The overwatering thing is so true!! I killed two lovely sansevierias this past year by not paying attention. Now I write on the calendar when I have watered, then wait two weeks and water lightly!

Hi enjoyed your video. I bottom watered along, allowing the plant to take in the water and then make sure I drain off any access before returning it to its original placement. Would you say that is a good way of watering this particular plant thank you.

It might be alright, I would not water it that way if you’re reusing water that you’ve watered other plants with, as that can spread soil diseases/pests if they are ever brought in (exp a new plant, or even existing plant). I also find it easier not to over water if you give it measured amounts of water, even if that’s just eye balling it. Better to under water a bit than over water Sansevieria. If the water runs over that sides of the root ball when you water, it may be too root bound. There are a lot of factors that influence plant health though (example, light, temperature, soil type, etc). If you’ve had your plant for a while and it’s thriving, it must like the way you’re watering it. Make sure to feed it a mild fertilizer once in a while. When it comes time to repot it in the future, make sure to never use soil that has been sitting outside on real soil (the ground), and let the soil around the plants roots dry before repotting/cutting into roots, use a good quality potting soil made for indoor plants. Sansevieria can get a bacterial infection that doesn’t go away if they ever get it, so I’m really careful about repotting then when the roots are dry (not wet), tools are clean, new soil is fresh and made for indoor plants. I hope this helps for success with your Sansevieria🌿

How old is your whalefin, Jason? Or how long have u had it? It's so tall! I wish mine would be as tall. I think yours can get to the maximum height 5ft!

@JasonsGreenSleeves 4 года назад
Hi MyLovelyMocha! I've had my whale fin about a year! I'm sure it's much older due to its size🙂! So far it's put out the one new taller leaf; I think you're right! I think it will reach 5ft+ at some point! 💚! Just take good care of yours and maybe it will reach that size too👍🙏🙂!

Wow That's about the biggest one i ever saw. How old is it?
@JasonsGreenSleeves
@JasonsGreenSleeves 4 года назад
Thank you Sombath:-)! I've had it for about a year and a half; I'm not exactly sure how old it is, but the one leaf that is separate from the two that parallel, was a little sprout about an inch tall when I got the plant about a year and a half ago. It did help that this was an already established plant when purchased. Since it's relatively slow growing; I'd guess about 4 years ish. If you buy this plant; I'd most definitely recommend buying a larger plant as it's not the quickest grower. I think it does grow faster when you already have a larger plant to begin with. Hope this helps and thank you for the feedback:-)!

What size is your decorative pot? So I know what size pot to look for.
@JasonsGreenSleeves
@JasonsGreenSleeves Год назад
If your plant is on a 2-3 gallon plastic pot, I think a good size decorative pot for that would be a 5 gallon:-).

I have a problem with this one :( i put in direct sunlight in the window and it shriveled and it was getting a baby, and the baby is dry too :( will it go back to normal? I watered it a good bit, so the water went through the bottom.

Thank you for sharing! If the plant is dead, my suggestion won't affect it, however; if there is any life left, there is a chance to revive it. One of the most common ways plants die, is when they are overwatered, especially after drying out. A good rule of 'sleeve' (hehe thumb), is to not water again until the soil has completely dried again for Sansevieria. I would only wanter very little as far as quantity (maybe 1/4 cup, as it sounds like the leaves are gone now. Keep plant in bright indirect light. Plants have roots and on the roots are root hairs; the root hairs have the most efficient water absorbing ability. Root hairs can diminish or die from over watering or under watering (Sansevieria.. mostly due to over watering.. unless sunburned to ground). Regenerating those root hairs takes time, maybe a month or two at least. Allowing the soil to dry allows air space in soil for root hairs to regenerate. A good indicator of the root hairs regenerating is when the soil begins drying at a quicker rate between watering. If the soil stays wet, don't water until it drys. If your plant was in a large pot, like a 3 gallon or larger, maybe try adding an edible bean seed if the soil is completely saturated. It sounds funny to add a bean seed, but what that does, is it helps draw out water where your injured plant is not doing the same, preventing it from staying waterlogged... beans sprout and grow relatively fast. Once the bean plant is larger, feel free to remove it and give the plant room to regenerate on its own. This is a very effective way of reviving plants; it doesn't always work, if severe rot, pests or other diseases have set in though. It's a very effective method at giving your plant a fighting chance👍🙂! I hope this helps🌿.

@@JasonsGreenSleeves but it turned that was by standing indirect sunlight. I think it was too much sun for it and it shriveled. i just watered it once and will wait till it puffs out again :)
@JasonsGreenSleeves
@JasonsGreenSleeves 4 года назад
Agreed, it sounds like it burnt, they want bright indirect light, even a little sun is ok, prolly too much sun. Best of wishes reviving it👍🌿!

Where would you purchase a plant like this ? I’ve only seen small ones for $100 or so
@JasonsGreenSleeves
@JasonsGreenSleeves 4 года назад
Hi Wendy! I totally feel you in this search! It took me years to find a nice large healthy one and it was still more expensive than other Sansevieria. It's a more rare variety and it's slow growing; so whoever grows it, can end up spend a lot of time (labor) in caring for it to the size that the plant is ready to sell. The best deals I've seen are at Orchard Nursery in Lafayette, CA; so if you live in the area, you can call them to see if they have it or inquire about ordering one from them for the next time they place an order for that plant. If you don't live in the are, a quick online search yielded this company: gardengoodsdirect.com/products/snake-plant-shark-fin?variant=22677415624768&Google%20Shopping I've never ordered from this company, but hope this helps! Best wishes in your search!

Oh! I've been to this nursery in Oregon and I believe they can mail this to you. They provide high quality plants too and I believe they can mail this plant to you once they have it in stock again. I recommend contacting them, if you don't live in Northern California. They are called Pistils Nursery:pistilsnursery.com/products/sansevieria-masoniana-whale-fin
