Ah, it's always this SANYO fan that has fascinated me since I was little. It has a chrome badge with textures, a soothing white noise, detailed-deluxe body stickers, and a really luxurious combination the boxy blue blade and silver grille!
Here is my SANYO model EF-J16 GKK that I bought from Facebook marketplace last January 2024. The seller stated that this fan still in "new" condition but without its box and manual book. Well, I had already guessed, that even though it was said to be “new”, there would definitely be signs of use such as dust on the inside of the motor, blade, and grill. When this fan arrived at home, my guess turned out to be correct. But that doesn't really bother me because look at its condition! Very pristine, like new, and almost perfect for a 40 years old fan. It's just that, when I tried it at the beginning, the oscillation sometimes worked and sometimes didn't work. However, I was too lazy to contact the seller again because I thought I could fix it myself.
The next day, I polished this fan by cleaning all its parts and at the same time trying to fix the fan oscillation gear, but unfortunately, it was really a challenging thing to fix this thing and the oscillation spring was that hard to get the metal bead in the original place, in fact now the fan couldn't oscillate at all 🤣 But no worries, later I can take it to a fan service place.
As for the material, there's no need to doubt it. The back of the fan body is made of heavy iron, and the front body is made of hard & heavy plastic to accommodate the heavy weight of its grill set & blade. In my opinion, this Sanyo plastic blade is the heaviest plastic blade I have ever encountered. Uniquely, in the motor section, the fan motor tends to be one with the gearbox, where the entire motor housing is made of heavy iron.
As you can see, this fan still uses dual voltage, which is my assumption that this fan was produced in the mid-80s. For a wall fan, this fan has the longest power cable I have ever encountered, around 3 meters. Then, there are two fabric pull chains for power/speed and oscillation. Because the oscillation can't work yet, I use the 3-way oscillation feature to direct the fan head.
Even though the blades are quite heavy, when turned on, this old air mover is pretty powerful and I'm not surprised because when I was little, I often encountered similar SANYO oscillating fans that could blow anything around them when turned on.
Also don't forget about its calming white noise when operated.
Originally, I planned to use this fan as a daily driver in my living room as a wall air circulator and fan display to show off to the guest, but due to the broken oscillation, I was not really comfortable when using this fan, because the wind was too strong to direct it to just one spot.
