San Diego is running out of 'quick fixes' at deadly intersections

Nine years ago, San Diego adopted a goal of achieving zero traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2025. That deadline is now less than six months away. But city streets are just as deadly as they were in 2015. KPBS metro reporter Andrew Bowen says those who have lost loved ones to traffic violence see a city government that's asleep at the wheel.

UK here. We had a deadly crossing that took a lot of lives over the years and the local authorities finally had enough when a young mother and child got struck buy a speeding car. The kid didn't make it and in response a simple underpass was built. In the 16 years since not a single pedestrian has died at that location.

Sadly Hillcrest (like the rest of San Diego) is not a “walking city”. If you are a pedestrian you are sadly at your own risk in this county. Having lived in many places I was initially shocked how dangerous walking and cycling is in this region is but it really really is deadly. Not safe. Assume everyone behind the wheel will gun you down and you are in the right frame of mind to “walk” anywhere in San Diego.

The city could turn some of the giant intersections into roundabouts. Even a one-lane roundabout can handle more vehicle throughput than a two-lane signalized intersection with a left turn lane, while at the same time making drivers slow down. And they don't need to pour concrete, just make a circle in the middle out of Jersey barriers and restripe the approach.

Carlsbad was smart. They allow all pedestrians to cross from all crossing points (and diagonally) at one time. Then cars cycle the vehicle traffic. This is the most sensible approach. Stop all cars and let all people go to whatever point they need to. It doesn’t add any time to the cycle but it adds a “people only” feature.

Drivers are so reckless. They think they’re the only people in existence. I’ve seen drivers honk at pedestrians even when that pedestrian had the right of way and the cross sign. Just too many entitled people in San Diego.

Get used to it. Gloria and his complicit city council are about to cram 125, 000 more people into your neighborhood with negligible infrastructure improvements, not even parking. His plans is to be in Sacramento, while you and the rest of the community will be stuck there with the problems he created and suffering the consequences. All the problems will be magnified 10-fold.

If you’re looking for quick fixes, you don’t really care about the problem.

Can't fix problem drivers.

@@user-jc7jb3bu5s We could fix these intersections, like the one in the story.

in order to fix a problem, you must first UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM. let me explain common sense to you: problem is people's stupidity and lack of awareness. if you'd have 10000 people with IQ levels like mine, there wouldn't be a single accident if all of those people would drive in same area for 10 years. i pay attention to what i'm doing and that's why i never have accients. i have sense of speed, but most people do not. few times i've seen accident coming from a mile away, yet those idgets manage to crash without noticing. human stupidity is the problem, not the intersection or roads or cars.
