Anticamente San Berillo era densamente abitato e pieno di botteghe di artigiani che a seguito dello spostamento verso nord del centro della città perse importanza fino a diventare un quartiere degradato. Dopo il terremoto del Val di Noto del 1693, che rappresentò una cesura nella storia urbanistica di Catania, si avvia la ricostruzione della città orientando l'asse principale viario dell'abitato verso l'Etna e ponendo nei cosiddetti Quattro Canti il fulcro della ristrutturazione.
San Berillo District è una parte dell’opera di riqualificazione e rigenerazione urbana messa in atto da alcune associazioni e dai suoi abitanti.
