As someone who is passionate about Formula One, and who was absolutely devastated after witnessing the events of this tragic weekend, I have uploaded this qualifying video series as a tribute to the memories Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger.
CAUTION: Some accident scenes are graphic, so if you are sensitive to such material please do not watch.
They clearly show how dangerous this circuit once was, and also how the marshals and paramedics used to treat drivers immediately after an accident back then. At the start of the year the FIA had banned certain driver aids and the sport literally became more dangerous as a result.
Ayrton himself had predicted major accidents and can be seen here investigating how Rubens Barrichello is after his accident, and how he commandeers the safety car, completely against protocol, to drive down to the Villeneuve corner to investigate where and how Roland had gone off the circuit.
It is a testimony to how advanced Formula One, and motorsport in general, has now evolved in terms of safety and post-accident driver care.
For the true Ayrton Senna fans, it's a last chance to see him flying around a track at top speed on his way to his 65th and last ever Pole Position. We can only guess how he would have developed the Williams FW-16 that year, and ponder on what could have been...

30 years ago… Today is May 1st 2024. I so vividly recall watching the race live with my late father and younger brother. Ayrton and Roland you are still so fondly remembered 🏎️❤️😇

Fully agree but without all these fatalities modern motor racing F1 In particular they would not be wat they are today cars tracks Marshalls even walls all past accidents got us here and for those thinking i dont feel for drivers and families i do but without their brave sacrifices in those crazy days of racing we be seeing this today RIP Roland Senna from this bad weekend

He wasn't saying that it saved his life, he was doing his job and trying to be positive. They knew just as everyone else did when that car came to a stop that Roland was dead, but because they can't say anything until the official word has been given, and all parties have been notified, they have to try to remain positive and try to tell the viewers about things like the chassis, the upgrades, etc. Has absolutely zero to do with them thinking he was alive and "saved" because they knew he was dead. Everyone knew he didn't survive that.

@@xandrews13x39 Yes. He had a basal fracture so he basically bleed out. He was dead before he left in the helicopter.

It was awful, but im pretty sure there have been worse weekends, in 50s - 70s, when often more than one driver would die in a race

He hit a 30 ton concrete block at 190 mph and cracked it. Wow. Crazy how they would have an exposed concrete block wall at the end of a straight away like that.

​@@JM_daDocThose aren't good arguments though. First of all cars reached easily 300kph before the kink and they often battled side by side when they approached the corner. An impact like this had to happen sooner or later. Concrete walls on the outside of 300kph corners is just inexcusable, both for the Tamburello as well as the Villeneuve/Tosa corners. Even simple guard rails or tyre barriers could have possibly prevented both deaths that weekend and the cars still wouldn't have exceeded the track limits

As I'm typing this message, it's been now 30 years since the world witnessed the tragic Imola week-end that forever changed Formula 1. From Barrichello's crash on Friday (almost died), to Ratzenberger's death on Saturday and finally Senna's death on Sunday; these losses will eternally be remembered. May they Rest In Peace. 🕊❤

Yes, I found it quite strange the first time I watched it unedited a few years ago. All 3 of them had just watched graphic resuscitation attempts to Roland on the track. So either John Watson and Allard Kalff knew the severity of his injuries and wanted to keep upbeat incase a miracle happened, or they were under the belief that F1 cars were now so incredibly safe he'd be ok. Perhaps maybe a mix of both, considering Rubens' escape the previous day plus it'd been 8 years since a fatality in F1...

It’s so ironic the commentators are saying about the safety of the cars. I know they had no clue of the impact that this week would have in the future of the sport. May both Senna and Rotzenberg rest in piece. Senna para Sempre!!! 🇧🇷

@@krampusk5699had Jules died earlier in the weekend as opposed to 9 months after a mid-race accident, I’d imagine they’d have probably cancelled it. I remember reading somewhere they deliberately delayed Senna’s death announcement so it wasn’t cancelled mid race because of Italian law

The organiser and bernie would of lost millions, hence why the black box on sennas car dissappear and senna was resuscitated so death wasn't declared on track, neither he or Roland were alive after initial impacts

They tried to resuscitate greg Moore in 1999 who had an even worse crash than roland and senna, his head hit ground and concrete wall at 190mph no slowing down, that was live aswell

Seeing Ayrton in that Alfa driving to the site of Roland's accident is a bit eerie. To think that less than 24 hours later he too would lose his life. That was a horrible, horrible weekend.

The intention of uploading these videos was to honour the legacy that has been left after Roland's and Ayrton's deaths. So many other drivers lives and careers have been spared as a result of the massive improvements in terms of safety. I hope this continues as for Marshalls and spectators alike. The survival cell on these cars was great. The amount of head movement the drivers had was not. Waaay too much head movement. No restraint whatsoever. Its odd to watch old F1 races and even pre HANS device NASCAR races and see how the drivers could move their head all over. The bodies are tied down rigid but the head can still move and snap around..... Basal skull fracture waiting to happen.

+Zoomer30 I did see an interview with Roland's father where he stated that he has the helmet Roland wore that day, and the only sign of the crash present on it is a crack on the right hand side. Roland's head possibly hit the wall in the crash so HANS might not have helped sadly. The raised cockpit sides introduced in 96 (and by Sauber in the latter part of 94) might have helped however.

MadGaz85 it's odd watching old races and seeing the driver check their blind spot. And if course the cockpit sides were level with their shoulders or a bit lower. Way way to low. The push now is for "enclosed cockpits" in F1. It would help in cases of debris strikes (Felipe Massa hit by a spring) and perhaps loose tire issues hitting the driver (Seem to remember a driver got killed like that at Laguna Seca in a F3000, a relative of famous F1 driver Surtees).

I remember the Laguna incident, it was F3000 driver Gonzalo Roudriguez, driving as a substitute driver in the then-active CART series who crashed, he went straight on at the corkscrew, flew over a tyre wall and hit a concrete wall, vaulting it and landing upside down on the other side. The poor guy had no chance but it was one of the big incidents that prompted the use of HANS (If Gonzalo had been wearing it, he would have possibly survived unscathed - the broken neck was his only injury). Henry Surtees (John's son) indeed died after being hit by a wheel which had come off in a seperate accident ahead of him at Brands Hatch, the recent Justin Wilson tragedy was very much the same kind of incident. Personally, I don't like the idea of canopies or silly looking devices in front of the driver - what I would recommend would be increasing the cockpit sides higher (Ferrari and McLaren were the only ones who interpreted it in 1996 in the way it was supposed to - the other teams found a loophole and it's been the norm ever since) and slanting the roll hoop forward - therefor the cockpit is not enclosed but there's a far greater chance of debris deflecting away from the drivers head. The current "preferred" proposal (a cage supported by a single strut in front of the driver) wouldn't work in my view as A: Visibility is reduced and B: Smaller debris can still hit the driver - If Massa had that type of protection when he was hit in Hungary, the result would have been the samet. There's also the chance of larger pieces of debris becoming wedged in the supports and halving, or totally reducing driver visibility. I drove a single seater recently and I'd hate to have had one of those things in front of me! Zoomer30

+MadGaz85 The accident That I am thinking of is one that killed either a nephew or grandchild of John Surtees. A car way in front of him wrecked, a tire came off and bounced a few times and came down just as he was there and it hit him in the head.

Apparently, the lap before the crash, Ratzenberger drove wildly over a curb wich dammaged the front flap and short time later it broke at about 200 mph sending him straight into the wall

After Senna checked out the scene & later found out Ratzenberger had succumbed he was deeply upset & considered not starting the race. However the following morning he decided to start feeling Ratzenberger would have wanted the show to go on, as likely did all the other drivers. I'll go no further as you know the rest.

He also had Ratzenberger's country flag in his car, he was gonna wave it around after the race in remembrance of Ratzenberter. He snuck the flag in his car, they found it during the post wreck inspection.

None of us really believed Senna or Prost could ever die, they were... 'perfect', they were not normal chaps: take a look at Gilles' looks... then take a look at Ayrton: smashing difference. We felt it deeply, that was our illusion way back then... Imola '94 brought us feet back on the ground. The '90s... Kurt Cobain committing suicide, for instance: celebrities were NOT perfect, they COULD die, the '80s were over and so was that dream of robotic future. It was hard for many of us.

Back to then, remembering I had a nice afternoon to my bro's church witness volition, I discovered pc use at 9 old. It was so sunny, we had tons of fun. I was discovering F1 but wasn't focused too much because I was a 9 old kid. (I only saw brazil gp) Senna caught my interest cuz' he was the fastest, in a renault (my dad owned a renault then) and I liked him at first glance. Only by Monday, I realized why my parents were sad for me sunday evening. By monday lunch break, they handed me newspapers. It felt unreal... Back to afternoon school, the teacher had to call them back since I was crying so much in class. To me May 2nd was my darkest day in my life ever. Like losing family Dear to me. I had to wait 20 years and my gramps death to cry as much. I went to Imola in 2004 with some fan club thanks to mom's gift for me being 20. A great track, outdated for modern F1. Hope to see an Imola F1 GP again...

its when you see the person who went to this really devastating crash and you know that the same thing happened to him(and almost to another driver at the very start before this the following day)thats why these events won't ever be forgotten by anyone...........................................................................

Wow, after all this time it's the first time I've seen the wing come off on the straight before. He sadly had no hope of making the corner. I find it hard to imagine that somewhere out there there's no other footage of the two Imola crashes...there's thousands of fans on the hillside overlooking Tamburello and Villeneuve

The commentators sound so unconcerned and oblivious. Some of the things they say are tragically ironic - "these guys are surviving very high speed impacts now which wouldn't have happened 15 years ago".

The way the commentators talk about carbon fibre monocoques exemplifies the mentality at the time. They found it hard to believe that a driver could be killed if his tub held up.

@TheNickmoura @TheNickmoura Yes Roland Ratzenberger on Saturday afternoon in Qualifying and Ayrton Senna in the race on the Sunday. It seems quite unimaginable now considering how safe the sport has now become. Both were freak accidents and the deaths were as a result of thick concrete walls being at the side of the track as opposed to massive run off areas which we have now. They tragically both suffered fatal head injuries as a consequence. Both drivers are sorely missed, Ayrton particularly..

watching this video of roland's accident sends a chill down my spine even now because you know before the car finally came to a standstill that no person can survive a crash of this magnitude when you look at it on the 30th april 2018 EXACTLY 24 years after it happened............ what was the commentator at the start thinking? Incredible saying how good the survival cells are when he can see the state of that car, huge hole in the left side, much of the car missing. And of course Roland Ratzenberger didn't survive. Was the commentator Allard Kalff?

The ironic thing is that John Watson, Allard Kaliff and Dave Price have all just been watching Roland being given cardiac massage!? Perhaps Dave had just seen so many other crashes and Barrichello's in particular and seen these miraculous escapes that he was under the illusion that F1 cars were so safe now. If you listen and watch videos of other drivers in the aftermath as well as Max and Bernie, there is a huge perception that it was just a freak coincidence. But oh how F1 has changed and did

The sort of injuries that Ratzenberger died from wouldn't have been prevented by something like a halo or aeroscreen though, one of which being an aorta transection which is caused by extreme deceleration.

Classic Eurosport - a driver has just died, and they're talking about the merits of carbon fibre on the body of an F1 car. I don't think there ever has been, or ever will be, a darker weekend of motorsport than Imola 1994. Even when the cars were just circulating, just watching the video's, there is just a constant feeling that something isn't right, something's going on, something bad is about to happen. My Dad told me this feeling was noticeable even before Barrichello's crash... RIP guys.

4 wheeled motorsport I agree, it was the darkest weekend. I think the 1970 Isle of Man TT is the darkest in all of any type of motorsport (6 seperate fatal accidents).

That's not technically true. Elio De Angelis was killed whilst in Testing for Brabham at Paul Ricard in 1985. The last death in an F1 event was as you say Paletti at the start of the Canadian GP after he ploughed straight into a stationary Didier Pironi. Gilles Villeneuve had died only the previous month whilst qualifying in his Ferrari for the Belgian GP of that year. Thanks for your comment anyway :-)

Indeed it was. But can we please not forget the Ferrari mechanic that was killed in the pit lane accident towards the end of the race (the pit lane speed limit came in for the next race as a result) and the spectators that were injured during the start line shunt. This further darkened the weekend.

You're welcome - I regret using the trial version of the video converter now but it does show how the crash occurred at 1:35 as his front wing flies off. He had damaged it by going off on the previous lap. Where other drivers would have come in to the pits to replace it, brave Roland put his foot down and went for another flying lap in his attempt to qualify his car and get within 107% of what was Senna's final pole. Absolutely that's my very point for uploading these videos. There have been some very lucky drivers in recent years. It never will be totally safe as that's impossible but it is certainly safer and it has evolved. How safe KERS will be though is yet to be known. Let's hope for a great and exciting but another safe season :-)

So sad! It’s crazy how safe F1 is now, they go straight into a wall at 300km and just get out like nothing happened. Mark Weber hit anther car flipped and went straight into a wall, tossed his steering wheel over the front all pissed off.

it is very unfortunate that sometimes we learn from fatal mistakes like this and yes at the time cars we getting ridiculously powerful and some driving aids were banned.

This one looks a lot like Kubicas crash back in 2007, The angle (almost head on) and speed (+- 280kph) is pretty similar and even the whole structure of the car was smashed in a similar way destroying it completely except for the survival cell (even rolled on his wheels and exposed his feets in Kubica's case). IN both crashes the energy was dissipated largely by the car sliding over the track. The Hans device probably saved the life of unlucky RObert back then.

***** This is quite possible but the truth is we will sadly never know... Concrete walls - just like tractor in the horrid Jules Bianchi accident hopefully will become things of the past. We'll never make it 100% safe, but making it safer should continue to be a priority. Thanks for you comments

This is true but I have been predicting a death due to a rescue tractor being out on the course in the wet for many years. Jules' head hit it at over 100mph. That must never happen again...

Daniel Alexander Hill I agree with you Daniel, i have been fearing for drivers and tractors for years now, specially after watching a lot of American's Cart Series back in the 90s when they already had those trucks with some arguably bizarre huge bumpers which made them a lot safer (at least looked safer anyway). Cant understaand why they never made it to the f1

Yeah... I also kind of imagine the guys in the studio talking about car safety in an attempt to calm down the viewers and to try and make people hope Ratzenberger survived when you see his head flail from side to side as the wreckage of his car slides down the track... A terrible weekend, Formula 1 lost 2 great drivers, almost 3... RIP Ratzenberger and Senna.

radically change within only a few years. Just as a final statement. I uploaded a very tasteful video edit which starts where Part One ended. I faded it to black immediately after the crash and added the words... "What followed were quite graphic scenes of resuscitation attempts on Roland. But his injuries were too severe. It was broadcast live to millions on that Saturday afternoon on the Eurosport channel. Please respect his family and memory with your messages... RIP Roland Ratzenberger

Ratzenberger damaged his front wing on the pervious lap but stayed out, the Wing broke off and he died. Not the teams fault. Sennas accident was negligent

ScarfaceHood - The problem was the track, not so much the cars. THe cars were very strong, even in 1994. Theres not much you can do when the cars have nothing but solid walls to hit a max speed.

it was all about the cars... they've pushed the speed and performance to the limit, but there was not enough room for saving a life when something went wrong. As well as the next day when Senna died. (Circuit circumstances and cars over their limit).

Daniel Gandolfi As a live commentator, you cannot speculate things to the public, to the people watching the live coverage, it is not like "Mmm yeah, he looks dead to me, his head was motionless after the incident, i think he might be dead by now", as a commentator you have to keep a positive atmosphere in the transmission of a sports event.

@blackcluck plus i read somewhere that Roland was orginally on a six-race deal with Simtek, and if he had qualified and raced well in the race, the deal would be been made longer, so sad, Roland died for his dream

That was such a terrible accident, I hope this will never happen again in Formula 1 but sadly I think it will after Senna's death this year it marks 20 year without a Formula 1 death. R.I.P to Roland Ratzenberger and every other racing driver who have lost there lives racing.

and all the injured mechanics (Alboreto accident) and spectators (Lamy&Lehto accident)...plus there was a Porsche Super Cup race and one driver got seriously injured..

@blackcluck Were they really restricted to 12 laps in 1994? I didn't think that rule had come in until later that decade.. I accept he was under pressure to have made that mistake and perhaps a death wish was too strong a statement. Thank you for your comments and that knowledge I will look into it. Best wishes :-)

@DAH210774 F1 cars go over curbs hard - the real reason for the accident was due to a mechanic not bolting the front wing on properly, the whole thing came loose. He did a runner in panic after the accident. Don't ask me how I know this

It's David Brabham. Ratzenberger crashed about 60 seconds later, so he could not have been there.

I agree, it has to be Brabham as Damon's flying lap isn't even completed before Roland's crash so that would make it impossible. David Brabham must have had a white or a light coloured helmet also (although they do look similar from a distance).
