SANDA'S KUNG-FU ROOTS - Mei Huizhi Ep.01 #sanda #mma #combatsport
Mei Huizhi was a leading pioneer in the establishment of Sanda as an official combat discipline and sport in China. Like many of these pioneers, he comes from a traditional Kung-Fu background. He was the head coach of the Beijing Sanda Team.
In this series, I translate and add additional info to this series from China for the international community to enjoy.

Ok I assume part 2 and maybe 3 is coming. I be interested to learn about what kind of full contact format Chinese martial arts have before Sanda which you mention here starting in 80s. Like was Hua Yuanjia even real person. Or what was practiced during Ming, Qing, even Song and going back.

There will be two more parts to come. Sanda, like leitai (just a title given) before are simply formats, although sanda was a more defined and clear format. Prior to that in the republican era, sometimes matches would be held, in some cases they were just an individual having a match at some time, and in the guoshu movement they arranged a competition from time to time, but not regularly at all. In both cases back then they were not really well defined in rules etc and were not a common feature or event. Hence the time this became something more akin to a western combat sport was only after the 80s with sanda. So, to your question, there wasn't an established fighting format or event that was widespread, established and regular prior to this really

@@MuShinMartialCulture then what was Mei Huizhi doing before he invented Sanda? Did he have any competitive experience at all? One would assume a culture as old as China will have some form of combat sport. But perhaps died out.

@@MbisonBalrog Mei background will be covered in the next episodes. You would be surprised to know that formalized competitive sports are mostly a western thing (think Olympics from Greece) and not as common outside of that, so these endeavors in the east mostly became popular only in recent history

@@MuShinMartialCulture how cultures outside Europe train warriors/soldiers? Plus don’t they need some game to teach boys how to be tough? I’m really looking forward to rest of episodes.

Be clear about "culture" as you cannot clump "China" into one culture. So mongols for example and grassland cultures (Manchus etc) had their cultural roots and games (horse riding, wrestling, archery hunting (for Manchus) etc that was part of their base, but the Han didnt share the same for example. @@MbisonBalrog

it seems unfair to have to fight in rules that allow elbows and knees but that do not score throws. a fairer compromise would have been to allow the elbows and knees but to also score throws highly. in real life, throwing your opponent can be devastating.

These were teething problems in the beginning when format rules etc were still a point of contention. The rest of the series will clear up aspects further

Professional vs amateur, and China constantly not grasping it! Now they fight without shin pads, which I think is not smart... especially for tournament with multiple fights. Chinese martial arts of course has elbows and knees, but if athletes are not trained in them they won't be able to fight with them. But still, elbows should be for pros, not amateurs... It is not the base method that is at fault, it is the management.

Yeah well the early period of sanda they basically had blinkers on regarding where the rest of the world was regarding combat sports at the time
