And away we go! Bit of a quick visual correction on my part: the 8x8 dish at 2:52 is much older than Life On Mars and wasn't made for the theme specifically. I think I included it in the shot because it lent itself well to the "sci fi stylings" comment, but this is an instance where the script and the visuals somewhat clash. Just wanted to clear that up! As always, the Summer Of Slug doesn't happen without financial support from viewers like you! Discontinued colors that there are just a handful of parts for: Sand purple, Light Violet, Light Purple, Medium Violet, Violet, Blue-Violet, Dark Blue-Violet,…it’s almost like there’s a pattern here. 🤔 [ok, there are also several non-purple colors that have a similarly sparse number of parts: metallic green, medium lime, light lime, medium green, very light gray, very light bluish gray, sky blue, aqua, light orange, sand red. But the purples have been hit particularly hard on this front, especially when you consider that Purple has also been long-discontinued, though it at least had a modest selection of parts in a fair number of sets.]
My friend just threw away his Zam Wessel. Helped him clean out his garage and found some pieces on the ground, he let me keep them. They were for that set. He told me he threw away LEGO the day prior. There’s currently a historic and rare figure at the county landfill. RIP
I got my Zam Wessell minifigure 11 years ago, I still have it, I won't sell it or throw it away, it's one of my most valuable lego minifigures I own in my lego collection
You know LEGO banked hard on marketing Life on Mars, when they sent some of the Martian minifigures to literal space and back aboard the International Space Station. And the bus tour helps too.
You know, solid props to you! It's rare that I find a Lego channel that acknowledges that wear and tear on second-hand parts means that a particular piece was well-enjoyed by it's target audience, and did it's job as a toy!
Slugger is the type of guy to yap about a specific color in a toy line for 8 minutes, make it entertaining, and casually make amazing stop-motion detailed Lego animation to go along with it. The fact a slug can make all those sets without hands truly is dedication.
Don't forget that we very nearly got a full wave of classic space sets in sand purple! There still exists a photo of the prototypes from around 1989 I believe.
Love seeing deep dives into colors like these videos and would love to see more!! Super impressed with the editing and life brought to each video, keep it up! Big fan!
Hey I know of at least one other instance of sand purple! Duplo figure Spud from Bob the Builder has a sand purple torso, and if you buy it, you’ll notice the head is a strange color as well… the head is one of only 3 know instances of an EXTREMELY rare color Lego calls Light Orange (different to the color bricklink calls light orange). This color is not recognized by bricklink as all 3 times it showed up was as a part of a pre assembled character.
You know, now that LEGO is more established. I feel like they could bring a lot of these colors back no sweat. Sand red, sand purple, violet and spring green would fit very well into themes like Friends. Do it LEGO! You know you want to!
Wow, I think I was one set away from also owning every single sand purple piece, which would have been an accidental collection instead of an intentional one. Great video, these dives into niche Lego part/color/theme details are always a fun time!
I used to love Life on Mars so much as a kid, I always wanted to recreate the map from Lego racers 2, but I barely had any bricks to do that lol. For me, these aliens are the best ones Lego has made.
Such a beautiful color. There's a reason my logo consists of a sand color. Sand Lego colors are my absolute favorites! Also LOL at the Life is a sin translation making it in!
Such an incredible video. The stop motions inserted into these videos elevates them immensely. New part I missed… two face from the Batman 1 line uses a sand purple face print!
Thanks MayDay! I definitely went back and watched yours again for inspiration. ❤ Interesting detail on the Two Face figure... but does that *really* count as Sand Purple? 😉
The Life on Mars series was my favorite as a child. The unique details, amazing colors and the setting with non-aggressive aliens was very cute and inspiring. 🥰 Thanks for the video, Slugger!
Every time I come to this channel, I am instantly endeared to the super-authentic, unapologetically quirky, home-grown feel of the channel's branding, style, and community. "The Summer of Slug" is a wonderfully unique idea that perfectly fits into the vibe of this channel. And using stop motion to showcase LEGO elements is such a no-brainer I'm amazed I haven't seen it done before.
Thank you so much! I don't really watch a lot of other LEGO video creators on this platform, so that might lend some reasoning as to why my videos might feel a bit different. It's like they're their own evolutionary offshoot, haha! 😅
Life on Mars is such a neat theme. The builds remind me a lot of classic Exploriens stuff, but the colors keep it very cool and modern. More sand colors!!
I really believe that the only reason I remember who Zam Wessel is today, a short lived character in a movie I never think about, is because of the color of the minifigure. It stood out so much to me as a kid and even though I never had this set, it never left my mind. Crazy how a rare color can have that much impact.
I remember visiting Legoland Billund as a kid and viewing a Life on Mars live action show. I didn't understand a single word as I didn't speak Danish, still don't, but it was a great experience.
Didn't expect to be this early, but it is definitely to cool to finally see the color of sand purple examined in greater detail. But in spite of it only appearing in four sets, it actually isn't the rarest color that Lego elements have been produced in. One of the contenders for that title may be a shade known as "bright bluish-violet"-which was only used for 35 pieces comprising a Technic Star Wars figure of Jango Fett (8011). Which was released in April of 2002 in the runup to the release of "Attack of the Clones" on May 16 of that year. But in relation to the Life on Mars theme, it was the first theme to include parts in sand red and sand blue, but sand green was actually first introduced in mid-November of 2000 in a "Sculptures" set depicting the Statue of Liberty (3450). Even though that set was only available directly through Lego themselves. Of note, this model may be somewhat inaccurate in that regard given how the real-world statue is more of a "seafoam green" color, despite having a copper color when it was first gifted in 1886. But that's a different story. There is also a metallic version of sand blue, if you are familiar?
@@RRSlugger Right. It first appeared in the Technic Super Battle Droid (8012) and a minifigure version of it included in the first Republic Gunship (7163) from 2002, with every piece in it being set-exclusive. This color would've been exclusive to the Star Wars theme, if not for it being used for a minifigure-scale sword in 2004 as part of the "Knights' Kingdom II" theme. It was also used for some constraction-scale parts in 2005 (only in 8794) before the color was phased out entirely.
OH MY GOD, I LOST IT when I saw the thumbnail, I adore this color, it's strange rarity and it's history 💜💜💜 I weirdly really enjoy the fact that it literally has ONE not-overspecified, general-purpose part, being the 1x3 slope, it's just so wacky 🤪 I actually have a small, little dream associated with sand purple. I absolutely love all Lego sand colors, they're my absolute favourite ones. I think that every sand color was released as previously mentioned 1x3 slope brick, so I plan to collect them in all 4 sand colors and then create some sort of bracelet, keyring, you know, some sort of accessory with it. You see it and it's like "if you know, you know". #LoveSandPurple
I have specific memories with part 30586, it was used in the roller doors for my first fire station set as a child, and i always found it to be such an interesting shape. It's cool to know it debud in such a cool colour
Life on Mars was my favorite system theme other than Rock Raiders, the only mainline set i didnt have was the tube base. So glad to see it represented more!
I found my Zam Wesell when I retrieved my old LEGO earlier this year! Probably the highest ticket minifig in the lot, but with some gnarly marks on the head. No regrets lol, well loved indeed.
The thumbnail reminds me of those LEGO monochrome minifigure habitats. Honestly, it's a pity that we may never have enough pieces to build one in Sand Purple.
I got mizar at a minifigure kiosk at a mall as kid because I liked teal, and I always referred to the sand purple as “lavender”. I didnt realize how rare it was until now. I think I also had that racer so maybe that made sand purple seem more common to me. Great video as always!
part 30586 is definitely one of my favorite pieces, I enjoy the use of system pieces that can creat mechanics, like the garage door type things or the ones that allow sliding plates, I own a few in light bluish grey, if not more, I haven't done much in the way of going through and cataloguing my sets and what's special about them
Only recently found your channel, but I enjoy it so much. Nothing better than retro Lego. And I loke your „slow“ style, makes the content good to relax
Thank you, I'm glad your enjoying it! Crazy to think that I'm considered "slow" for RU-vid standards - I feel like I'm talking a mile a minute sometimes! 💀
Life on mars is one of my favourite themes from my childhood. I got into lego just as it was being discontinued and so it wasn't until later that I got a nearly complete collection via ebay.
That comment about the Rock Raiders helmet (though I know it as the _Power Miners_ helmet - goes to show which sets I grew up with) really reminded me how little that helmet is used. I'd love to see it in other colors. The last set to use it was a DC set in 2018, where is appeared in red, so they hopefully still have the mold...
The areo tube hanger was my fave set as a kid. I saved up to buy it my self and it was one of the few sets I ever rebuilt after it fell apart lol. I had to reaquire it as an adult to feature in my current set up. But luckily I still had most of the Sand Purple elements around in my parts bins. I used them to help make a Jokermobile including that engine part!
Firstly, can confirm, I’ve never owned a single life on mars set. Second, when combined with a stud ended 3l axle, a 24 tooth gear, a single stud, and a silver part 26007, it should be known that part 30535 actually makes for an excellent Steam Turbine Engine. And third, I currently own absolutely zero sand purple elements, shocking, I know. Good job as always Slugger, good job. Rockatoa, Brickticks out!
Wait wait wait… a slug? And not just for one day, I would presume? What’s that? Yes… no,no… ok. So I now hear the slug is here first a whole summer. Splendid indeed!
I always loved Life on Mars, one of my fav themes growing up, and sand purple being such a prominent color in in the theme definitely endeared the color to me. I've always wanted a sand purple bionicle, whether it be a bohrok, a rahkshi, or visorak, I just always wished we got a bionicle in that color.
I really enjoy these kinda videos focusing on ONE niche colour, though it’s a colour I really like, I’d really wanna see it used on some friends sets. I do wonder what made lego keep sand blue/sand green around though 🤔. If I recall sand red is brittle so that made sense…have a good day Slugger!, this was a solid start to S.O.S 🐌
I love my Zam. Such a beautiful color. It's funny you feature cheesy in a sand purple video the day he releases a video featuring the sand red Professor Lockhart.
@@evilscientistrecords As paper backdrops behind the models - then the regular white light bounces off those and bathes the models in a corresponding glow. 🙂
Explains why I never knew this existed, especially as a kid I was focused more on the other “theme” which I miss dearly probably just a withdrawal of nostalgia but still
Sand purple is a very unique color, and unlike the other variants of basic colors, I think it's removal took away a very exotic option away. I understand it was not used much, but I think it was under utilized rather than of little use.
Takes me back to last year when I was actually gifted a sand purple part #30528 by MayDayFigs himself! I still have it up on a little display I made :)
Slugger Zam Szn! Sand Purple is one of my favorite retired Lego colors, and while it’s a shame it had such a limited run, at least it lives on in spirit through Medium Lavender! Unlike Sand Red… Also I have a classic Zam with no legs 😭
