Just tried this for the first time last Sunday, my wife's grandmother introduced these to me. The problem was the name she gave me for it was non-exist outside of her house. I just left your website and came here to learn a little more about it. Thank you for the time spent in making this video.

@Jessiele2003 Thanks for viewing our video! Yes, you are right - there are many ways to eat a sapodilla, and I wish we could show them all! This method is an easy and quick way for newcomers to open up and eat Florida sapodillas. Thanks for your comment!

The sapodilla is one of the sweetest tropical fruits. It does taste like a pear soaked in brown sugar. My parents had two big trees but they never produced. I finally took them out. They were probably seedlings. On hindsight, I wish I would have grafted them. Thinking about buying a grafted tree, but concerned about its large size. Same concern with jackfruit, lychee, mamey, etc.....

I grew up eating Sapodillas in the Philippines, where they call them Chicos. Sadly, I can't find any in New York City, where I currently live.

We grow many cultivars here in south Florida: Alano, Morena, OX, Hasya, etc. That one that Julian is handling in the grove looks to be one of the OX cultivars, as well as the fruit that Louise is cutting open.

Yes, sapodillas are sometimes called "sapote", and from your description, it sounds like you have purchased sapodillas! You are correct, let they ripen on the kitchen counter until they give a little, like a ripe peach, and ENJOY!!!

I have one & it is flowering now. I notice that the flowers don't open up to much. My question is, do I need to pollinate it or does it self pollinate? I want to ensure that I get some fruit. Is the Canistel the same? I notice their flowers don't open either.

The grocers in Miami know of these fruits, especially in the south part of the County. You can find these trees in the nurseries listed on our website at tropicalfruitgrowers (dot)com. Go to the 'Nurseries" page to find a nursery. Don't give up - those delicious fruits are still here! TFGSF

Julian mentioned that another name for a Sapodilla is Sapote. I just bought several yesterday that were labeled Sapote at the store. They look like small brown potatoes. I suspect these are actually Sapodillas? They are still hard so it will be a few days before I can taste one. Thanks!

Hi! To purchase sapodilla in Virginia, I would first try area specialty markets, Asian, Indian, or Latin where this fruit is well known. You could also ask the produce manager of your local grocery store to order sapodilla, OR, you can go to our website, click on the photo of a sapodilla, and contact one of the growers listed on the sapodilla page. Enjoy! TFGSF

Our sapodilla flowers endlessly but it literally only produces only 2 or 3 fruits out of a myriad of flowers in its branches. There is a nearby Sapodilla Tree that does not have any problem bearing fruit. Any advice?

Yes. According to Julia Morton's book, Biriba has been grown here in south Florida, but with limited success. Appears to be a lot of pests.

I grew up in Miami eating this fruit along with Chinese plums, Tamarind and Kumquats. Now as an adult, when I go to the local grocer and ask for them, they look at me as if i am speaking a foreign language they have never heard of. Theses fruit trees were once plentiful around the neighborhood but now they seem to have disappeared. Please let me know where I can find them. Thanks.

Can different sapodilla/sapote (mamey, black/chocolate, yellow) be grafted into one tree and perform well?
@lolshatter
@lolshatter 10 лет назад
black sapote is actually a persimmon variety
@TropicalFruitGrowers
@TropicalFruitGrowers 9 лет назад
No, those trees you mention are from different genuses and so cannot be grafted onto one another. Grafted plants need to be from the same genus to have a chance of success.
