This review was really helpful! I just ordered one for myself. I recently had a baby and have COMPLETELY filled my phone with photos and videos of her! My windows computer hasn’t been letting me upload them, I’m thinking because there are too many.. So I’m hoping and praying this works for me!!

same happened to me, can't transfer from iphone to mac because too many items, so I hope this works, at that speed it could take weeks though, hopefully it's faster.

I was trying to find out for about an hour if I can play .mkv from this flash drive directly, finally this video gave me the answer, thanks! My main problem is that HD movies won't fit on my iPad storage, this drive will hopefully help me watch HD movies on my iPad on the plane.

I have a question when i want to open the pictures on my laptop there are icons among pictures there that don’t open. What are those? Is it possible these are pictures ? If yes then if i delete pics from my iPhone, i can loose the pictures which i cannot open on my computer

Hey David, great video!! I have a question that would be much appreciated if you were able to help me out. My question is - are you able to select what gets uploaded onto the drive from your iPhone or does it just grab every single bit of data and stores it on there immediately? This is a main concern for me because although I would want everything backed up, because of my occupation I need to only have hi-res videos on the drive in order to free up space on my I phone

Thank the you for your informative video. I liked the feature description and mention that you can record video straight to the ixpand drive. I watched this because I was looking for a comparison between this drive and the other Sandisk ixpand drive that doesn't have an adapter and looks like a straight stick. I wonder which is older, if there is a different version of USB, if the menu to manage features is the same, and what the switch looking indentation on the side is. There's also a curved designed one that seems to stack the lightning connector on top of the usb connector and I wonder if it is as tedious and uncomfortable as it looks to me?

It's slow on some devices. As it depends on the amount of files that you have. As it has to scan the whole library. Then index them. And as you said. It's looks to see how much power the device is at.. It will work slower as to not deplete your battery. As the last thing you want. Is for the thing to shut down in the middle of a Backup...

So glad I found you! I have a question & hope you can help me. I just bought the iXpand SanDisk Flash Drive Luxe 256 gig and love it. Got all the photos & videos backed up from my iPhone 13 Pro. I’ve never used a MacBook but my daughter has one so I plugged the flash drive in to her Mac. All the photos are there & easy to open. Problem is I can’t figure out how to open the video files on the Mac. I can see that they are there, but they are in faint text and I can’t click on them. Any idea how to open these? They are all .mov files made on my phone, so should be iOS compatible. Thanks- Ann

Ah, that stinks. Do you still have your old phone? Even if the screen is dark it might still be accessible when plugged in. There are a variety of devices on the market for backups now too, and, of course, software programs too. Good luck!

Hi Dave! I have a question since I’m not super tech smart… so I bought that Qubii Duo because I have like 30,000 photos 🤦‍♀️ and I have an iPhone and my mom has an Android … so thanks to you I now understand Qubii but I came across this Sandisk product at the store and now I don’t know which one I should go with? I’m sick of paying iCloud monthly. So in your opinion which product do you think is best? Also I’m still unsure if the phone keeps the photos on the phone (once it’s backed up) until I choose to delete them myself? I just don’t want to back everything up and then go on my phone and have no pictures if that makes sense? Any help would be much appreciated!

Thank you Dave - so pleased I found your site. I am trying to download my entire icloud photo backup- 40000 photos.Crazy i know! I just want to sort them out and store them on a HDD. So far, I've got 12000 copied. Just needing to know if I can I delete these from the flash drive AND the icloud before reconnecting to copy more. How do I go about deleting cloud photos - do I have to do that from the phone?? Greatly appreciate your assistance.

Very helpful video, fellow David! Few questions. I’m interested in this device solely to transfer music files from my Apple devices, to the flash drive itself. Can such be done? Will it rename the files, or keep the original titles? And lastly, can the flash drive be inserted in to devices such as a home stereo, to play the music? Thank you for your time!

Being able to transfer music onto it is a function of the app that's saved the music. A Spotify offline playlist, for example, is locked up (I believe) so you can't access those files to copy. In terms of plugging it into a stereo, well, if you use the SanDisk backup software it might not be compatible. If you copy files yourself and they're all in .mp3 or .aac (perhaps) format, it should work. Haven't tried what you're suggesting, which is why I can't be definitive with this answer. :-)

Hi Dave. Did I understand you correctly when you said that I can actually plug this into my iphone and take pictures directly onto the san disc without using my iphone storage? Going to Disney and I purchased this to download my pictures from my iphone to free up space but if I can just take them while I'm plugged in and they save directly onto the disc then I just may do that. Great instructional video. I also bought the iXpand Flash Drive for my IPad Pro but it is painfully slow to transfer large files from the iPad to the flash drive. I wanted to free up some space on my iPad but copying movies or videos is extremely slow and difficult.

I agree with you with iCloud.. I wish there would be an option that will pop up when your deleting something on your iPhone and if you want to save it on your iCloud..

I can't find it. It seems like iCloud has some settings that are configurable and I see a message about deleting in icloud but? It feels confusing and I can't reliably see where that happens. Look also on Apple ID settings for iCloud, not just the phone? I backup notes in an email account but I think my phone and iCloud are not totally mirrored. I used up all iCloud space but can't read clearly what is in there or choose what to let go of.

The new luxe version has usb-c as well so it’ll work with my iPad Pro usb-c iPhone 14 pro and future iPhones when they change from the lightning to usb-c like the ipad pros have changed.!!!

I don’t think so app data can’t be read by any other app! That you would have to use with icloud backup only or select files and share to the sandisk app! Correct me if Im wrong if anybody has a way to do this!

Is it possibly super slow because the photos it is backing up aren’t actually ON your device? Rather, they are streaming from iCloud, via your device, to the drive? iCloud is a time-murderer, and it drives me bananas!

Thank you for the video. It's very useful. I have a few questions: Is there an option for manual backups? My memory card is only 32GB, and the content in the iphone exceeds 100GB. Is it okay if I just want to backup voice memos and notes? Once backed up, will these two files disappear from my iphone automatically? Can the two files (voice memo and memo) saved in FlashDrive be opened and play on a PC?

Of course, you can just backup individual items, and when you’re able to utilise the “move function” for data, naturally, it’ll automatically remove it from its point of origin..

You can save the photo to files app (in iCloud) and then delete the photo in the photos app which it will delete in the photos in iCloud as well, but it will save in files on iCloud Freeing up the phone space but still able to be downloaded from the cloud. Very easy just select photos or videos then click share button, then save to files, then make a folder and save it to files in ICLOUD and youll be good to go!!! Stay safe hope someone figures it out very easy and it works like you think it would have. Just not through a “backup” It’s a different method.

You can setup the Sandisk Connect Wireless EOL flash drive as a Plex like Web Server. Accessing its videos/audio file links on a Public website which are shareable by anyone on the same wifi. Can anything similar be done with this version? I just posted how I used the Sandisk Connect Wireless.

Just curious.... will it charge my iPhone if i plug a charger or a power bank to the USB end of the data pen while its connected to the phone from the other end. that would help if we are using the the pen to directly stream a video we are shooting and the batt gets low... just wanna know if that a possibility, pls find out about that and let us know, very helpful review... thank you very much! am planing to buy one, a little expensive than a normal charger, thats y i came finding review about this... and this really helped..

I didn't test that, but I'm about 95% sure that it will not work to plug power into the USB-3 end of the device and then also plug it into your iPhone. For a 100% answer check with SanDisk customer service.

Try plugging it into another computer to see if it's the device or your computer (even a friend's computer or one at the store). But... Windows XP? It's way past time to upgrade, that's not even supported by Microsoft anymore, which means you are very susceptible to malware and other problems. 😞

If I download the lphone pictures on a windows computer, does the pictures remember the original time and date or the date changes with the date I download them? It happened before with other method of backup on Windows.

hii , I'm about to purchase this , and I have a doubt, if I use it for backup only option for full photos and videos ,and after connecting it on my Mac/windows computer can I view the photos and videos and copy them to Macbook as a normal Pendrive itself??? or its like encrypted like non viewing on computer?? pls reply..and which is the newer version? should I buy flip because its cheaper and also I use 14 pro max and luxe cost more can I use expand flip with org adapter when I upgrade to iPhone 15 ??

Nice review, thank you, what about iCloud compatibility? I mean I use iCloud and most of my camera roll isn’t fully loaded on my iPhone. If I want to put some of my old files already on the cloud on the Sandisk USB key, is it working? Is the Sandisk app can download them? If it works maybe it’s the reason of the slow transfer you speak about (if your files needs to be downloaded from the cloud before getting copied on the key).

How do you have things on iCloud that aren't on your phone? When I delete a photo from my phone the iCloud "mirror" deletes it too (which has always seemed a stupid behavior!)

I believe it is possible to have photos only on icloud and not on the device when you have the setting turned on to automatically upload and store all photos and videos to icloud rather than directly to the device’s storage. I don’t know if this flash drive will be able to access the photos saved on icloud.

Dave, Great video presentation! I have a few questions. If my iphone battery runs out during the photo back up process (there are 3200 photos and 50 short family videos) should I recharge my phone and then continue with back up or down load the photos already backed up to my tablet and then continue with back up? Will my tablet recognize where the backup left off and continue with the rest of the down load or will the entire file of photos be downloaded again from the beginning? Final question, can the entire content of the flash drive be deleted and start over if needed? Thanks, John

It's super flexible; you can yank out the unit at any point in the backup and next time you plug it in the backup will resume right where it left off. Easy. In terms of deleting everything, yes, it's not a write-once-and-you're-stuck device :-)

How do I navigate to the Files app in the iPad and transfer those files to the drive? I can't see any way to transfer FILES as in FOLDERS from the iPad to the drive. Please help.

Not sure if you or anyone else can help me but ... can I upload from this flash drive directly onto my external hard drive without a computer and just a hub port? I'm doing a wilderness hike for 50 days; vlogging the whole thing. I have no access to internet or wifi, and no computer, ipad, or cellular data on my iphone. This device certainly helps get videos off my camera, but I doubt it will hold 50 days worth of vlogging. Any help from anyone is greatly appreciated; thanks in advance!!
