee and Carter by called it Rush Hour 4.

The assumption i hold is for warriors games, it already well known that higher number means newer version. Even if in the future, people can quickly google it whether they should play the previous game and the answer will be clear that no previous entry is required to enjoy the game. The 2nd assumption i hold is Koei Tecmo, just like in the past, will keep rebooting the game for every year. There are no way for them to reset the name every couple of years. Maybe the better solution is to put release year as the title? Just like Fifa and Pro evolution soccer. But doing that will make each entry less charming 🤔

After playing this i honestly love it , I just hope they do later installments involving Hideyoshi’s unification & the Western and Eastern War One game focuses on Hideyoshi Other on leayasu That way you get to see characters from here mature & new characters like Yukimura or Keiji come in . ALSO HYPOTHETICAL STORYLINES WOULD BE AMAZING LIKE IN DW8 (: !!!

I have mixed emotions about this ever since I played SW2, it's a good in a way, you can see a human side to him, the weapons still a problem but I do understand that it is close to being real. But I would wish they would just seperate this one from a SW title as I grew fond of the characters from the previous series.

Just finished Nobunaga's storyline to unlock the fantasy levels! I wonder how much chaos Oda would cause if he SURVIVED Honnoji! I'm very happy that Samurai Warriors finally introduced Yasuke!

Not a hater, as a warriors fan though, I don’t understand why everyone who defends Koei on these recent releases acts like we can’t both have no clones AND have every character be worth playing (i mean, I used to play every character anyways in 3-5 and SW1 and 2.) I mean, this game even cut characters. There’s no point in adding people if you’re just gonna sacrifice uniqueness because of it. And I wouldn’t mind cutting if every single character was super unique and worth playing. Welp, anyways, nice video, but I just can’t accept anymore games with clones from them (no, Ex attacks and Musou animations do not count, especially with how homogenized even musous have become), especially since the strategic war elements, morale system, and competent troops have been missing from the series since essentially the ps2 era as well. SW5 is basically Sengoku Basara without all unique characters and more history focus.

That mask came out of nowhere, but he definitely looks great with it! I'm not sure if you're familiar with anime, but he's voiced by the same dude who did two big characters in My Hero Academia and Jujutsu Kaisen. Was hard to not think of them when hearing his distinct voice :D

Gameplay was fire I love it, and understand it’s just focused on the early stages…I was looking forward to using yukimura 😂 and others and they gave me all these other ppl like dosan saito 😅. I’m definitely looking forward and hoping for DLC or What’s next for tyhe franchise.

Fair enough, hope you do enjoy the game once you do pick it up! For what it's worth - if you experience more with weapons, even on the characters that don't prefer them, you'll completely switch the moveset/playstyle around. Maybe it'll be more enjoyable that way :D

I hate clones that being said the “clones” still feel like different characters to play with the unique combos and ultimate skills. I honestly wouldn’t let that deter you.

Tbh I love all the differences especially the art style. I’ve been a fan of musou games since the first. Played just about all the spin-offs. They all have major differences and to kinda make the experience of whatever you’re playing enjoyable. Not all of them did great like DW9 but I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed strikeforce which was definitely different lol. As great as our game developers and studios are becoming with great artist and ideas along with the advance in technology it wouldn’t make much sense to not try something different. I love musou games but I definitely don’t wanna play the same game for 20 years lmao

OMG, I can't believe you just mentioned Strikeforce haha. That was actually my first 'Dynasty Warriors' & Musou game, felt like I was playing Dragon Ball Z in an ancient China setting :D Loved the big bosses too and Lu Bu has never been scarier as in that Musou mode. But glad to hear you're liking it, especially after having played all others!

If they remaster or make a sequel I’d buy it without hesitation lol I played every other game before that so when I got my hands on strikeforce with all those jumps and dashing around and air battles I damn near lost my mind lmao and as always Lu Bu was a problem for me lol I played every musou game except for the fate series which I plan on buying eventually lol

On Strikeforce my personal fav was Zhou Tai aka Ichigo Kurosaki. I used to play other players in PvP quoting Ichigo, "This will be over in a flash!" and then killing them in 2 seconds. I had to memorize his aerial combo as I would dash, air launch them, and air combo them faster than the camera could follow. The Uryu style bow users were boss slayers. I always thought they should make an open world bleach game using that engine or and engine based on it. It is still such an underrated title.

@@grimrevan4660 GETSUGA TENSHOU!! I've seen some combo videos of people playing Strikeforce, there were some insane things you could pull off there. And you're right Bleach does deserve a good game and Musou could work well for it. I've heard Soul Resurrection wasn't bad, but it looks like a weak version of CyberConnect2's Naruto games :c

Thanks for this review. Yeah I'm not sure about dropping 60 dollars on this quite yet. I'd probably look for a physical copy for cheaper down the road. I didn't pull the trigger on dynasty warriors 9 at all due to the horrendous reviews on it which made me sad. But SW5 looks like a good buy.

I love most musou games but specifically SW4 and DW8CE. I don’t mind that this story is missing the second half of the sengoku era since the combat feels that much better. My main gripe is not being able to change the speed of our horses >:(

Samurai Warriors 5 basically told Oda Nobunaga’s story from his crazy, reckless teenage years, his brutal rise to power and his demise at Honnoji and since the game focuses on Oda Nobunaga’s life, all the other characters, especially Yukimura Sanada, the Samurai Warriors poster boy, have to be removed in order to tell the tale of the infamous Oda Nobunaga. After four previous games of being portrayed as a bumbling moron, Imagawa Yoshimoto gets a significant character change as he becomes the first major obstacle that Nobunaga must eradicate in order to fulfill his destiny of uniting Japan under his sword.

making the goofier characters actually threatening was a great idea in my opinion. Good ol yoshimoto has had some pretty decent upgrades lately between SW5 and Nioh 2. Just wonder if this will be a trend going forward cause while joke characters are fun they get pretty tiring after a while in my opinion.

@@Swrinny DW9 was a absolute disgrace and set the series backwards had interesting concepts but did not capitalize on them clone weapons terrible season pass dlc garbage literally the worst in the entire series

@@Swrinny They tried to do 'open world' but it just doesn't work. Even after patching all the original issues like slowdown and texture popin etc it still plays odd. They really don't have the knowhow to do an open world I'm afraid. You should probably give it a try though, so that you can understand comments from players when they reference it.

Finally time to get this. This is less "Samurai Warriors 5" and more Spirit of the Sanada but instead of Sanada, Oda. One of my favorite characters to play with since SW2 was Nobunaga because of his unique buff that changed his awesome attacks, as well as his somewhat western gear. I've hesitated on getting this game due to all the character changes but it can be no worse than the change from Dynasty Warriors 5 to 6 then to 7 again. It's currently on sale on the playstation store for the next hour. I wish they would have dropped an Xtreme legends or empire version by now for the ps5.

I never got into the SW spinoff series. I never felt I was getting a developing story and the fighting mechanics were convoluted. However DW9 was painful and I have a DW itch.

This is the greatest warrirors rpg ever made everything about it is so addictive, my last 1v100 game was wu4 that was okay fun beat em up but this is the real deal everything about the leveling system makes it feel more like a diablo game mixed with a beat em up. Infact you can really go crazy and mix and match combos while making your own style. I also like that you can make the game extremely hard if you decide to weaken urself. Im in awe of what they accomplished here. No wonder this sold like crazy. What a great game.

A 'Futures Unknown' chapter after clearing the main story would would be cool. Have stages that have a decent importance to each character that was cut and have them unlocked for free mode play after clearing their respective stage. That way you could still have yukimura,masamune date etc in the game without messing with the story too much. Though the clone issue remains i wonder if people wouldn't be so annoyed about the roster that way. Or heck have a mode where you randomly have strange mission objectives nlike consecutive fights in arenas and the like. The game is really fun to me but the lack of variety kinda drag to me personally.

Good gameplay video. I had a great experience playing this game when I only just played its trial version but it's an enjoyable to play. Wish I'd get the full game to experience the entire storyline.

I love dynasty warriors and I recently got bitten by musou bug and replayed DW8XL and had a blast so I ended up buying SW4, 4II, 4 Empire and 5 ( all pretty cheap on eBay) honestly was lost how packed the content was on SW4 but SW5 felt right at home from the get go so I’ll just play 5 before 4

If you end up wanting more of this genre, there are also some cool spin-offs from other popular games and anime (One Piece, Fire emblem, Zelda, Berserk, etc) in case you wanna try out more!

I kinda wish there will be a hybrid between Fire emblem and Warriors series. You get to socialize and custom/command/play characters you deployed. Its should be difficult and complex like fire emblem yet flashy and visually appealing like warriors series.

As hack/slash vet the 1 that upsets me is how the devs would trade off signature wpns towards specific characters for the most boring generic wpn in the game. Nō without her claws is kinda an insult, but then again this is a younger Nō

I really want to buy this game, but the only reason I played the 4th one so much is because of character creation and chronicles. There are a lot of upgrades to this games, but in terms of content to keep me invested? It seems pretty lack luster in my opinion.

And another thing I didn’t think would bother that much, but did, were the graphics. It doesn’t have anything to do with the art style, and has everything to do with the low res textures that are very obvious throughout the game.

Yeah in that sense it can be underwhelming for ya. The main selling point in terms of content is the story imo - I really like the way it's told. It's less historically accurate for a more dramatic effect, but it allows you to connect with the characters more. When it comes to just the gameplay - you have the 69 stages and then just Citadel Mode to grind out some characters and upgrade facilities.

I really love the ability to have 2 characters on the battlefield, and being in different locations at the same time. And you can switch between them anytime. I have been waiting for them to implement this since SW2.

This is the only game with a decent HUD. I just bought Warriors Orochi 3 ultimate edition and the HUD and camera are terrible. I only bought the game because of Ayane.

I'd say start with this one in that case - I think it's the most accessible and beginner-friendly one. And more importantly, if this style will be used in the future for this series I think it's best to get used to this than how the older titles work

I would love these games if it weren't for the musou style combat. I hate how floaty and unsatisfying it is. and cutting down the same copy and paste enemies isn't fun either.

there are 2 things I like about SW5, visual and characters and that is it, they have cut 80% of characters from the game and it is not longer fun to me. I like having all those characters I grew up with and I was hoping if SW5 ever comes out they will just bring more bit not they have ruin the game for me also that think you said about warriors orochi, I HOPE you are wrong, I hope they never ruin WO as they did SW5, I want my WO5 to be more of crazy like WO4 with new characters, I don't want them to cut anything but I would like if they use SW5 characters as replacement for some of characters from older SW games and I WANT MY FUMA AND SASAKI IN WO5

Yeah that's exactly why I'm curious to see what they're gonna do with DW and WO. Seeing as SW has seen a big overhaul, it might be difficult for them to integrate the new style of designs together with the style of designs in DW. Because up until now, all 3 series were built on the DW foundations. Seeing as DW9 empires is still similar in how it has always looked, I think you're right that if WO5 does happen anytime soon it'll be like WO4 with possibly some updates character models from SW5. But if they choose to do this with the other 2 series too, I expect DW10 to be a reboot and then coming together with SW5 for a WO reboot. That said, looking at the bold changes made in DW 9 (which people didn't like) and the bold changes made in SW (which people have mixed feelings about) they might just be experimenting to see what works for the future of the series. Only time will tell, but I hope that whatever they decide to do it'll be something that as many people can enjoy (both old fans and new players). I absolutely adore Nu Wa though... don't know how I'll feel if they ever change her T_T

@@Swrinny yea I also think if they make WO5 in future they will not use SW5 as starting point then again we might see some new version of SW5 with some characters returning and maybe support characters to be playable tho those are not that much interesting as NPC let alone to be playable and I was thinking hard and I don't mind clone weapons that much but come on KOEI cut characters and 85% of them, that is just too much and with DW9-E coming soon there is small chance that IF we get WO5 there will not be cut characters but I don't hold my hope for it, as of now WO4-U is best game for me, yea story is just boring but gameplay, visual and most important ALL of those characters it is just perfect game for me and as PC player to be able to play it on my PC is dream come true, they have make WO3 for every platform but PC and I hope they never do it again, I never played that game and it makes me sad. We can speculate and hope and dream of stuff to come but only time will tell, SW5 is BIG disappointment to me

I've been playing these games since SW2 and DW5 and so far I'm loving this one a lot. The focus on the story reminds me a bit of the Spirit Of Sanada game which is my favorite SW game BY FAR and I think it's really nice to feel kinda connected to the characters instead of just mindlessly playing ones you know nothing about

Would you recommend this game to someone whose only experience with warriors is the nintendo crossovers? (Fire emblem and both hyrule warriors) Ill probably get it anyway but im curious how they compare

If you're into the history of romance of the three kingdoms or the sengoku Era I'd say get it. If you enjoyed hyrule warriors and fire emblem you'll enjoys these too. There's also the empire series which allows you to craft your own character and create the story your way in a sense

Haven't played the Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem games sadly. But I think it depends on what you really like about those games. If you like those games mostly because you're into the Zelda & Fire Emblem series it's something you can't really compare to Samurai Warriors. But if you're really into the 1 vs. 1000 gameplay, with big attacks and fun battles - you'll be good. And if you have any interest in the history of the Sengoku era on top of that - I'm sure you'll enjoy it a lot!

Glad you liked it! Not a big fan of the new 'full price' of games being 70 euro in general. Funny thing about Steam though is that there seems to be some regional pricing going on, my friend in Norway can get it for about 40-42 euro, whereas the game is around 70 for him on the Playstation store still :/

This would be perfect for you to jump in, unless you want to play the older ones too. In that case I'd say play the older ones first and then look into this one later down the line. Story-wise you're perfectly fine with starting with 5

@@gregharper6382 Haha, Date & Yukimura in Sengoku Basara are crazy renditions of them which is awesome in their own way. Especially love Date with his random English, horse that has engines and all those swords at once! Kind of hope that game gets a reboot/remaster at some point too :D

What's the difference between Samurai warriors , Dystany warriors, and Warriors Orochi and if they are 3 different games what's the differences between samurai warriors 4 and 5?

Samurai warriors = Japanese history, Dynasty warriors = Chinese history, Warriors Orochi = a crossover of the two with a made up storyline that involves supernatural creatures from both the Chinese and Japanese myths/legends/folklore Difference between 4 and 5 storywise is that 4 was a continuations of the previous games and 5 starting from the beginning

@@deusvlad2.083 Anytime haha. So, to make things a bit more confusing is that you have 4, 4-II and Spirit of Sanada, which is a spin-off of 4. I've only played 4 myself back in the day so I'm not fully sure on what 4-II offers. I've heard good things about Spirit of Sanada as it gives you a similar treatment in terms of 5 - getting to know that characters and his struggles a lot more. The thing with 4 is that you go through a set of missions for multiple groups. So you have the story from the perspective of the Oda Clan, the Takeda clan, Uesigi Kenshin, and a bunch more. You get a broader perspective of the battles as you experience them from multiple sides, but you don't go as in-depth with the characters as you do with 5. If you wanna play multiple games I'd say you should start with the older ones and then move to the 5th as I personally think it feels the best and is up-to-date. If you're just looking to get into the series and start following it in the future, I think 5 is a good starting point and you can keep up with future releases. Really depends on your preferences though!

@@Swrinny omg more spin offs lol I can't too many too expensive and the DLC too would be tempting with those weapons and costumes and characters lol thanks for all the info though really Warriors orochi 3 and 4 is only 20$ its so much cheaper than samurai warriors and dystany warriors and you can play as Ryu hayabusa and Kasumi from dead or alive I think I'l go with that, just hope the DLC won't kill me cause I need to get a Switch OLED I never bought the console and with the new one coming I think its time I did lol

This game going cell shading is like when Budokai 2 when cell shading. I hate cell shading, if the games original cell shaded by all means, but if it wasn't it automatically makes the game look downgraded to me.
