As I'm sure you've seen in other comments, Netflix adapted the manga where Zeff ate his own leg to survive. The anime censored it, which is funny because they kept the "reveal" shot of Zeff sitting there without a foot after Sanji discovered he didn't have any food, even though now it doesn't really make any sense.

The official record without solid food is 382 days, but the guy did have sugary drinks. The estimated range without that is 50-70 days. In the manga, Sanji went after Zeff on the 70th day. And as many have commented, Netflix used the canon manga version, it was only the anime that censored Zeff eating his leg.

I am a Spanish speaker and that was the best and funniest intro. One Piece translated to Spanish it say "una pieza" and "I am Monkey D. Luffy and I going to be the King of the pirates" It would be "soy Monkey D. Luffy y yo seré el rey de los piratas. You should try it in your next One Piece intro. I love you guys. Ghin throwing the gas mask was meant to be a punishment to himself for not only disobeying Don Krieg but for the fact that he has succumbed to his emotions/feelings, in his case to the feeling of empathy and pity toward his enemy. Before Sanji fed him, Ghin was a cold blooded and ruthless monster and the whole premise of Don Krieg’s crew is to not showcase pity or empathy toward their enemies and to take any measures in defeating their enemy no matter how dirty/cheap they may be. So basically, when Ghin threw his gas mask into the water he wasn’t preoccupied with Sanji’s life, he was more preoccupied with how much disloyal he was toward Don Krieg and the whole crew by showing any sign of mercy toward their enemy which is Sanji, so the right punishment to himself was more important than Sanji’s life. I know that Ghin might seem too confused and all over the place of a character but this only makes him human cuz we humans are very complex beings in general. This is only proof of Oda’s great writing by not writing too much of one dimensional characters

You can last up to three weeks without any food as long as you have water. But in the real world going without food for so long like that does have a permanent effect on a person's health. I don't think they're ever going to show Sanji having heart problems or osteoporosis. I just accepted as fact that the people inhabiting the world of One Piece are just way more physically resilient than an earth human. You can do all sorts of impossible things with pure willpower in this world.

11:05 I'm sure a billion people have already said it, but the live-action version where Zeff eats his own leg is the actual thing that happens in the manga. They only changed it in the anime because they thought that would be too intense for viewers or something.

In the anime, aside from changing how Zeff lost his leg, they shortened the amount of time they were on that rock since Zeff didn't eat anything here. Though in reality eating your own leg would be worse than going without food for days, but well, when it comes to surviving terrible attacks and healing OP isn't exactly realistic in general lol

was probably mentioned many times before but the original/canon is that Zeff ate his leg. It was done this way cuz it was considered too dark for tv at the time or something like that. The maga has him eating his foot

People can survive without food for about a month or so. Zeff gave his food to Sanji in the manga and ate his leg. If he kept his leg and ate it over some time , it should be feasible.

one thing to note is that the Live Action adapted the manga of one piece, not the anime. So Zeff eating his leg is faithful to the source material whereas the anime takes liberties in order to censor

The netflix version of Sanji's backstory with Zeff followed the canon version of the Manga (Author GOda) the anime version made it less brutal for kids who will watch.

He ate his leg guys, Netflix did not make it up, in the manga he actually did but they didnt show it here in the anime, they though it was too much.

After 2 weeks without food your body starts to get really harmed, and so the consequences are unpredictable and depends each person. But the record registered is more than 50 days of someone who effectively survived after recover. But after a month death can happen. And about Zeff eating his own leg in manga (and live action), yes was because of TV age sensorship in Japan.

There's a lot more to the characters backstories that hasn't been exposed yet in the first hundred episodes, more surprises will come about their past in much later episodes

I'm from Chile. Spanish is my native language. The One Piece would be translated like "Una pieza" o "Un pedazo", but the latin spanish dub keep the original name so it's just called One Piece.

If i'm not wrong, u can survive something like 90 days, average, without food. But there is a lot of points that could kill u before for bad nutrition and it also changes depending on the person

The anime bit different from manga, it's scarier because Zeff didn't lose the leg to save Sanji, he ate it in order to live.

While the anime is generally closer to the manga then the live action when it comes to censorship the anime does a lot more of it. A lot of us are hoping that the anime remake will address the censorship issues since it's coming to streaming instead of broadcast television.

What is unrealistic, is that Zeff would have probably gone into shock and died if he tried to use a rock to saw off his own leg. It's just different versions of one piece showcasing strength of will. Personally, I like the anime version where he sacrifices his leg to save Sanji from drowning, and then just surviving on no food and sheer will.

First off stop comparing the live action to the anime, second in the manga he did eat his foot but for obvious reasons, the anime could not depict that so it just him on no foot.

In the Manga, Zeff eats his own leg. But it's too cruel. In the anime it was changed to have the leg amputated. LA follow the Manga.

Humans can live without food and drinks for 21 days....but it goes up depends on how healthy the person is and depends on his surroundings and depends on many factors....maximum possible days is 2 months...sceintifically

There are to big censorships at the beggining of the One Piece anime. The first is omiting Luffy as a kid stabbing himself (producers didn't wanted that the first thing kids saw was the protagonist stabbing a knife in its own face) and the second is Zeff eating his own leg to keep hunger at bay (so they invented a new way for him to lose a leg to save Sanji). In the manga Zeff jumps overboard and rescue Sanji from drowning and the both end wash away like the version you know.
