King Oscar Mediterranean is my favorite by far. It is my go to sardine. Excellent flavor, texture and quality. Plus I prefer my canned fish in olive oil.
I'm 75 yrs old. Got my first taste of sardines compliments of a hobo who was passing through my town in the 1950s. I've been a sardine lover ever since.
I'm a little late to see this. But, I have to tell you, I totally enjoyed watching you do this sardine and herring taste test❣️ I love canned sardines, herring, mackerel, smoked oysters, and even anchovies 😋 My dad raised me right! 🤣
The response to eating sardines while fishing has been great. So I started a channel called Time to eat the bait and will feature a different tin of seafood every Wed. and Sat. I would edit out the sardine part to keep the videos short but people keep commenting where is time to eat the bait?
Just recently started my own sardine taste tests. Only tried 3 on this video, Season, Brunswick and Great Value. Ate half a Great Value, gave the remainder to my dog. Ate half a Brunswick, gave the remainder to my dog. Ate half a Season, ate the remainder myself. My personal favorites so far are the Polar smoked Brisling sardines.
Love me some canned seafood. I grew up extremely poor with 6 siblings. My dad and I were the only ones who enjoyed sardines so we were guaranteed to always have a snack in the pantry. Now that I'm older and slightly richer, the best sardines I've had are Nuri sardines from Portugal. They cost a fortune as far as sardines go but damn are they good. I never go camping or fishing without them. There's also a Hawaiian dish made with canned sardines that's really good. Can't think of the name right now but you can find recipes on RU-vid for it.
Being a Canadian citizen, I'll have to go with the Brunswick brand that I've been eating regularly for 60+ years, I enjoy their Sardines and Herring in their different flavours...BTW their Sardines come in a more squarish can, not like the elongated Herring can!
I have fond memories of my dad eating sardines, Mackerel and Smoked Oysters. I have always loved any form of canned oily fish. I have always ate 2 cans of sardines a week for the last thirty years. When you don't want to be bothered by the wife or kids down a can of Sardines or Mackerel before the night is over you will be left alone, Or you will get the whole bed for the night. LOL
I agree, best memories ever eating sardines and herring with my Dad! In one video I call them a time machine that takes me back to the 1970's in my parents kitchen.
2/19/23......Sardines, ROCK!.....Weekly sardine eater, here! They are great in chicken broth,...makes a swell, poor man's fish soup. Had it for dinner last night. Plus croutons. I eat all the brands you are showing. An inexpensive meal, plus they are an excellent source of protein, plus Omega 3 vitamin benefits. Kippered Herring fillets is another favorite of mine. They provide you a cheap meal that is GOOD for you. I'm almost 70 years old, been eating them since I was a kid. Back when the tins required you use a built-in, metal "key", to pull back the top. Sometimes the present day, modern tins, will not open properly. It is possible the pull tab will fail, and you could be "shit-out-luck", in terms of opening them, if you don't have a mechanical rotary can opener, in your kitchen tool drawer. That is really a rare occurrence. They are better than eating a cookie, to stave off hunger. They are mild, and usually low in salt. They taste good in salads, even though I am not a fan of salads, Ha! They are a perfect "emergency" food. Keep some cans in your car, they never go bad. Great for camping trips. If your power ever goes out during a winter storm, they will keep you alive and satisfied. I used to add A-1 steak sauce, poured over a serving, when I wanted to be "fancy". Delish!
@@SRadigFishing Yeah, I buy a brand of chicken broth that has less salt & fat. Add a tin of sardines, chop it up a bit,.....into the micro-wave to heat it up. ( a person could get fancy and add already cooked vegetables),...not me, I'm too lazy.
I just found this video! Now Radig, as a fellow SE Louisiana kayak fisherman I'm saying: " What is this guy doing eating sardines?" Then I thought, "Oh yeah! We coonasses will eat anything that swims (and many things that don't swim)! Seriously, it was a great video - you did a great job! I like sardines myself - great food to store for the apocalypse!
Fun video. I'm not a big fan of canned fish, but I eat sardines for their nutritional value. I usually buy whatever is the most inexpensive. Glad to see my choices meet with your approval.
I grew up eating sardines because I’m Portuguese and grew up in Northern California.. recently moved to Portugal to retire and the sardines here are so much better and fresh.
Great video! Best part for me? I haven’t thought about that church key and rolling back the top of the tin in forever. I like the tin with the foil. Good idea. Great lunch with a cold beer or some white wine. Excellent!
King Oscar makes a version called "Tiny Tots", which are smaller sardines. They are excellent. A lot of the cold water fish from Thailand, like salmon and tuna, and I assume sardines, are really cold water fish that are processed on factory ships in Thailand. For example, there are no salmon native to Thailand, or any other tropical country. If you ever go to Japan, in sushi bars order iwashi, which is the Japanese word for sardines. They are excellent, and are one of the least expensive things to order.
Cool video. I'm going to get my 1st sardines ever tomorrow, gotta make sure I get the good ones. I'm on a sardine video binge and I can't get them out of my head. People really seem like love them. You seem like an easy going person from the way you carry yourself.
I love sardines, the Canadian style sardines by Brunswick are my go to but there are plenty of types of sardines where I live in the UK as well as pilchards, another oily fish I love is mackerel, good video and good on you for your sardine habit. Not enough people have one.
I was surprised to see Brunswick Sardine filets, I don't think I've ever seen them in Canada, perhaps they are an export product. The Brunswick sardines I get are just regular sardines, about 5 to a can. You can get them in several flavours.
Sardines are one of the most nutritious foods in a can. I eat anything from the ocean. I've loved sardines my whole life. My wife however, hates sardines. So I eat my sardines out in my shop. Sometimes I catch em from my kayak. Very good food.
That was a great video !!! I love sardines and I have and have since I was a kid. About 60 years ago....long time. I've tried every one that you had and I will say that the Polar kippers are pretty damn good. My favorite is and always has been the Brunswick kippers. Now , I will say that they have changed a bit over the years but I love em. Nothing wrong with the King Oscars sardines. There isn't anything wrong with any sardine or kipper. Just my 2 cents worth. Thank you for this great video. I'll look for more of your videos!!!
There's a few brands with mustard or tomato sauce I love. I've had all the brands you showed here. I agree with you about nutrients missing on the skinned and deboned types. Costco has a nice brand here in Louisiana. My favorite way to eat sardines is in a sandwich with thin-sliced onions, mustard and maybe some capers or sliced pepproncini. The herring I just like straight out of the tin. You mention canned salmon: makes the best "burger" patties. The best smoked herring, etc., I've ever had came from a Deli in Los Angeles where they sell the whole fish. My Polish in-laws always served herring in white sauce from a jar at holiday meals. Good stuff.
I like them chilled in the fridge, plus they seem to come out of the can more intact that way. My go to brand is Brunswick herring in olive oil. I used to prefer the dill mustard version, but tastes change I guess. Now I like the plain olive oil. I'll have to try the cheaper brands.
Man ! I love Sardines ! I like mine in hot sauce ! And also with some cocktail sauce! King Oscar is hard to beat but the 88 cent walmart sardines are an awesome value and delicious! Great video, Hooked on sardines for life ! Love them ! Right out of the can ! I miss the old days with the roll up key for the can ...
I have another channel called (Time To Eat The Bait) where all I do is review sardines and tinned seafood. I am 14 tins into a series of 18 tins on sardines with hot sauce or peppers right now.
The kippers I remember from childhood were dried salted red herrings and they didn't come in a can. They weren't juicy. I started hankering for them and had to special-order them from Jamaica. They have largely disappeared in the US.
Thanks for your wonderful video! Canned fish especially sardines are so neglected by people. I enjoyed the comments. Sardine lovers unite & spread the good news!😂❤❤
I’ve been eating the King Oscar sardines for the past couple of years. I’ve seen those Cliff House sardines at the dollar store but was weary about trying them. I might give them a try now.
I'd love to send you some of our Australian sardines from the Southern Ocean. We also have Mackeral fillets which are real nice. The bonus of the ocean i live on, the Southern ocean is it is pretty much pristine, it's deep and cold and we have a great product here. Get in touch and I'll send you some
Thanks for the offer. If I can't find some in local import markets I might take you up on that. For now send me some of the brand names so I can look for them.
I eat sardines and herring often. I only buy if they are not packed in oil. Packed in oil is a crap shoot - olive oil is not likely to be of high quality and vegetable oils are very inflammatory. My preferred fish isVita brand herring is wine sauce or in cream sauce. I love fried herring (bratherring) and herring in mustard sauce. Even packed in water is better than oil. And I'm with you: skin and bones. Need that collagen. I found this video very informative. Thanks.
I love it when the underdog does good. Sardines got me through the first six months of my deployment in Iraq in 03. But damn this man loves his sardines. I love a man enjoying his sardines.
Great video, and I concur on your ratings. Polar, and every other can from Germany I've had are excellent, but usually the most expensive. Brunswick has a kipper called "Golden Smoked" I find them to be smoked more than the standard and much closer to Polar in texture. Keep an eye out for them.
I actually live in New Brunswick, where the Brunswick sardines come from. What I find amusing is that you don't fish in the rain. Of course it's snowing here...
I stumbled upon this video and can so relate. Love canned fish as well as fresh fish. Thanks for enlightening me on all the better brands than what is available at my local Costco.
I love these products, as a boy (55 years ago) we would have for Dinner Herring in tomato sauce, with mashed potatoes with finely chopped raw onion mixed though the mashed potatoes, Enjoyed your video
Would love to see a taste comparison on canned Salmon, my mother always loved to eat them or make fish cakes with them. Loved the comparison of the Sardines, although the Brunswick Kippers are my favorite, I'll have to try the King Osar ones. Thanks
Here is a link to exactly that, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4TsepZkH-wQ.html I have another channel Time To Eat The Bait. I post most my sardine eating there because they make my fishing videos too long sometimes.
Those King Oscar sardines with the olives in it are on the expensive side but they're so dang tasty. I usually have them once a week. I love the occasional crunchy bones in it too. never had the kippers before, i'll have to give them a try sometime
Well, I was planning to have a full English breakfast. But your video was so entertaining that I had to pause it midway to search for a can of sardines so I could eat Sardines on toast. Thanks for making my day. Hope the rain cleared up. I subscribed....
I prefer mine packed in water but get along fine with most brands. I just tried those Brunswick fillets last week. Only got one tin since I'd never seen them before. I'll be grabbing more of those later. The kipper snacks I've been on come in a paper box, don't recall the name but good and smokey. Great snacks to have around for the keto diet.
Muffaletta sandwiches from New Orleans are very delicious. They are big in size also. I am from Sicilia, Italia originally. We eat alot of Sardines. And from warmer waters of Mediterranean. Salut Amicu!
Brunswick sardines used to be great when i was a kid. Had about 10 or so in a can. Now they jam about 4 in there. Taste has suffered. Brunswick Golden Smoked kippers are pretty decent. I can slurp up a can of those in no time.
Thanks for doing something I've always wanted to try: a lot of different sardines in a side-by-side taste test. I'm a King Oscar fan, but I will be more open minded about other brands, having watched you. Thanks a million!
You need to try the Riga Gold sprats natural smoked from Latvia. I heard a woman talk about it in a grocerie store and grabbed a couple of cans ( they come in a glass also ). I've been buying them ever since.
i want sardines now for sure ! they all look great ! i do like Polar brand a lot ! you are cool AF ! you like them all ! 😆 nothin wrong with that ! you did say witch one you like better so thats cool !
sardines in tomato sauce are the best, closely followed by hot sauce, even though i like my spicy food the tomato sauce seems to marinade more into the tinned fish producing better flavor.
thank you for this review! Health wise speaking, the ones in soybean oil aren't that healthy. That oil is inflammatory and not good for our bodies. But, I'm glad they were tasty! The King Oscar ones look really good, especially with the olives and seasonings! I'll have to try the Polar brand. I haven't eaten sardines in years, but I'm going to start eating them again, so I very much appreciate your review. It looks like you live in a rural area... it seems like it's beautiful there! take care.
I try to eat sardines every fishing trip on my channel, I call that segment time to eat the bait. What once was rural southeast Louisiana is now becoming a mad house like most places.
@@SRadigFishing I wish you the best of luck on your fishing expeditions! I love to fish, especially for salmon, just for the sport of it. But since I moved to California, I don't go fishing, unfortunately. And if you come to the San Francisco bay area, don't expect to get a fresh fish sandwich, but you might find a shrimp sandwich. Fresh fish dinner unless you go to a high-end restaurant. Honestly, I'm not sure how fresh they are though! Best regards. I subscribed!
I must admit that I'm a huge fan of sardines. Blame my Swede heritage. But in this modern world, the healthiest food is seafood that includes the whole fish, and a species that has little bioaccumulation of heavy metals. That makes sardines a superfood. Problem is, the Baltic is the most polluted sea in the world, so even sardines from Poland are a danger. Thanks for doing a taste test. I'm with you on liking a fishy flavor that is clean. Nothing wrong with fishy. What I find offputting is fish that tastes of metal or rot. Try doing a taste test of canned seafood from the far East. There are some really interesting things you can get there.
Thank you for this honest and insightful video! I LOVE sardines too. Will you please try the BEST online sardine from Portugal? They come in a multipack. Not sure the name but Amazon has them. Thanks again! God Bless You fisherman!
