That whole skilled vs unskilled thing, it's the same way in chess. When I play against someone who is really bad I actually struggle because I'm used to playing people who understand the game better. The unskilled players are unpredictable, on account of them not really ever having a plan, and so I sometimes lose a lot of pieces, and even the game.

His initial cavalry charge would have been brilliant if he committed his infantry to a general advance on your position whilst fighting through your skirmishes and flanking your main position.

Careful not to read too much Arrian Oakley! He's firmly rooted in the Official tradition and is one of the key apologists for Alexander. While I do agree that the The Landmark Arrian is an excellently illustrated book, I think that Alexander the Great by Waldemar Heckel and JC Yardley is better in some ways because it gives accounts from Plutarch and the Vulgate tradition.

Roman formations actually did pretty well against phalanxes, due to the slow moving and inflexible nature of them. Romans eventually perfected their cohort formations and created the most modular force the world ever knew.

Would say it is too late to attempt playing online , or should i just wait for warhammer? I have been playing Total War games since about october which is not quite long, but i really love the series... in campaign mode. I have never really played online and i can tell there is a high skill cap.I pressume i would have a hard time getting close to wins since people already have quite some experience in this game. Again, do you think i should try jumping in on Rome 2 after only two months of experience of the game in single player or just try to get on a level field when warhammer comes out?

The bad player thing is completely true, when I play poker im pretty good against competent people, but its impossible against people who dont know what they are doing because you cant predict them or know if they know what they are doing. You cant double bluff someone who cant read a bluff

The Romans could not beat the phalanx? Interesting. I've read that they defeated a phalanx by throwing their pilum (throwing spears) to create gaps in the phalanx front ranks. They then used these gaps to enter into the phalanx, and started hacking away with their swords. Once in close combat like this, the pikes of the phalanx would of course be pretty useless.

And yup Tilea's main strategy is Pike-n-Shot tactics (but with crossbows) backed up by cav and duelists and more unique Regiments of Renown units. Hands down one of my favorite armies I had for the table top

Yea head on the pikes almost always beat the Romans. When the Romans did when it was usually because of other variables in the battle.

The whole thing with professional vs unprofessional is just bullshit some people make up to excuse themselves for not being good at the game. A good player is ready for anything.
