This question doesn't have to do with this video. I wanted to know what software you use when designing furniture. Also, would love to see a video about how you go about planning a project from start to finish using that software. Bought several of your plans and would love to learn how to make some of my own. thanks!

I have the Hercules sander and used it for 6 hours straight sanding fuzzy cedar fence planks w/ 80 grit and back over with 180 grit. I only used 2 discs of each grit the entire time. I didn’t notice any hand fatigue or clogging. I did however use the Hercules discs with the holes lined up and my arm did start to get a little tired after a few hours into sanding. I was very impressed with it myself.

Black and Decker own DeWalt and Craftsman. A lot of parts are the same. They keep the batteries different to keep the tools different.
@VittorioSergi
@VittorioSergi Год назад
Fun fact, whenever you read Craftsman, just say Stanley in your head, yes, stanley, the owner of Dewalt, under that brand they usually release older versions of dewalt tools, I don't know why Stanley releases their gear under the name Craftsman in the US, but here in Europe they do under the name Stanley. But the hierarchy stands for both markets, so black and decker, Craftsman/stanley and deWalt, more or less a parallel with ryobi, rigid/AEG, and Milwaukee, yes yes, I know rigid/AEG are only produced by TTI and not owned by them. Edit: After a bit of research, Stanley/Black+Decker aquired the brand Craftsman some time ago, so I'd guess is just a marketing strategy to releases the same tools in Europe and teh US under different names, since here in Europe the brand Craftsman wasn't really widespread at all
@barge7619
@barge7619 Год назад
"I know rigid/AEG are only produced by TTI and not owned by them." This is partially incorrect. AEG is owned by TTI. AEG is not sold in North America. It appears TTI rebrands certain AEG products under the Ridgid name for sale in North America.

I was concerned when I first bought the Bosch because it seemed so underpowered and I heard nothing but great things as well. However I will say, since, I have learned how to use it to ITS best ability and you basically apply little to no pressure and using the 3M paper, it works fantastically. I will say though I haven’t tried the DeWalt and I really do want to give that one a try since everything else I have is DeWalt and I’ve had a great time with all of it.

I've had two of the Bauer corded sanders for a couple years and just got a 20 volt one a few weeks ago. You can get the corded for $20 periodically and it is a steal. I've had no trouble and used them a lot. As for the power concern? I'm not sure why you would ever want to put enough pressure to bog that down? Fatigue? I've used them for multiple hours without issue. I rarely use the dust box because I hook them up to vac. Highly recommend. Bargain.

Great hands-on reviews. I have a Bosch and a 3M sander. The Bosch is a finesse sander and is not really a "workhorse". It is great when used for fine sanding. I needed to do some architectual sanding and bought the Bauer after seeing tons of glowing RU-vid reviews. I had not purchased a Harbor Freight power tool for decades due to quality issues. That thing shook like a freight train and sanding discs didn't cling to it at all. It flung the discs all over. I tried several brands and grits, but nothing worked. I threw it in the trash after 3 or 4 hours of total frustration. I went to HD, bought a Dewalt and finished the job. Lesson learned, again.

I have that Skil ROS you tested. Love it!! I don't use the dust collection. I generally use a shop-vac or nothing at all so can't vouch for the attachment that came with it. It's in a drawer somewhere, still lookin brand new! I can sand for a long period of time with it and never notice any fatigue. Never noticed any great heat build up or dust build up either. Probably because I'm not using the included dust collection system. Yeah...the velcro is great, IMO, for this sander. Even after about 2+ years it still holds up very well! If (when?) it goes out, I may buy another one simply because it works for me. Or I may venture onto the Milwaukee bandwagon just to try it out. Thanks for the extensive testing Matt!! As always, we appreciate your efforts!!

Completely different experiences with the Bosch and Makita #1... have had the Makita for 5 yrs and it's been my workhorse, zero complaints... got the Boach a year or so ago and instantly loved it, just so smooth and easy... granted it's not the workhorse the Makita is, it's more of a finisher. Also have the Ryobi cordlss version (it's been on the shelf since I bought it) as well as Makita 1/4 sheet and Dewalt 1/4 sheet (note this is 3rd Dewalt, the first 2 just plain quit working within a week)

I have the Bauer, hard to pass up at $20 on sale, and while it seems "underpowered", I don't ever really find that I have to apply any pressure when using 3M Cubitron Xtract II sandpaper, the weight of the sander does all of the work for me. I do agree that the regular dust collection is quite bad, but if you remove the dust collector housing, there is a vacuum port, and when attached to a vacuum, dust collection is very good. One area it could be better is vibration, but it's nowhere near as bad as some of the old porter cable sanders and polishers I've used, and I haven't had any issues with numbness or anything like with those older sanders.

I've had the Bosch V20 variable speed ROS for several years. Home Depot has it on special for $59 right now including a soft bag and they do that sale pretty often. It is a workhorse though I'm not a fan of the included dust collection/capture systems on any ROS since I don't want to have to stop sanding to dump that out. I added the Rockler Dust Right hose and flexible adapter kit to it and ran it to my mini cyclone/shop vac and it is really efficient in removing the dust and preventing clogs.

Don't know that I've ever mentioned it to you, but I work with (or maybe work around) having carpal tunnel in both of my wrists/hands. As heavy duty body repair man, which also encompasses much of being a heavy duty mechanic by default, hand- fatigue is no joke. I've got 2 battery powered Ryobi hand sanders in my shop currently, looking to add a corded version of some one's sander because neither Ryobi sander is brushless or variable speed and my oh my do they have an appetite for fully charged batteries. Either sander can almost deplete a 3 or 4Ah HP battery in 10-15minutes of continuous use. If they'd spent 0.35¢ more per unit, they could've made much nicer sander by giving them variable speed triggers, an additional speed selection switch. Being that I currently don't have a Miter Saw, or a Table Saw, or a building with roof to put them in, I'm working only on smaller projects that I produce with relative ease, and hopefully, in sufficient numbers to work up to that stage as I grow and learn and relearn. I guess what I'm trying to say is thanks for video because it'll help me decide on "buy once, cry once", or "good enough for right now" sanders. Thanks for including the under powered "maybe ok for small projects, but currently not for larger furniture or other big stuff.

Matt, I have the battery powered Ryobi. It's a battery hog. 45mins on a 3Ah. And if you think the corded version is top heavy, the bigger the battery, the more top heavy this platform will be. I really wouldn't want a battery powered sander unless the cord made the impossible, and then, I wouldn't want that sander to be in Ryobi platform. I've got other Ryobi stuff I like just fine. I've got the Ryobi cat-fish-sander, and I like it much better. The balance is different. I'd still much variable speed (how much is a switch and a little more wiring. That could change how feel about the Ryobi sander. I mean that not every job requires, nor is it desirable to run the tool Wide-Open, All-The-Time.!

Interesting about the Bosch, I forgot to turn on my DE and I didn’t even notice, the dust just sat in the hose until I turned it on. I did notice that if my technique is off it will leave swirls. Lots of good info here, although I was a little disappointed that you left out an analysis in how well they, ummm, sanded. You know: does it leave pigtails in the wood, how quickly does it remove the wood, etc. Can't have everything, I guess. I would not have thought to include a drop test, which is silly because I'm extremely likely to drop these things. Off to get me a Yellow sander, and some of them Bessey clamps so I can clamp up the panels I'm sanding. Thanks!

There’s no direct correlation between heat and clogging sandpaper. The sandpaper clogs and the heat increases because of poor air flow. The poor air flow causes poor dust collection. That’s why I always prefer connecting my shop vac. I have a DeWalt sander and had to fabricate a connector for my shop vac. I’m disappointed that the sanders are not designed to accept standard size shop vac hoses.

Yes. I have a 5” Bosch, and basically what I did was bought a 1.5” pvc cap, traced a line around the plastic part that goes to dust bag and attached it to sander. Then I bought some 2” dust collection hose from amazon, some screw clamps and attached that. Then the dust hose to shop vac hose. The key though was using gaps - direct hose messes up sanding as the sander gets sucked to surface from too muc suction causing deep scratches on sanding. I put a piece of pvc in between hose and shop vac hose and drilled holes in the pvc until the suction sucked up the dust without being a magnet to the wood I was sanding. Too much suction is a bad thing. I’m not thinking about that though, even though some are.

yeah I noticed the same thing when you compared sanding with an extractor and without. I was sanding stain and finish off some boards and I was using a vac. I forgot to check the filter on the vac and it needed a clean. Before cleaning my Rotex in geared mode, it would go through paper very quickly and get major caking. After I cleaned the filter of the vac one piece of paper did the same work of many other pieces of paper and did it in less time.

Surprising result, I've had the smaller Makita for decades (the older BO5010 model I have is essentially identical to the newer ones) and been very happy with it, just recently replaced the motor brushes.... but I have to admit, the dust collection is not stellar, even with a shop vac hooked up. I've heard the DeWalt is really good, I'd like to go try one out but I don't really have any excuse to replace the old sander :) . Also surprising is the Bosch, I have a few corded Bosch tools (jigsaw, router, drill) and they are superb.

Nice. A bit of user error on the Skil, the canister is supposed to be seated horizontally (logo facing up) and pressed further onto the dust port.

Agreed, I used the Skil for 2 years after I got it on sale at a Menards and it was better than my craftsman and the same metabo

So, Milwaukee or DeWalt - who could think these two would be the winners 😂 Still, thank you for excluding budget options - I was hesitant, but not any more.

My Bosch finally went to pot on me today. Got a HF 1.5 miles from me so I’m trying out the 3 amp Hercules an while it is heavy I like it so far.

I have the Bauer and am quite pleased with it. Virtually zero dust when it's hooked up to a shop vac. And it's consistently on sale for $20. Personally I don't mind the power being on the weaker side as I actually enjoy sanding so the longer sanding time isn't a bother.

I've got the same one and have no complaints after about a year of use. My hand doesn't get fatigued or end with that tingling sensation after use. I've never used it for really large projects except for sanding a 14 foot old counter top, it didn't bother me then though.

DITTO to everything you just said. After finally using it with dust collection, I bought a second one as a back-up for $19.99.

Just used the BAUER sander for 2 hours straight, filmed it, collected dust well and didn’t get too hot, fatigued hands about 3/5 though lol

"drop test" that's next to useless. I never use these for finish. "hand fatigue/adsorbed vibration"!!?? that means its not working as well. This is the best review of them all. ill buy the one that gives you hand fatigue the most.

I prefer these types of usage testing over the bot testing, because I think it’s more inline with how I use the tool. I have the rigid sander and I would agree with where you placed it. It did great before I hooked it up to my shop vac, and even better after using sand net and shop vac. My hyper tough died after a few months of minimal use. Thanks for the video.

Another great video, thank you I have been using random orbit sanders for years and have never found the variable speed useful at all. Have had 2 6” sanders would definitely recommend the 6” ones the 5” in most cases as they are perform significantly better but are larger and heavier.

For what its worth I purchased a bauer cordless sander this summer to paint my van as I didn't want to run my monster compressor or destroy my old Porter Cable quicksand and I as I didn't want to spend much as I figured bodyshop dust would destroy it but the van is done and it is still going strong and i think I gave less then 30.00 bucks for it an run it on my Milwaukee m18 batteries
