Do you negotiate / inform the customer first that you may damage the internal paint? assuming quote was just for exterior. whats your process. if they agree you leave the nicks and chipped paint inside? or lump it?
@howtopaintinfo
@howtopaintinfo 2 года назад
Unfortunately it's the price you pay to have windows that go up and down, either the customer wants them to work or not. As to damage, if you are careful damage is minimal and could be touched up if necessary. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.

That seems way faster than digging them out with a sharp blade. Have you ever cracked a pane doing this?

So far, no, you just need to be a little careful not to use too much force. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe

Thanks for sharing your knowledge, amazing tip! How do you get the windows to glide up and down easily? My windows are not painted and I find it's a huge effort to open and close. Would applying wax around the timber help?

I was going to suggest wax, it should work. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.

Have you got a video on the best way to repaint these sash windows. Should it be oil based?
@howtopaintinfo
@howtopaintinfo Год назад
Yes I have and it depends if they have been done in oil before, if so the redo in oil if water based was used then redo in water based, thats for exterior. Interior I would use oil based as when doing the inside you should do the runners and they are best done in oil based paint. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.

I always use a putty knife and 5in1 tool and tap with the butt of the hammer handle; then scrape the channel and lubricate it and the edge of the sash with a bar of soap. Another helpful tip is to always keep your 5in1 tool sharp.

@@howtopaintinfo I subscribed to your channel months ago. I swear man, you and I use almost the identical methodology to coat something; it's like we learned from the same master and I'm still learning pro tips from you now, and it's been 20 years since I last worked as a professional painter. Thanks a bunch and G'day.

Most tradesmen will do things the same way as that's how we are taught. There are so many self taught painters that don't really know what they are doing or they just don't care.

This may be unrelated but this is just a question could I bring a sash window onto a plane. I don't mean a big one but a small one?

Chisel...jeez, easier with a decorators scraper, and less likely to damage the window frame, as so thin....

If every you have done something like this then you would know paint scrapers bend and can be ruined by trying to free up a window. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.

Does this work if you only have access to one side (but it's painted on both sides?).

exterior timber should be painted with linseed paints acrylic alkyd paints will rot the timber or make the paint flake in time.
@howtopaintinfo
@howtopaintinfo 2 года назад
It is surprising how good acrylics are, I have used oil based on gutters and fascia's before and acrylic seems to last a lot longer from my experience. Acrylics expand and contract with the weather changes better then oil based paint does. Don't forget to Like, Share and Subscribe.

@@howtopaintinfo linseed oil paints traditional paints will last longer than any petroleum plastic paints like acrylics and solvent oil paints it does boggle my mind why linseed paints became not very available causing the drive towards plastic windows and doors etc.
