Today we’re headed for the beach! You’re probably familiar with the number one beach in the US, Siesta key, but there are a number of great beaches within minutes of Siesta Key and Sarasota. Each one has its own vibe and personality. Grab your sunscreen and let’s go!
▬ Siesta Key ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
The #1 beach in the US! The beautiful, fine white sand is actually quartz and stays cool on your feet even on hot summer afternoons. The beach is long and deep providing plenty of space for your party. During season, be sure to arrive early - before 11 AM to be sure of a parking spot!
▬ Turtle Beach ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Turtle beach tends to be less crowded than Siesta Beach and nearby picnic spots and playground make this a favorite for families. It’s also a good place to launch your kayak.
▬ Nokomis Beach ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Nokomis beach is the oldest public beach in Sarasota County and is our personal favorite. We love to bring the grand kids here and often see dolphin swimming in the inlet. We have actually been swimming in the water with gentle Manatees, an experience not to be forgotten.
▬ Jetties ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Next to Nokomis beach is the north jetty. The north and south jetties provide boaters access from the Intercoastal waterway to the gulf and is a popular spot for fishing.
▬ Venice Beach ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Venice beach is another beach popular with the locals. It features a boardwalk, concessions, volleyball courts, outdoor showers and more. You can access Venice Beach from downtown Venice, but our favorite spot is to the south off of Harbor Drive. There you’ll find the Venice Fishing Pier, a great place to view sunsets. Sharky’s on the pier is a local favorite for pub food and drinks right on the beach.
▬ Brohard Beach and Paw Park ▬
South of Venice beach is Paw Park Beach the only beach in Sarasota that allows dogs.
▬ Caspersen Beach ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
A bit further on is Caspersen Beach, well known as a place to find prehistoric shark’s teeth. You’ll see people sifting sand with what we call “Venice Snow Shovels” to find them. Caspseren beach is also one of the trail heads for the Venice Waterway trail, a multipurpose biking / walking / running trail that runs all the way north to Sarasota.
▬ Lido Beach ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
Moving back up north to Sarasota, we cross the Ringling Bridge to St. Armands Circle with it’s quaint shops and many fine restaurants. After lunch or dinner you can take a walk on Lido Beach which has the same fine, quartz sand as Siesta Key. If you are looking for some solitude, head north on the beach up to New Pass which is much less frequented.
▬ Longboat Key ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
North from Lido Key you cross over New Pass to Longboat Key. Longboat Key has limited public access points and so there are many fewer beach goers. Key and eye out for the blue and white beach access signs. One of these areas is called Buttonwood about ¼ mile north of Gulf of Mexico Drive.
▬ Coquina Beach ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬
North of Longboat Key you pass over the Longboat Pass Bridge onto Anna Maria Island and Coquina Beach. Anna Maria Island has a wonderful old Florida feel where flip flops are a way of life and the speed limit never exceeds 35!
