I’m positive the food is great here but you guys really helped me experience what you felt when you were trying each dish. Amazing job exposing this hidden gem!
I love everything about this hidden gem. It’s very romantic ambiance. I love ❤️ when people tap into their entrepreneurial spirit. Way to go guys! Everything looks so delicious and aesthetically pleasing. 😋 😋😋
Amazing. Very inspirational. One sure FACT about Black people is no matter the odds, where there's strength and determination, we're going to find ways to succeed at every cost and bet against us! Congratulations to this power couple and their Black owned establishment. Much growth and prosperity. Very deserving!😌
Wow,I'm so impressed with her fusion on soul food! I happened to be from Nashville and in Orange County with a sick family member. I really truly want to make the drive to try this beautiful taste experience. I grow up on hot water corn bread and all the havens had to offer in this tiny shake with 4 tables and I hot line of the best food I ever had and miss it so. Swetts is the best know soul food in Nashville but there nothing like this! Nashville has been desegrevated my intire life so I have never known anything but shared cultures through kinder garden on so soul food being a very close version on a meat a three. The level of higher income bracket in my black community has sky rocketed. The number of resterants in Nashville has exploded but you have something that is so special and be such a really great center piece for the redevelopment being built between TSU,Fisk, and McHarry medical school is amazing and still enough available to buy instead of leasing. This area is between a mile from one compus to another. Nashville has always hsd a highly educated black community but the growth of Nashville has brought some many younger, and growing economics wealth to Nashville if you ever considered making a huge market and jumping head first, I beat there is back for you just ready to over you a business plan well maybe close too it.
Man everything looks so good. I would order everything you ate including the drinks. Plus you get that real southern hospitality which goes a long way. Im putting this on top of my list.
Lived in SanD for 30 years and never ate anywhere this fabulous! Diverse food experiences just wasn't a thing back then. Mexican doesn't count cause it was on every corner😊
Ok, I'm from Mississippi, but live in San Diego. I know southern food. I have to try this! I literally made collard greens last night, with bacon. 😊 I also randomly bought 2lbs of crab legs. The collards and bacon cost almost as much as the crab, but I enjoyed those greens more than anything ❤
As someone who got to experience their food, I must say that their reactions are 100% genuine! The food is a 15/10, atmosphere is 10/10, customer service is 10/10 - it’s amazing! I can’t wait until they reopen (they are closed now because they’re expanding)
This may just be my favorite Gareth Eats episode so far! I grew up eating soul food, so it's always great to see people enjoying it, as well as seeing the inventive spins people like D'ona put on the cuisine. Everything she made looks and sounds incredible. Haha, I knew you were in for a good time the moment you tried that first biscuit! Awesome episode as always, man!
This just appeared in my timeline today, 12/2/23. All her dishes looked SO delicious!! I knew it was good when Daphne unbuttoned her pants....and still kept eating!😅Grew up eating alot of this food. Just so amazed that she's doing this out of the comfort of her home with her husband as the waiter! Loving the fact she converted her back space area into a mini eating place. I wish her so much more success because you can tell she really loves what she's doing!🥰
who cares if its black owned. More people should support small business period and stop labeling the color of the owner. She seems to be a great and loving person and business owner period.
I agree but unfortunately a large part of America wouldn't give her the time of day. 1 because of where she lives and 2 because she's black. Even Gareth and his friend were talking about the neighborhood was "sketchy" as they were walking up. That term "sketchy" is white people coded language for black. Just so you know.
The presentation of the food is outstanding. Beautiful job to the hosts for their beautiful, innovative restaurant. I pray that their business is overwhelmingly successful. In Jesus Name.😊
If there was a super super like button on this, consider it hit!!! I can almost taste every bite you guys make! OMG, you kidding me!? Thank you for this awesome video!
I LOVE how this lady makes REAL homemade banana pudding. I swear NOBODY, and I mean NOBODY, makes Real, from scratch banana pudding WITH bananas (don’t get me started), from scratch custard, and fresh meringue. I swear I’m the only one left. I’ll HAVE to visit Granny’s restaurant one day!
Me, too! I still make my banana pudding from scratch like my mama did! With double-boiler custard from egg yolks, whipped meringue from the egg whites on layers of custard pudding, bananas and vanilla wafer cookies! Oh my, I need to fly to San Diego real soon and make reservations at this hidden treasure spot!😍😋✈NC➡CA
✔ there are only a few of us left & that would include ME too. I grew up in Louisiana on my mama's & grandma's cooking & baking! There's nothing in the 🌎 like a home made/from scratch made meal, dessert & beverage😘😘😘💜💜💜 Making a reservation soon. I hope there's room for 3 (myself & my 2 sister's).
Wow!! Everything looks amazing !! You can tell everything was made with her heart and soul. Definitely need to try it out. Thanks for this video Gareth!!
Wow!!! This was the best experience through your lens of great looking and tasting food! Even the setup, in making the most of what's there! It might as well been a 250 seat restaurant with its presentation and service alone!! They need to expand...ASAP..CONGRATS!
Dude, I'm Asian-Cajun and that third date recommendation is spot the F on!!! That smoked turkey-collard greens egg roll... WTF!?!?! I grew up on Banana Pudding and that desert... "YOU'RE KILLIN' ME, SMALLS!!!!"
We are temporarily closed to focus on expanding. We will be reopening in spring of 2024! Our current setup is outdoor only with 3 reservations a night. Our new setup will have indoor and outdoor seating to combat the rainy season 🌧. Additionally we will be going from 3 tables a night to 12. These changes will help us meet the overwhelming support people like you have shown to us in our short time of operation.

Thank you Gareth, What a little hidden gem. I love that kind of cooking, have had Southern fried chicken and catfish. It was nice to see your colleague and friend. Happy Thanksgiving, I hope you enjoy the food and company. What's your favorite pie? Mine Pumpkin.
That was a real creative way to use your backyard as a way to create a mini dining area as a restaurant obviously if she had her own full kitchen she can really go all in, respect

Surf and Soul is the only legit spot I’ve found in San Diego for authentic southern black culture. It’s very unfortunate that San Diego doesn’t have more authentic soul food. Sadly someone’s small personal fryer can’t support a million plus person city…
We're working on it. We've been looking at storefronts all month in order to meet the demand. Our goal is to be back open in April. Thank you for understanding.
Soul food = comfort food = sleepy food Imma reserve a table for our anniversary...Have you thought about catering or cooking in someone else's home? That would be fire.
