Yes they are all pleasing patterns, but as you say, it's best to start simple with the horizontal pattern and build oneself up gradually. Is it customary to leave the edges of the fabric on which the sashiko is embroidered raw or are they hemmed or is that a matter of individual preference?

Xiaoxiao, like you suggested, I'm going to start with the Horizontal stitch until I feel comfortable with the length and size of my work. You've done an amazing job showing some different patterns and they are all beautiful! I will then do the "Rice flower" stitch and finally the fundo-tsunagi pattern. I will have to ask my husband how to say it though! He was a Japanese professor for many years. Thanks again for your wonderful and informative Shashiko videos! Stephanie

The embroidery I learnt from my mother is based on this one stitch system at a time. It has beautiful patterns based on this simple stitch system😊 Also women in our village use this stitch for quilting.
@XiaoxiaoYarn

Thank you! That sounds fascinating! May I know where you are from and do you know if there's a name for the technique? Actually, sashiko is also used in quilting and mending!

I am originally from South Asia, now live in Norway. The name of the embroidery technique I learned from my mother is "pathani kashida". The ladies who use it in quilting live all through the South Asian Continent, but the ones I referred to are from the villages of Sindh, the southeren province of Pakistan.

Hi there! Thank u for these patterns, I find simple horizontal lines so beautiful already :) I was wondering - is there any reason for not crossing lines in sashiko? Some spiritual or something like that maybe?
@XiaoxiaoYarn
@XiaoxiaoYarn 2 года назад
Hi Denisa, thanks for your very interesting question. As far as I know, this is not spiritual related. From what I've read, to avoid crossing the stitches helps your work stay clean and neat, but you can also find some crossing stitch patterns, for example the "crossing ten" and the "rice" pattern - this is for the purpose of adding texture to your fabric.

@XiaoxiaoYarn
@XiaoxiaoYarn Месяц назад
How about a little round coster or mending patch? :)
@kavithaskify
@kavithaskify Год назад
When mending a garment, do you always make your patch first and then add it on to the garment? Or do you mend it directly on the garment? Thank you. and can I say what a lovely video.
@XiaoxiaoYarn
@XiaoxiaoYarn 10 месяцев назад
Both! Sewing directly to the patch and garments will make the mend stronger. If your cloth is not that worn out, for example, it's a relatively new shirt, but you made a hole in it by accident, which means the rest of the fabric is still strong. In this case, you can just sew a patch and cover the hole.

Hello Xiaoxiao, i got a problem. I want to use natural silk, Dupion. Its red and the colour is bleeding out even after warm washing, so i want to make sashiko with it in black to avoid colour changing...but what pencil i should use because i do not like to wash more often because i should not wash it again. Do you have a tip for me?🙏 I dont want visible lines...
@XiaoxiaoYarn
@XiaoxiaoYarn Год назад
Hi, you should be able to find the link of heat erasable pens under my videos, however, I'm not sure if it will dissolve in lower heat, also the one with black colour sometimes is less easy to get rid of. You can test it before you use it. Another tool I think that may help is the hera marker (amzn.to/3IuopKD), if you are making straight lines. Also, if you use silk, make sure you choose a thinner needle, and you probably want to test your threads, too. Hope it helps. Have fun. :)
