The weirdest thing about that rape scene is there is already a perfectly valid loophole for Eugene to break his code: Seeing someone being taken for away for breaking the taboo index. It would parallel his inaction when Alice was taken nicely showing how he’s grown from that powerless little kid, and wouldn’t break the world building. Heck if you REALLY wanted to add a sexual assault scene, just have the bully forcefully kiss the girl and the system can’t separate the victim and the perpetrator and is going to take both away. It’s not too traumatic, actually comments on how rape or sexual assault victims are often labeled as “being at fault themselves” and how fucked up that is, and doesn’t break the rules of the world.

Geoff experienced more character growth in the first 2 minutes of this video than every character in SAO put together ever did.

That explanation about AIs basically means that Yui has been retconned as an unfeeling robot that only does things because she's programmed to. Yay.

I think what enrages me most about the sexual assault stuff is how it's ALWAYS used so that a man can be virtuous and save women from assault...That's it. Women and their trauma are used as props. And I have to say, fantasizing about an innocent woman being sexually abused so that you (or your self-insert protagonist) can save her has to be one of the most disgusting hero fantasies to have.

It's awesome that Reki apologized to the voice actresses on Twitter instead of, like, asking the anime writers to cut that scene, or to rewrite it to something else.

The rape scene is pretty awful, the one nugget I like from the whole interaction is Tiese wiping Eugeo’s eye-blood. To me it feels like a wordlessly powerful interaction between two broken people, as opposed to the “hooray we’re together now” ending of SAO alfheim

The idea of AIs organically discovering how to manipulate their own universe using its existing code while also accepting that as just another part of the natural laws of their world is honestly really interesting. (I guess this is what algorithms and machine learning basically are already, minus "sentience" in the way we understand that word). There are some genuinely good ideas going on in SAO, it's just a shame the execution is so clumsy and half-baked.

As Eugeo being my favorite character in SAO it was absolutely infuriating how needless his death was and it is really refreshing that someone points this out they could have done so much with his character and one of best thing that came out of this season was cut short for shock value

I really like SAO (sans majority of fairy dance) but really do have to agree with your criticisms. My perspective when watching your videos is 'I really enjoyed it, but I could be enjoying it so much more if they fixed those things.'

I gotta commend you, Geoff. Considering the amount of SA contained throughout SAO as a whole, let alone the amount contained in Alicization, you gave Kawahara infinitely more respect than he deserves, as a person & writer.

Cardinal just giving up really ticked me off. She herself said that she could halve Quinella’s HP by herself WHILE holding off the Gollum, so why surrender with 3 of the best swordsmen in the realm giving support? Also, why would Quinella ever honor her agreement with Cardinal to spare the kids when there is no one to enforce it? She easily could and would just kill them after killing her, so why trust her? Likewise, Cardinal was willing to mercy delete the entire world, but drew the line at killing a gollum made of tortured souls? So dumb, but somehow, I still enjoy it lol.

At least you gotta admire the level of detail that went into the villainess's costume.

I honestly loved the cast of Alicization. They felt more real than the previous casts and I ended up really liking Eugeo and Alice because even though she was basically a puppet at the beginning, she found the strength to disobey the pontifex

Listening to you and other people dunk on basically every part of SAO has really made me realize just how much I had to turn the brain off to enjoy the anime as much as I did. I am grateful for the criticism that made me realize how bad the writing and (most) ideas of SAO really are but at the same time I have to somehow reconcile the love I had for it. It was the first anime I watched so long ago and I actually really liked season 1 (I mean it when I said I REALLY had to turn the brain off, I mean I don't even know how I tolerated Alfheim and all its bullshit) and Mother's Rosario. I think I still somehow like Kirito and Asuna and am hoping for something reasonable and meaningful that I can cling onto in Progressive, but it's been eye opening to find out just how much nonsense and power-of-friendship/love bullshit is pumped into almost all plots and side plots of SAO. Not to even mention how Reki seemed unable to leave uncomfortable or inappropriate scenes out of the story (if you are reading this now and watched the rest of Alicization, you'll know that this somehow gets EVEN WORSE in the second part. Like Jesus Christ that scene with Leafa actually made me wanna vomit). Well that's it for my rant. Yay for my character development in knowing bad writing when I see it and here's hoping for better from Reki from now on because I do want to see SAO become something better than it is.

You can tell Geoff is a good writer because the first sentence of this episode is not only hilarious but also makes his stance on SAO abundantly clear, setting up the perfect tone.
