Sarah Blaffer Hrdy presents a new vision of human evolution and to argue that our capacity to understand, engage and empathise with each other stems from our status as a cooperatively parenting species.

26:45 Host: Why do you think it is that people adhered for so long, and still want to adhere to a view which is that human beings are basically nasty, and if they’re nice it’s only nice to be more effectively nasty? Sarah: “It’s amazing how certain people are. You know, we do have data for the last 15,000 years of warfare but none of it goes back earlier. A man named Doug Fry, in Finland, has written a very interesting book published by Oxford (“Beyond War: The Human Potential for Peace) I forget what it’s called. It’s sandwiched, beginning and end it’s kind of peacenik, but the middle it’s a wonderful review of ethnography, and it’s ethnography consistent also with my reading of the anthropological literature, which is, in small band, mobile hunter-gatherers, living at low population densities, groups almost never engage in socially organized warfare. This is not to say there’s not conspecific killing, sexual jealousy, male/ male combat, infanticide. These things happen. Socially organized, you don’t find that kind of warfare until you get complex hunter-gatherer societies, larger often sort of settling down near a rich resource like in Northwest America, on the Northwest Coast. Certainly with the Neolithic Revolution, with agriculture, with herding. You have resources where it’s valuable, where it serves your interest to compete for them and to protect them. Then you start to get this kind of fighting.

yay for the alloparentals ! 'allo in there ... ? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oq51a-wyPnw.html I'm old, retired, and don't have kids - but loved volunteering for 5 years with after-school childcare and the vicarious transcendental joy of kids - even tho' I haven't been there for 3 years since COVID stopped that, the other day I saw my favourite mother who stopped to talk with me in the street with her 3 girls now 9, 12 and 15yo - all smiling at me and enjoying sharing time together as I enjoyed with them before - just lovely.
