Alexander decides to release Charlotte as the Heyrick House governess, feeling he had overstepped and taken advantage of her. Lennox has done precisely what he had hoped -- he's gotten under Alexander's skin and made him question himself. (S2:E6)

After scheming men like Tom, Lennox, Edward and Carter behave badly, the most damage is done by Alexander who behaves with misplaced gallantry.

Listening to his voice just now it seemed several times Mr. Colbourne was near tears, not just when he spoke to Mrs. Wheatley. As long as these two get back together and Charlotte has more time to think about it, it might occur to her that he had actually done a rather selfless thing. When they parted at the military encampment, the loving look on his face and the caress of her hand told me he was looking forward to pursuing a romance. It was only after Col. Lennox made him doubt himself that all the guilt and self-loathing came back with a vengeance. The fact that he loved her enough to deny himself the one thing he wanted most was actually an act of love, misguided as it was.
@ladyguenevere3501

Lisa... I so agree. And the thing that touched me the most about Colbourne is that he fought for love. In spite of his inner struggles, his self-condemnation and risking rejection..in the end.. he fought for her love. THAT is a beautiful thing...and courageous. ❤️‍🔥

She would’ve never thought they would have discussed her at all so she wouldn’t even think that Lennox had something to do with his sudden change of heart. The fact that Xander makes it seem like what they did was awful, implies that he only thinks of her as an employee, and then fires her just makes him look weak and indecisive. He knew Lennox’s words were not to be trusted and yet he let him get under his skin. There’s no one to blame but Xander. When he goes to ask her to come back he says the house misses her, that he’s not there of his own volition but because his niece begged him and that the children miss her. Never once did he apologize for what he said or even explaining why he said what he did but apologized for the “situation”. If anything, I think Charlotte took the high road when I think she had every right to yell at him.

When they reunite it better be Darcy/Lizzie levels of awkwardness with some Anne/Wentworth pining and a dash of Rochester-Jane angst and passion. It’ll probably come in phases but I’m here for it! Though no level of awkwardness can achieve the “they said you weren’t home so I decided to take a house tour of YOUR house which I would have lived in and been lady of had I accepted your marriage proposal. . .” awkward.

"We shall say..." No way dude. You should have discussed it with Charlotte and not made a unilateral decision. Maybe he really thought they would return to the breakfast table and tell the girls together. He was certainly not anticipating her fleeing the room. "What have I done?!" is clear on his face. The understatement of the season. Interpret THAT silence- AC, what were you Thinking?! (And even though I have rewatched this scene a few times, I still expect Charlotte to chime in with "Are you being serious?!" I read that clear on her face. I think she has made her feelings pretty clear, and his disregard for them really hurts...hurts them both. So sad.)

The scene with Mrs Wheatley breaks my heart. "It's better this way, for her sake" , he loves her so much but he's haunted by his past , whatever happened with his drunk father, his being beaten as a kid, his wife's betrayal. I'm glad he's made a step towards changing things for himself and the girls by leaving this house.

No matter the century, men hardly change. They think they’re impervious to psychological traumas and therefore deal with such things, either the worst, or at best, not in a good way. Charlotte had always directed him in the right path. All of them actually. She turned them into a real unity family. If ever in season 3 Colborne will not mention Charlotte just as he did his late wife I’m sure Augusta and Leo won’t allow it. Seriously! Isn’t just tired of always regretting and apologizing for his words / reactions😤? Do you think he left the house mainly because it would remind him of Charlotte to much….?
@Ruby-hg8vl

@@gerom2712 I imagine Augusta has been giving him hell. Mrs. Wheatly has been encouraging him to not become a recluse again. I do think he's leaving bc of Charlotte's influence. My hope is that he is leaving to exorcise some of his demons, knowing he can't heal in the house. Then he'll go back to Charlotte. He needs to decide that he doesn't want to live this way anymore and take steps to forgive himself for past traumas that aren't his fault. Then maybe he can fully open himself to Charlotte. Of course, he needs to do it fast since she is engaged now.

And I hope that it dawns on Charlotte too - that he changed after he went back to talk to Lennox! He needs to forgive himself, reset and determine to win Charlotte back! I also wonder if Charlotte has kept in touch with the girls, especially Augusta? She might even write about her engagement and pending matrimony!
@skiddledede8885
@skiddledede8885 2 года назад
I’m concerned that if he hears of C’s engagement, he will say “see I knew it was better this way”. And be crushed, turning inside again. Maybe the girls will speak up and say “you loved her and so did we”. C has opened a door that he cannot close now. The realization that he can love, can feel, can change. And he wants it. He just has to figure out how. Ben plays this part so beautifully. Is this a bit like the real him? He seems like a very introspective, kind man. Lucky woman. It’s amazing how we can make these characters into actual people in our head. It’s such a welcome respite from our scary, complicated world. I like staying here for awhile. I’m old. But I remember being young and unsure. The mistakes made. The heartache of shattered dreams. Of loving the wrong person, and the difficulty of letting bad things go so you can grasp the new thing that’s right. Guess this is my trip back in time?

Wow! So many twist and turns for Charlotte and Alexander they are definitely in love ❤ but Lennox final statement about lucy and Alex and Mrs Wheatley's conversation at the window indicates that there is one very important piece to this puzzle that has yet to be revealed in season 3 that will bring them together 💝
@marencleavinger2040

My theory about the missing puzzle piece is Alexander is an illegitimate child, possibly from a staff member. I don't think Alexander knew until after he inherited the house and got married. Guilt and shame made him withdraw from Lucy. She went to find comfort elsewhere, which adds another layer of guilt and shame.

As soon as he sees her there is dread on his face. How many times did Colbourne rehearse that speech in his head? Then he doesn't even give her a chance to speak. It's a speech not a conversation. And the look of his face when she's leaves the room! He puts on a mask for the speech and it spills as she departs. It caught my attention that he made the decision without her. While I think both actors did a great job in acting this scene; I found the whole concept of it to have very modern sensibilities, not early 19th century at all. I have had two ancestors whose wives died young, one left with three children under 12 who married his housekeeper, the other had ten children (nine girls) and married his wife's nurse. (One was a good choice, one was bad.) Considering the inequality of power in romance wasn't "a thing" until recent decades. Throughout history men and women have routinely increased their social position by marrying up. The only reason that the writers had to separate these two sweethearts is because the series was renewed for two seasons instead of just one. Then for Charlotte to be so unkind to Mr. Colbourne when he came to apologize and admit his mistake seemed out of character for someone who has always been so sweet. I never saw her eyes look so hard or so cold. When you consider how rude and condescending Sidney was for most of their relationship, I wonder how Charlotte could forgive him and not Mr. Colbourne. At least Mr. Colbourne's mistake, misguided as it was, was inspired by his desire to protect her.
@ladyguenevere3501

I know what you mean but then I thought...this was the second time she'd been hurt like this..just cut off .. so even though he came to apologize I felt her reaction may have been because of this. She even says "enough" as she starts to sob. I really didn't like Sydney's character in season one. To me he was just too mean and disrespectful and I think the only reason Charlotte may have taken it and forgiven was she was young and naive at that point. By the time she met Colbourne she was older and more seasoned and had known heartbreak. What an emotional rollercoaster! Thank God for the joyous ending when love wins! 💖

@@rexannaswanson6880 Yes he really does but I must say I was surprised to hear Lennox admit that it was clear to him that Charlotte was in love with Colbourne. Something I read makes me believe Lennox will not be there n season 3. Also, I think Charlotte rejected Colbourne because he only asked her to return as governess and indicated it was for the sake of the girls not because he loved her. That’s my take on it.

I knew this convo was coming, but when he shut the door to the study...arg! NEVER a good sign. Then the comment about their positions. He hits all the buttons for her to be offended. Doesn't answer her questions (such immobilizing fear on his part!) I remember Ben's comment about how Colbourne's big feelings for her make it difficult to be articulate about his thoughts and feelings. She has a tongue-tying effect on him. (Not to mention his fears and regret of the past that are thwarting the future-just like she said!) I totally get why this happened, but I still hate it!

Also interesting to note when Lennox forced that kiss on Charlotte at the ball he brought up her "place" like she was beneath him. Colbourne did the same, granted he was trying to be honorable but I think it seriously triggered Charlotte who is keenly conscious of Colbourne's rank and immense wealth that was hinted at early in the season. Everything he said to her was the like the Pride and Prejudice speech and I don't blame Charlotte for shutting down. I just hope Colbourne realizes what he's done in trying to "protect" her. Some comment above was spot on with all the schemes and downright degrees of evil with Lennox, Carter, Edward, sadly Charles and even Tom to some extent the worst damage in done by Alexander. Such Irony and I think great writing.

I Thwart You, You Thwart Me: This show is magnificent, but in S2E6’s Banish Charlotte scene, AC’s pretense jerked me right out of Planet Sanditon. AC’s Jekyll & Hyde switch from a Better Father in cheerful banter with the children about a new dog to The Boss telling the woman he knows he loves to hit the road and don’t come back was, well…blech! Justin, there had to be a better way to achieve the necessary season-ending lovers’ rift without sacrificing his integrity. Trust is a hard thing for a betrayed person to get back. AC had never been deceptive or cruel to CH before, and even for a man in battle with his emotions and frightened he might do her wrong, it did not ring true. But it’s too late for redemption because The Boss has already cut her out of all the photographs. With the exception of AM’s subsequent superb takedown of AC at the stables and The Two Comedians’ Wedding, the episode’s previously natural flow was lost. A Season 4 and 5 would go a long way to remedy this offense (double hoping!).

Every time I'm upset with him for how cruel he was in that dismissal, I try to remember that the more cruel he is, the more he loves her. If he is to protect her from himself, he must send her away with no reservations, no second thoughts. She mustn't see even the tiniest crack in his armor. I don't know I did a WTF with this twist but not in a way that's devastating in a head scratch way, it didn't make sense for me. It's a funny thing with fiction, it still is required to be believable and something wasn't about that, the particles didn't settle in the way a tragedy should. I presume they will end up together but he is an idiot. Sorry but “Jerk “. I now understand why she does what she does next. Because at this point, you would not marry for love after being hurt twice. So she is being practical. I hope Colburne comes to his senses quick next season and stops her. It's important to understand Alexander to know that he has believed he's toxic to relationships. He still feels deep guilt about the way he reacted to Lucy's pregnancy, and that he should have been kinder to her. And then, for her to walk out into the rain and basically commit suicide -- his guilt has consumed him for 9 years. Then Lennox pushes every button he has and tells him that a relationship with Charlotte won't be any different. He'll just end up hurting her too. The key is what Alex says to Mrs. W. -- "this will be better for her." This is a selfless act, and it's killing him to do it. All will be well. They will be together in S3. This is only the halfway point of their story. ❤️
