Hey guys! Here is a video of how to wet sand and polish new clear coat on a car to get rid of orange peel. Hope it helps! By the way, you need to wait until the clear coat is fully cured before doing this. I would suggest waiting a month.

Hey Tobias, its Pat. Listen i recently saw another video on a Chevy Tahoe with a similar problem to your vehicle. what he did on his vehicle, after dry sanding and removing the clear coat, he used a special liquid with a micro fiber cloth to remove all contamination from the surface. What i saw him do, before he painted the entire surface is this. I notice, that where the paint was faded the most on the hood of the car, he painted that area at least twice, before he painted the entire hood area at least 4 times. Tobias, i believe that by painting the faded area first with a few coats of paint, it would prevent the faded area from protruding whenever the paint job is completed. i also believe that the paint gun that a person used makes a huge difference. I saw the video of you polishing the car, it looks a little better. Tobias, the can spray gun, does not gives you the same quality paint, in comparison to a regular or professional paint gun. Because the other guy in his video, uses a paint gun that gave the car an awesome finish. The spray gun will make your work look more professional.

Yeah, the clear coat isn't actually opaque. I think it just looks like that because when you initially spray it, it comes out kind of rough so the way the light reflects off it might make it look kind of opaque

thanks for this video, helped a great deal, especially how long to wait before sanding, I have a 15year old 3 series BMW with clear coat issues on the roof. I sanded, primed and applied base coat with rattle cans... Waited a week then applied the clear with a spray gun. I am happy with the result, the color match is good, so I`ll wait a few weeks then wet sand and buff as per your advice.. Thanks again from `Down Under`...

Nice man. You’re going to run into a few issues. Two passes probably is not enough. It’s going to be swirled and haze will pop back up. I suggest a medium light foam pad and an all in one compound/ protectant. Griots now sells pads (orange) and their AOI polish (yellow bottle) at auto zone. This will help cut some some more/ put a really nice shine as well as a protectant. I use “3d” hd one or speed. You can really get a mirror finish. Source: 15 year professional painter

I'm looking forward to seeing the video on that soon. It seems like it would be best to spray on a matching base coat and then the clear coat. I'm curious to see what you do next! Thanks!

Same thing for me MJ. Most of the Dodge Avengers from around 2008 that I see around LA also have this clear coat issue. Just like you said, I think for the roof I will be spraying the base coat and possibly also primer before that, depending on how much I sand down. Thanks for watching!

I'm no expert painter, but in your previous video it looked like your technique was the biggest cause of the orange peel. There were times when the nozzle was too far away, not perpendicular, and it also seemed like you were avoiding any overlapping. I'm going through a similar fix with an old vehicle I inherited...good luck!
@TobiasHolenstein

From what I understand spraying clear coat from a can is most likely going to cure with orange peel. Even the ratchets and wrenches guy got orange peel in his video when he did it and I think he is somewhat experienced, but idk for sure. Wishing you the best with your project!

Lotsa questions/Comments. 1) I noticed you only used (in the video) Mequiar's #4 polishing compound. Why didn't you follow up with the finer compounds? And why did you choose #4 versus their #105, 205, 305 series? 2) I see you used a wool pad. I tried one of those from a well known low cost tool store. The pad required me to tie shoelace type drawstrings to hold it on the wheel. Those dang shoestring ties kept coming undone and ruined my clear coat and paint. I did find some microfiber pads with elastic around the edge that do a good job of holding the pad on the wheel. Does it matter if I use a microfiber pad versus a wool pad? - oh yes, the wool pads threw strands of wool everywhere. 3) I did a light sanding with a 2500 grit paper, and after some buffing with the microfiber pad and 205 compound there were still spots that were not shinny. Am I being to gentle? I don't want to ruin my clear coat. 4) My buffing machine has a rotary knob labeled 1 to 4, with 4 being the fastest. I did not see a conversion to rpms. It looked like your buffer has the same type of labels. What speed did you use on your buffer?

I JUST finished applying 3 coats of base and 5 coats of clear to my 2011 Honda Civic (as you may be familar, the clear coat on these was subpar from the factory), and I also have a little bit of orange peel and grittiness. In fact, in looks almost exactly like your work prior to buffing. I was a bit nervous that I had messed up my car, but I didn't realize that the wet sanding and polishing cleaned it up this much. @@TobiasHolenstein I just finished the trunk lid of my 2011 Honda Civic, and it looks and feels like glass! I was very impressed with my results since this was my first time ever painting a car (I have primered a car before but used an actual spray gun). I ran into a few issues, but I could attribute both to the spray can instead of using an actual spray gun. 1. Unless I shook up the can before each layer, it would have a tendency to lose power, and I got some paint drops which messed up my basecoat. I fixed this by waiting for an 1hr an then sanding them down with 600. 2. I definitely had some paint nibs (dried paint that will settle on the car from overspray) and orange peel which i was able to remove and smooth out by lightly wet sanding with 1000 grit and polishing out with 1500 grit. I ended up doing 4 coats of base on my trunk lid and 6 coats on my roof, followed by 6 coats of clear on both, and my reasoning for this is because spray cans do not cover an area nearly as thick as a layer sprayed by a spray gun (at least in my experience using them). Moreover, the extra coats of clear allowed me to sand out majority of any mistakes I had while still leaving plenty of clear coat to protect against two of the three panels most damaged by sun rays. After I wet sanded with 1500, I did 4 passes with a DA and Meguiars 105 heavy cutting compound and finished up with 2 passes of Meguiars 205 Finishing Polish. If there is anyway to give you my email privately, I would be more than happy to send you pictures.

@TobiasHolenstein
@TobiasHolenstein 3 года назад
Thanks! My main regret of doing this was that before I initially sprayed the clear coat I didn't completely remove some of the white areas. Like where there was damaged clear coat, but it was still really stuck onto the paint of the car (pretty much just on the right side of the hood). What happened is, over time those white areas continued to peel a little bit and of course some of the new clear coat came off with it. Looking back, I would have made sure to completely get rid of those white areas and I think it would have been totally fine. As for some advice, I may advise to spray an extra layer or 2 of clear coat just to leave some room for error when polishing. I didn't have any issues with this, but I think it's a good idea and I would probably do that in the future as well.

Tobias Thanks for sharing your vehicle videos, I would like to recommend a better repair video for the cars surface using spray paint cans and clear coat. It is by an Irish guy I believe he made a couple of them he has a channel named MAD4MOTORS it shows you how you made a mistake on the hood not using a base primer or base color before laying down clear coat. Please watch his 3 videos one on an Audi I think and the other two on a santa fe hood like yours Good Luck Jerry

Thank you for your comment! I know there are other ways you can do a clear coat repair job, like you were saying, sanding down to the primer and spraying primer and base coat before the clear coat. However, I just wanted to do a quick fix that will protect my paint and prevent more damage to my hood as well as make it look better. When I get around to doing the roof of the car, I will be spraying new primer and base coat, since the damage is a bit worse up there.
@thronewalker1153
@thronewalker1153 3 года назад
Fixing clear coat is different from the paint process. Your thinking of starting with metal. Spraying it with a primer. Spraying the base coat then clear coat. He’s only removing his clear coat because it’s peeling. After he removed it then he recoated it.

I would love to do a video on the Celica soon. The last time I started it up, fuel spewed out from underneath somewhere so I need to get that taken care of 😅 I haven't really done car videos in a while so if I did I would probably make a new channel to post car related videos

You do not need to wet sand new clear coat if you spray it correctly according to the technical data sheets of the product you use ...

may i ask if i can wet sand my base coat before spraying my clearcoat? is it ok? would it stay glossy or it will be matte?
@TobiasHolenstein
@TobiasHolenstein 4 года назад
I don't have much experience with base coat, but from what I understand, I don't think base coat requires wet sanding before applying the clear coat and i believe the gloss comes from the clear coat that you spray over the base coat. So I think as long as you have a glossy clear coat you should be good.
@kennethmabus381
@kennethmabus381 4 года назад
I wouldn't mess with the color. Try and laydown a thick smooth shiny base and then you can luster out your coats of clear. My wet sanding, rotory cut and polish. Sometimes with new paint you can just do a 3 step rotory......light cut compound, finer polish and finest polish using your different pads up to wool.

Right on. You learn by doing and making mistakes, it's how it works. You don't learn by nitpicking other's first steps. There is nothing instinctive about bodywork and painting, you progress by doing and, recognizing the mistakes and figuring out how to fix it.

You would get much better results going with 1500 then 2500 or 3000.. then use proper buffing pads… ones made for sitting and ones made for polish… after 2 passes with your rubbing compound switch to a polish pad and use machine polish. Then wax… it will look brand new…
