She is one of the most complete singers I have ever heard. Her breath control is amazing. Rivals Streisand's breath control. Her runs are just so fluid and extraordinary. Have been a fan of hers forever ( I'm 66). Body and Soul is a signature song as I believe she was discovered at the Apollo Theatre singing that song by Count Basie I believe. A recording to invest in is a later one called "How Long Is This Going On". And even though she kept touring and doing live performances, her voice got deeper and richer as she aged. She is absolutely brilliant.

@@peppersleeves7632 Sarah Vaughn is one of my favorite all time singers. I have known since I was a child (and am now 66) that she was a once in a lifetime type of talent. But I, and most everyone else, know that Streisand is more than just a good singer. I have an open mind, listen to almost every genre of music, and can realize that more than one singer is divine. We have differing opinions and can leave it at that.

I heard Sarah Vaughan in a concert in 1971. One of the songs she sang was George Gershwin's "Summertime; right at the last note at the very end she put down the microphone and hit a high note (must have been a high Bflat) and held it out. I was sitting in the second balcony and that voice filled the entire hall. I'll never forget that experience. If she wanted to, she could have become an operatic soprano. Rest in peace.

I had the absolute privilege to see her when I was in college in Pittsburgh. She had the count Basie big band. He barely made to the stage, however once he sat down it was AWESOME! Sarah was incredible. I also saw her in Philly many years later with either a quintet or quartet...results were the same. Love her

Kassi, you are a charming, elegant fellow, too. I agree with Jordan Briley that Sarah Vaughan's rendering of " Send in the clowns" is simply amazing , and you can find different performances of the song which she gave on different occasions. Her breath control, amongst other technical features which she mastered, has led many opera singers to study her performances. Another interesting aspect to Sarah Vaughan's legendary career is that as she grew older her voice gained nuances of tone and interpretation which can only remind us of a sophisticated, aged red wine from France or Argentina. Thank you!

Well done! As I noted in my comment to Ella's "Summertime," she and Billie are the only vocal rivals to Ella. Sarah (the Divine Sarah) recorded as much as Ella, and her musicianship is every bit as skillful all her life. But she expanded the range and the stylistic qualities of her voice in a way that Ella did not. Sarah had all that operatic control in a moderately big voice starting from when she was young, but her younger days were marked by more of a daddy's-girl type of personality she brought to her songs. By her middle period, though, she was applying her piano technique to her singing -- and her voice actually opened up and became richer, stronger, deeper, more powerful. By the time she was in her fifties, her voice was somewhere into a five or six octave range, and she was learning to sing quite startlingly well all the way down into a natural baritone! Few other women accomplished that, let alone with such remarkable control over pitch and timbre. She also went off into a brilliant round of Brazilian songs later in life that involved learning a new language and a whole new way of singing. Just remarkable. If there is one song more than any other you must hear, that would be from both studio and live, "Send in the Clowns." It sums up her mastery.

I agree with your praise but Sarah never had a five octave range. At best it was probably three and a half octaves which is still impressive!

Thank you for this video. Its like me looking in a mirror to back in '76 in Boston and bringing home my first S.V. album at age 13. By age 16 I scoured all the thrift stores in Boston and compiled 103 Sarah Vaughn records. There is a record i want to draw your attention to. Count Basie and S.V. were recording together but for what ever Union rule... Sarah released her next record with Count Basie's band but he wasnt allowed to record on it. Look for No Count Sarah (hehe thats the real name of it) and listen to Deep Purple!

Your respect for "the great one" is wonderful to watch. // You probably already know the CD of Sarah's Gershwin concert with the LA Philharmonic (Michael Tilson Thomas). It's one of my favorites, especially the encore "Foggy Day (in London Town)." Her interaction with the audience at the beginning is hilarious. She really was a great entertainer. And at the end of this song there is the tumultuous ovation. How they loved here. It always makes me smile.

Sarah Vaughan is in my top 3 of female jazz vocalists. She, like Ella Fitzgerald, were often referred to as instrumentalists--and their voices were their instrument. You asked for some favorite recordings of Sarah Vaughan--two very different recordings that showcased both her talent and her versatility. First, is her 1960 recording of "Star Eyes," with the full orchestra conducted by Jimmy Jones. She shows her emotion and vocal range in this one. Second, is her 1962 recording of "Key Largo" with only Barney Kessel on guitar and Joe Comfort on bass. Especially tasty is the chorus she sings with only the bass accompanying--her voice front and center.

Wandered over after you responded to my comment on your Ella reaction today. Glad you mentioned you'd reacted to Vaughan. Excellent reaction. I agree totally. The funny thing is, cool jazz is REALLY not my preferred music. At all. But Vaughan is so . . .arresting. Her voice has literally stopped me in my tracks when I've heard it in passing. Several times I've heard a song I was unfamiliar with, not knowing who was singing, " OH MY GOD. Who is. . .WHAT is this?!?" and it turned out to be Sarah Vaughan. Again. 😁 I subscribed after I came across your reaction to Lara Fabian, and now I'm even happier I did. (Here's hoping for more Vaughan and Fabian from you. 😉) Cheers!

Another great female singer of that era was Ella Fitzgerald...for a lush ballad, listen to her sing "Summertime," from "Porgy and Bess"...she has a voice like honey, but, she could also belt a note with the best of them...listen to the duet with "Satchmo," Louis Armstrong, "Dream a Little Dream," where they both do a little "scat" singing...it's jazz - and, music - magic...

You obviously enjoy 'interprative' singers! May I suggest 'Little Jimmy Scott', an American Jazz/Blues legend, who had to deal with a birth defect, that prevented him from maturing correctly, but still developed an amazing voice & style of his own. Lou Reed, & Joe Pesci, were his greatest allies in his later life, and he was still performing in his 80's! (though I prefer his 50's recordings)
