Santa's Switch Adapted Toys- Special needs children
A much easier way to add switch plugs to the Sloth, soldering at already identified locations while being able to keep the factory buttons functional.

@@traceyhughes1633 the speaker wire may be broken. Do you feel comfortable taking the bottom off and seeing if that has happened? It might be easy to fix. Where did you get the toy?

Thank you so much for the videos! They have been super helpful for adapting toys for my pediatric patients! By chance, have you had to adapt the moose for this set? I had a family purchase one from a company and when the switch is activated it only produces the sound “Moose!” And then stops. However, when you press the button on its belly it will sing. Hope to hear from you soon!

Thank you Trent. I haven't found a way to open up the moose for adapting. The switch I would need access to is inside the hard shell and I believe that is glued together. While I have heard of it being adapted, I gave up trying to do it myself. Sorry

Thank you for this video. I tried and tried to follow another where the soldering was on the circuit board and I couldn't get the solder to hold. Within a few minutes, following your suggestions I got it all soldered up and working (almost). I think I may have damaged the left side what I was working on the circuit board since neither the factory button or the adapter work on that side. I wish I would have found your video before!!!! Nice job and THANKS!

Thank you Wayne. Glad you were able to save some function of the toy. Let's see if you can get it to fully function with your switches. Probably going to need to abandon using the factory switches, but you may be able to still use your adaptive switch. May I suggest that you try to remove as much of the solder you applied from on or around the non-working PCB switch? Even if it means damaging that area beyond use. Let's see if that is what is preventing that side from working. Sometimes if the circuit is closed, which can occur if the contacts are even minutely touching (easy to do trying to solder those zig-zags) then the CPU never sees it open, and ignores any attempt to activate it. These boards are pretty sturdy, so if you can free up that printed circuit switch, then maybe your added-in adaptive switch will activate. Best thing I see here though is you are wiser now as to what to look for on your next adaption. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance. Willing to Zoom a chat session to assist. @@TheLaserguy2 Thanks "Santa" (Jerry)! Much appreciated! I've tried to clean up the area as best I can. What surprises me is that the switch doesn't work on that side but works perfectly on the other which also works with the factory button. I've carefully, very, very carefully used both a fine dental pick as well as a gentle wipe of steel wool. The cable is red, white black wires and I've found that white/black with red as a single is best. I've successfully done 5 or 6 toys for our grandson so far but this one is my first head scratcher. I was encouraged by adapting a remote controlled fart machine without instruction just before this so maybe I had a false sense of "I can do this". I have about 5 more on my Pop-Pops to-do list. It's my "Santa" moment for Oscar who has had many of his toys for over 2 years but was mainly an observer and I wanted to see him be a participant. Thanks again!

@@waynesmith4655 You're doing great! Keep in mind that manufacturers of those cable don't stay consistent with colored wires. All from same supplier, I went through hundreds reliably with red as tip, combine the other two, white/black, white/yellow, white/blue, yellow/blue, as sleeve/ring, then suddenly had issues. Discovered the last few hundred are white tip, yellow/red combine for sleeve/ring. Now I test every single one, both for the switch and the toy, during production. Made and posted this not so short video which explains how I determine the wire colors in a stereo cable to combine to make it a mono. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WT73URIq3Zo.html In case you're wondering, I can buy a usable 6' extension cables for about 80 cents each. Just snip off the female end for toys, and use the male end for switches. Economical way to adapt all the toys and switches Santa has made available at affordable prices. Another tip is to use a flux or rosin core solder when soldering to the circuit board integrated zig-zag switch. I scratch the surface a bit before soldering, then add a dab of solder to the board, then bring the wire, pre-tinned, to make the final connection. That way you are only heating up an already prepared dab of solder, not the board, making it a quick connection. After removing the soldering iron, always hold the wire steady until the solder cools. You can visibly see it go from liquid shiny to suddenly lead dull. Otherwise the connection is prone to fail.

Here is what and where I buy the cables in bulk. Used to be $0.69 each but price has increased. Gives me a length for the toy and a length for a switch. www.cnaweb.com/6-ft-3-5mm-stereo-extension-cable.aspx

For the adapting needed for the sloth, I don't need to take any more apart then shown. I adapt toys so people with special needs and limited mobility can interact with them. Done hundreds of the Fisher Price as they are a popularly requested item.
