yep like i'm going to get another expensive cable that will just get in the way when i can just use wireless data transfer and transfer my files to usb or usb flash drives using a wireless usb hub .

Howdy folks. It should be back in stock on Amazon now. It is more expensive than third party options but worth it for the relability in my opinion. I used inexpensive lightning adapter from Amazon and transferred very heavy files from IPad to Kingston 128GB SD card ( US$20) Worked perfectly. Unexpectedly fast. Perfect answer to storage problems.

I normally use the Sandisk iXpand but my new one had suddenly gotten loose on the lighting connector. Everything else connects to my phone so it's the iXpand usb that's busted, so I was looking for an alternative this will be great I think. Ok so I love your explanations: appears wireless Apple has gone BACK TO the early 2000s. I’m okay with that, I remember sooooo much of attaching this port to that port.. it is the only way I feel in control of what I’m working with. Remembering passwords on every electronic tablet etc is exhausting. I’m old school - put this to that, then press done. Ty so much. I’ve been away from my fun projects because of wifi latency, this is my morning oatmeal. Ty again!!! Subscribed

Doh! I got so excited to learn I could use external memory devices that I completely forgot about the fat32 format for apple interchange.. 🤦‍♂️ been using my phone for so much for so many years, not using my pc in forever.. Thanks so much! I had no idea how to do this or where to look to see where my flash drive would show on my iphone. I did make the mistake of buying the standard Lightning to USB Camera Adapter with not charging port. Like you said, the USB takes power and it would't work until I bought the Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter with the charging port, after that, everything worked fine.

Thanks for sharing this. I’ve been able to don this for a while using a WD WiFi SSD. It’s way better with the files app and USB-C now. I sure hope they give us the ability to actually “transfer” stuff some day. As much as I like my iPad it feels like I’m swimming up stream with data transfers.

If a person is really worried about totally losing fotos, mention that they can transfer to the 2nd backup prior to deleting from iphone/ipad - this way also helps in the event that the thumb drive is faulty (you would find out prior to deleting the iphone/ipad foto) and nothing would be lost.

I picked up the ORICO usb 3.0 4 port hub on amazon, also a SanDisk T5 1 TB SSD drive and an Anker micro sd usb card reader and iPadOS will mount both and you can copy files back and forth to your heart’s content.

never got my 1tb hard drive to connect but its not ssd and maybe it was taking like FOREVER to finish reading the file structure of the drive on the first go around..... have not tested it again but will one of these days when I feel up to it....

Let me know how you get on Wayne. It seems to be a little random as to what works and what does not. Smaller flash based drives that are FAT formatted seem to be the most reliable.

hi. my wife has also a iphone 7 plus and it is ruung out of space..i got a lexar micro sd card that i used to move file back and forth easily without itune.. itune delete the whole files on the iphine even if i wanted to add only one pictures.. but for some reason the lexar app doesnt recognized the micro sdc card even though it is connected and i download the app still doesnt work;.. does the items allow easy transfer from iphone to a usb and vice versas as long the ios is updated? please comment

Ipad mini 5 note: You don't get options when you get the "save to files" button. Just press it and when it is ready it takes you to the files page and then you choose to save to the connected USB and then press save on top right. Little different but I might have saved someone an hour 🙂. Thanks for this video.

wonderful (long awaited) tool..... been doing my iphone and ipad ios updates this way.... I download the firmware file off the web then transfer them over to my mackbook and finally do the update in itunes.... ios13 is "supposed' to let you do updates over your phone but so far..... nada. :(

I know this was made a while ago, but this seems to be the best option for transferring a ton of pics. I noticed that they don't transfer as "live photos". Is there any way to maintain the live feature when putting them on the USB stick?

Live Photo’s gets tricky everywhere except on Apple iCloud Drive as it is actually a separate video file. I haven’t worked out a good way to do this .

Hey there. The video files from iOS should be in a standard .mov video format? Perhaps you need a video player on your PC that is compatible? I use and recommend VLC Player.

Thanks a bunch. Great explanation, easy to understand. But i notice that all the pics i transfer do not show the date they were originally taken. Solution? I have 50 gb of pics / videos / screen shots that i am trying to get off my icloud so I can stop paying every month for the storage.

Yeah unfortunately that’s one of the major drawbacks. I would recommend using something like Google Photos.

Great video, thanks Pete. I have not been able to save full resolution images from Photos to files with iPadOS. It only saves a reduced version of the original. Do you know of a way around this? I’ve tried setting photos to ‘keep originals’ in Settings, but same results.

Yeah I haven’t used this for a while. The best way I’ve found is to use iCloud Drive as it keeps things in the iOS universe.

If you have a samsung phone from recent years, it comes with a type c to USB adapter. Just plug it into your iPads type c (if new enough) and you can then connect a USB flash drive

🙏🏻 thank you for the info.. just bought one of these cables... iphone so full can't budge... now if I delete the original photos in my iPhone ... will that delete action on my Iphone then cause the photos (copies ie backups ) in the cloud to also delete when they synch and update .🤔🤔🤔 which storage has priority

Hey there. So iCloud is a little flawed. If you delete on a device it also deletes the backup. 🤦🏻‍♂️ So you’d need to backup somewhere else (USB drive, google Drive etc) and then delete. Weirdly if you run out of space it will “offload” some iCloud data without deleting it from iCloud. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

When importing a large selected group of photos to external flash drive, do your photos remain in sequential orders? I’ve had problem with that using different method. I would like the order of My photos to remain as they were chronologically taken. Thanks so much I’m glad I’m finally getting clued in to this system after much procrastination

Hi Great video, I jsut wanted to be sure so if you delete the photos off of your phone after exporting them into the usb drive they will still be in the usb drive correct? Also can you export videos onto a usb drive using this same method???

Thanks Pete. Isn’t this dongle (Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter) a better buy than Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader? I van use a card reader to do everything the second device does? Am I missing something?

actually the trick was to format the flash drive to FAT32 format, thanks a lot for that, previously it was on NTFS due to which it wasnt working.

Thanks very much. One question: how long would you expect it would take to download 200 photos from an ipad to a flash drive in the manner you describe? I found that it took over an hour. Is this an expected time?

Yes it’s quite slow due to the USB 2.0 speeds in iOS. These days using cloud storage like iCloud Drive, Google Drive etc is generally quicker and better.

Can I transfer Slow Motion video files from my iphone 11 (120-240 Fps) to a Flash drive to work on my Laptop with the same resolution and Fps of the original videos? Because I tried to transfer with Dropbox videos came out not resolution and Fps that I wish. (It came out on slow motion but rendered at 30 Fps).

Interesting one? I haven’t had experience exporting anything but 30fos or 60fps. I don’t think even LumaFusion supports 120-240fps. Apologies! Might need to ask around in some iOS video forums on this one? 🤔

A bit late to this party, but the arrival of a new granddaughter, and the many photos now taken, has me here. Could you use the adapter to transfer and burn photos to a disc via an Apple usb superdrive? A disc would be harder for my Daughter in Law to lose than a USB drive🙄 Really useful video, I'll keep watching the channel.

Yeah it’s quite challenging to copy a large volume of photos. I would use something like Google Photos to backup and transfer photos.

Yeah it’s probably the image type. You’ll need an image viewer that supports the HEIC files. Irfanview works well in my experience.
