Yes, but unfortunately, it was too late. Charlotte was too angry about having been so senselessly fired. It was tantamount to disrespect, even tho' Colbourne didn't mean it that way, it was still a big mistake on his part. And now he lives to regret it, just like his housekeeper warned him. I love that lady!

@@miriama.zavala155 I wonder if Alexander would've done it if he even knew Charlotte's story. Like, he was super open about his past relationship. Let's give Mr. Colbourne some credit. He married young to a woman that loved partying more than she loved him. He is obviously a family man. He's raising two children that are no blood relation to him whatsoever. As soon as he's not around she lusts after the first guy that shows her some attention even though she's married. He firmly believes that he had some responsibility for his wife's death because of what she said to her and because he didn't stay and party with her. Then Lennox adds his little jabs. He loves Charlotte so much that his fear of doing the same to her and having a similar outcome is more than he can live with. He wants her back, but can't totally commit our of that fear. He loves her enough to give her up rather than have her hurt beyond repair. I love this guy! They will get a happy ending. There was too much outcry about the first ending of Season 1. Patience. It will eventually be very rewarding.

Agree, however Darcy writes the long letter to Eliz immediately after she turns down his proposal. That gave her something to hang onto. He needed to hear that his behaviour would not be tolerated. Especially not by her and I don't think he knew what to say in return because he is so used to being in charge and Charlotte will not be controlled. I believe that this is exactly why Sidney fell in love with her and their relationship was very direct and honest from the get go. The relationship with Alexander was one sided with absolute honesty, for Alexander would flip back and forth from the beginning. I was very disappointed with him and sincerely hope that he has found himself when he next returns to Sanditon, based on the preview showing his coming to another ball or dinner gathering I hope. 💔💔💔 now in this scene Charlotte can’t hear him! 😭😭😭 I want to hug Charlotte and tell her He brought up Augusta because he thought you would be proud! Charlotte had told him “who even listen to her in this house of silence” Alexander wanted to tell her about the great change she made in his life and he’s now even listening to Augusta’s words. That’s such a HUGE change for him! He never listened to her before, and he finally realized it. He just wanted to share that with her, but Charlotte’s so rattled because she wasn’t expecting the initial dismissal so she’s still in that room where he said “shame and regret for the feelings I had towards a governess” that she can’t hear his words at all. She won’t allow any more arrows to pierce her heart 💘 and she’s on defense. He lost her trust, and now Alexander will have to win her trust all over again (what she said when they were talking about calming Hannibal and it was similar to winning the girls over). 💔😭😭💔
@susanfirth9883
@susanfirth9883 2 года назад
I hadn't thought of that, but you're absolutely right. He was proud of himself for listening to Augusta, and it's what Charlotte wanted -- it matters to him SO much that he can't speak, and his words are all jumbled 😢 For a man who speaks so carefully and properly, his lack of clarity makes him retreat back into his shell. This scene has so much going on under the surface, and if they could only speak what they're thinking.... Maddening, but it will make their final coming together so incredible in S3 ❤️

I'm moved to tears every time I see that scene with Augusta - that's some very fine acting on her part! Much as I enjoyed S2 and all the story lines and the ensemble cast, we really didn't have enough time with Charlotte, Colbourne, Leonora and Augusta. In fact I figured out that Charlotte and Colbourne only had a total of approximately 30 minutes of screen time!! Not long into S2, it becomes clear that both Charlotte and Colbourne are surprised and thrown off kilter by their romantic attraction to each other. She and he had both sworn off love and marriage after falling in love and then being betrayed. At the end of S2, we're left wondering why exactly did Colbourne force Charlotte to leave her governess position, and why did Charlotte not allow Colbourne to finish whatever he started to say to her in the Parker home. All we do know is that she and he made a choice, and now they are both unhappy with their lives. We know what Charlotte wants, but what does Colbourne want? He's confusing us. Ah! The look on Alexander Colbourne's face when he sees Charlotte again in S3 makes it quite clear that Colbourne now knows exactly what he wants. The looming questions for S3 are-Can he still get her? If so, how? So, I am definitely looking forward to Season 3. For anyone who hasn't been able to put enough of the pieces together and is still trying to make sense of Charlotte and Colbourne's love story, here is a guide. Like Charlotte Heywood, Alexander Colbourne is a compelling character. Obviously, Colbourne is not pining for his dead wife who married him for his money, and then continued her love affair with Lennox after she married Colbourne. Marrying solely for financial security was the norm, even during the time in which Jane Austen lived. Apparently, Lucy and Lennox were genuinely in love with each other-but, unlike Colbourne, Lennox was not a wealthy man. So, she chose to marry Alexander Colbourne-which explains why Lennox told Charlotte that Colbourne stole Lucy from him. Nevertheless, Colbourne does deeply regret having spoken so harshly to Lucy when he discovered her infidelity and that she was pregnant with Lennox's child. He believes that what he said to Lucy was so damaging that it destroyed her will to live. So, he feels responsible for her death and for Leo not having a mother. Colbourne's compassionate heart and strong conscience have not allowed him to forgive himself-even after all these years. In S2 we see how compassionately Colbourne treats his horse and his dog, and how he tries to shield his daughter and his niece-and now Charlotte-from himself. Colbourne is apparently afraid of ever destroying anyone again, so he puts up barriers between himself and anyone that he loves. Charlotte helped Colbourne to begin tearing down those barriers that separate him from the people that he loves. But now Charlotte is one of those people-so we see Colbourne as he struggles with his internal conflict between his desire to have Charlotte and his desire to protect her from himself. Interestingly, it is not until Colonel Lennox tells Colbourne that Charlotte is in love with him that he realizes that she is indeed in love with him, and therefore she needs to be protected from him. Because Charlotte is so unique-she is neither meek nor submissive-Colbourne hadn't noticed the outward signs of her feelings about him. During the time that Jane Austen wrote, men who did not intend to marry often wore a signet ring (engraved with their initials) on the pinky of their left hand-just as Alexander Colbourne does. Colbourne often twists the signet ring that he wears on his left hand and appears to be thinking. My guess is that is yet another reason why he chose to dismiss Charlotte. Colbourne knows that he is in love with Charlotte, and it is obvious that he desires her. The way he kisses her makes that quite clear. After Colonel Lennox told Colbourne that Charlotte is in love with him, Colbourne realized that, as her employer she might submit to his desires because he is in a position of authority over her. Now that he knows how he feels about her and how she feels about him, allowing Charlotte to remain his subordinate would have been highly unethical. Since Colbourne-unlike Lennox-is a man of integrity, he could not bring himself to allow her to continue to be his subordinate, and therefore subject to his will. That's why he forces Charlotte to leave, even after she acknowledges that she was a willing participant during their romantic moments. Since Alexander Colbourne is a man of integrity, he knew he had to let Charlotte go-even though he obviously wants her. Colbourne went to the Parkers' home to ask her to return because Augusta begged him to do so, not because he believed that was the right thing to do. (Colbourne told Augusta that she doesn't understand-which, of course, is true. Augusta doesn't know that her uncle is in love with Charlotte and that Charlotte is in love with him.) Colbourne did not object to what Charlotte said because he knew that she made the right decision, even though she made that decision because she believes that she means nothing to him. Of course, that is not true. This is a man who clearly is deeply in love with Charlotte. When Colbourne goes to see Charlotte with the intention of asking her to return, Charlotte also makes the right decision. Sadly, at the end of Season 2, we were left with two people who are deeply in love with each other-and absolutely miserable because of the choice they had to make.

Alexander allowed what Lennox said to him drive his decision to break things off with Charlotte, believing her would be capable of loving Charlotte as she deserves, failing her as he did his wife. Poor Charlotte was hurt at the way Alexander had treated her not realizing what Lennox has said to Alexander. Charlotte believed he cared for her and wanted something more, but then discharges her under the pretense that the relationship was inappropriate. Then Alexander realizes he was wrong arriving at her doorstep to tell her how he really feels, and was looking to propose to Charlotte, when Charlotte interrupts, telling him she is preparing to leave town. I guess it’s possible that he loves and cares for her so much but he is afraid of disappointing her. It still feels like there is some piece missing in his story from his past which makes him very undecided about his love for Charlotte. It took a lot of guts for him to admit to Charlotte that not only did his wife have a relationship with another man but also a child. That had to be very difficult thing to confess. He truly may believe he is not good enough for her. He is so much more complex than Sydney. When he first apologized to her for inappropriate behavior I thought he wanted to make them more equal before continuing their relationship knowing that a man should not be in a relationship with an employee. His choice of words and his demeanor were very off putting to Charlotte. Poor thing she has been through too much. I think if she knew it was Lennox who made him second guess himself she could have helped him through it and they could have still been together. Lennox was really rotten to say what he said. I guess if he couldn’t have Charlotte he wanted to make sure Colbourne couldn’t either.

Whatever insecurities or doubts he may have had about himself Lennox only amplified them. What a cruel man. Or is there something deeper? If he was unable to provide for Lucy's emotional needs, perhaps he feels he's incapable to meet those of Charlotte. Yet, the tenderness, in moments with Charlotte, shows a man of deep caring and a willingness to try to change. When she witnesses his interactions with Hannibal and Luna, she is touched by his caring spirit. He's a complex man for sure. HOW many movies have we all watched where we're screaming if only 2 people could learn to TALK to each other?! This certainly is one of those! But, we have to remember that, especially with Alexander, he is a buttoned-up, stoic, emotionally scarred man of the 19th century...emotional honesty didn't come easily. Still, letting the COLONEL, of all people, be the impetus for Alexander's abrupt turn about just doesn't make since! I forget Austen is NOT writing in 2022 (or the spirit of her.) Patience. They will sort this out. I certainly hope there's lots of attention to each of them becoming aware of how much they mean to each other...and what they fruitfully do about it! AND...I've noticed as I've rewatched all their scenes together that he considers everything she tells him, and makes an adjustment. A larger adjustment is warranted now. It will take him some time to consider her words, which were truthful, to valiantly try again...the right way. It's inevitable. Like magnets and gravity. Colbourne needs to get it together on multi-levels (tell her the truth, overcome his fears, forgive himself). I also look forward to seeing how she will be constantly on his mind. When Charlotte made that speech about how she too had misunderstood her feelings for a "kind of affection...but couldn't feel such tenderness for someone who showed me so little respect," it seemed to me that she just wanted to hurt Mr. Colbourne as much as he'd hurt her. And then by seeing the arrow hit home and his pained reaction she had the confirmation that he did love her. If she was just angry and thought he was a jerk, she wouldn't have cried when he left. When he hesitated at the door and almost looked like he would turn around, I was literally screaming at him to go back. In my fan fiction (in my head, not written down) he does hear her burst into tears and goes back to her, takes her in his arms and says "Please don't cry, Charlotte. You'll break my heart." After a few moments of melting into his arms, she pushes him away and demands to know what Col. Lennox had said to him, since everything was fine between them until that point. Whereupon he confesses everything. Then Charlotte points out that history wouldn't repeat itself with her because she was an entirely different kind of person than Lucy. I imagine her saying something like, "Do you really think, if my handsome husband asked me to return to my beautiful home, on our magnificent estate, by the charming seashore, that I would say 'No, I want to stay here among these virtual strangers, spending your money on champagne, concerts, garden parties, and fancy dresses.' Or perhaps you worry that you'll revert to your formerly sullen, solitary ways. Do you think I couldn't tease, cajole, or even scold you into a better humor, like I just did in a matter of a few weeks?" She scolds some more, he apologizes again, and she finally says she'll think about it. She has a headache and wants to go lie down. "I'm sure you can show yourself out." There's your cliff hanger, without the ridiculous engagement to Ralph Starling. I think my version would have given us girls a little more hope.

I think what she meant by him showing her little respect is because he says that they shouldn’t have kissed her those two times and that he took advantage of her because he’s her employer. She kissed him right back but he doesn’t consider that at all. It shows that he thinks little of her ability to decide for herself how she feels about him and who she wants to kiss. He also insinuates that he thinks of her only as an employee and nothing more which is also insulting to Charlotte since she thought Xander had feelings for her beyond an employee/employer relationship. All these reasons combined are why Charlotte ultimately chose to stop his explanation. If the first words out of his mouth are merely apologizing for the circumstance and not his actual words, basically admitting he didn’t want to ask her to come back, and that the house misses him, then what else is left to hear? With every word Xander speaks, he wounds her even more. Her heart is breaking and bleeding in front of him and these are the words he chooses to use? No, she shouldn’t have to continue to let him hurt her even more. I hurt for her but I really hurt for Augusta and Leo because they have absolutely no idea why she’s gone.

He had absolutely no choice but to leave as she told him that she cannot have tender feelings for a man who treats her with so little respect and that she will not come back as a governess either. I can understand her though. What I'm wondering is what did she mean with little respect, that he kissed her as an employer or that he fired her?
@kcreagan9799
@kcreagan9799 2 дня назад
The fact he kissed her passionately, learned that she already dealt with heartache and betrayal and then tells her he regrets kissing her and ends by firing her. He did treat her with disrespect, especially back then when kisses meant a lot more than today. She was obviously crushed and just wanted to get away from him. If he had immediately apologized, admitted he was an idiot and professed his love, things may have been different. No one wants to hear that the "house misses your presence." 😂

Interesting watching Colbourne spinning the ring on his left hand in several scenes. I'm thinking it's a monogrammed initial ring of his late wife, Lucy. Perhaps when the ring comes off he'll let go of his past and will be ready to move on from Lucy to "forge a new path" in life. Hummm ... time will tell! Can't wait!!

@jl su I think it’s a set up to make you think 🤔 he’s going to ask for her hand in marriage. It’s so we understand a proposal is on his mind, he was going to ask for her hand in marriage. He fidgets with the ring because it’s a calming, soothing jester of his. He does it at the garden party too when he’s nervous, uncomfortable, feels out of place. 🌊🎩👒🎯💙💗

During the time that Jane Austen lived and wrote, the late 18th and early 19th century, English gentlemen frequently wore a signet ring (like the one Alexander wears) on the pinky finger of their left hand to indicate that they did not intend to marry. While I am guessing that is the intended significance Sanditon's writers expect the audience to attach to Alexander's signet ring, I should also point out that this particular accessory also carried enormous cultural and historical significance as well. "Traditionally, signet rings were worn on the pinky finger and used by gentlemen, particularly gentlemen involved with business or politics, as a seal to sign important documents. Engraved with the wearers family crest, the signet ring would be dipped into hot wax before being used to print a signature."
@Jean-wk7on
@Jean-wk7on 2 года назад
@jl su One more thing-men definitely did not wear signet rings with their wife's initials on them. That would have been unthinkable! During that period in history, the status of women was beneath the status of men. So, doing such a thing would have lowered his status in the eyes of other men. Signet rings and the engraving on them carried a significant amount of social importance. As a member of the landed gentry, Alexander Colbourne's signet ring would either have his family's crest or his initials emblazoned on it.

I’m curious what others think. I’m not certain that he was going to propose to her but after she says their emotions got the best of them, he shakes his head and mouths something that looks like “I” Was he going to say I love you? Then he stops bc she says she was wrong about loving him? It's at about 2:27
@Mandyporter3
@Mandyporter3 2 года назад
BLH says that the writers purposefully left it ambiguous but that he decided personally (and I think it comes across in the way he plays it) that AC was going to propose before Charlotte cuts him off. Then I think what really clinches his decision not to is when she says “I couldn’t have such tender feelings for a man who showed me so little respect” you can tell that those words cut him deep by his immediate reaction. His mouth clamps shut, he swallows hard, and you can see the incredible pain in his eyes. I think those words are confirmation to him that he hurts everything he loves and is not worthy of CH. So even though she leaves him with an opening when she says “I can’t be your governess, IF THAT IS WHAT YOU CAME HERE TO ASK” he can’t take the opening anymore because his worst fears have just been confirmed. I think In S3 we will see a Colbourne who is trying to live the way he thinks CH would want him to in regards to the girls and that even though he has no chance with her because of her “engagement” he will take some big behind the scenes actions to show that he respects her. I think he is going to get his brother Sam Colbourne to help Georgiana secure her inheritance and to do it in such a way that it would remain hers even if she marries (that way she knows any man interested in her is in it for her alone. I’m also guessing that either Otis returns or Sam Colbourne becomes a love interest for Georgiana). I think that AC and CH will have many encounters, but that while she’s engaged to Ralph, AC will never voice his feelings for her but will definitely show in his actions and behavior that her influence and words have changed him profoundly. Then, whenever and however the engagement dissolves (because we all know it will), AC will finally have the eloquent speech he has never been able to manage and basically have his Darcy moment when he says “I did it all for you” and we get our HEA! I have no doubts that the HEA will happen, just dying to have to wait a year!
@Ruby-hg8vl
@Ruby-hg8vl 2 года назад
@@Mandyporter3 I agree with everything you said. I am hoping he’s a little more overt about his feelings for her early on though. I want him to be appropriate, but he needs to apologize convincingly, tell her how he feels, and show her he’s willing to fight for her. Otherwise, CH would have no reason to break her engagement. My other hopes for S3, that Sam Colbourne is a good guy, and he has a good relationship with AC. Maybe he can shed some light on the Colbourne family’s history for Charlotte. I do think AC will help Georgiana, maybe help Tom with Sanditon, perhaps funding Arthur’s theater?
@Mandyporter3
@Mandyporter3 2 года назад
@@Ruby-hg8vl Yes! I agree. I think he will apologize early on and even make an effort to be more open and communicative on a platonic level-more of the kindness and gentleness we have seen glimpses of-hopefully even some of the humor (I think AC really does have a great dry wit when he lets it out). I think there needs to be space for forgiving and coming to build that friendship again before they come back together romantically.
