I was an average German 12 years old when the original musical came to Munich. During this scene I raised my arm just in the middle of the audience and started singing "freedom is coming tomorrow" with the cast, crying. The whole musical was so powerful, I feel like watching it changed my life. It made me understand the power of dancing and the suffering of the people in South Africa. The film is well made and I like it, but the energy I felt being in the same room with the performers can't be brought onto the screen. I remember when Apartheid was abolished and Mandela was elected, I celebrated, even though my only connection to South Africa was having seen the musical 2 years before.
This movie will forever have a place in my heart. As kids my sister and I use to pretend we either were Sarafina or were dancing with sarafina. This was the movie that could illustrate to us what our parent always use to tell us of what they went through back then.
