It’s nice to watch this in hindsight. SATA express never took off and it’s now a dead standard with no SSDs supporting it

When I was a young teenager (1990) I dreamed of the day you could make a hard disk that looked like ram that you hook to to one of those slots on the pc and it would be super duper fast. I even asked a man at some computer store about this. I was laughed out the store. He said: "They don't even use that in Star trek or Star Wars, how could that even be possible in the next 20 years?" I wish I could see his face now.

I have no idea why the RU-vid algorithm recommended this video to me. I bought an X99 mainboard about 10 years ago so I could have SATA Express support in the hopes that I would see future devices using it. Instead, it became obsolete, only to be replaced with system boards with numerous M.2 slots. I suppose they call it "Bleeding edge" for a reason.

Hey Linus, would you make a video about future-proofing? (Sorry if this is the wrong channel)
@wawaweewarice5302
@wawaweewarice5302 9 лет назад
That's just a simple concept. Like buying extra food to last you another week. In this case, more power/speed/capacity than you already need like when you get an i7 so you won't need to upgrade for another 3 years or if you get a 6TB hard drive so you don't run in the future
@SidheKnight
@SidheKnight 9 лет назад
Wawaweewa Rice I know what it is, but I was expecting a more.. complete analysis. A guide to future proofing, advantages, disadvantages, how to do it properly, is it worth it? etc.
@johnpark3243
@johnpark3243 9 лет назад
SidheKnight From what I know about the subject future proofing seems to be a nice time saver, but you are going to have to pay more for it. Buying high end components when they first come out is gonna have a hefty price premium, it's usually best to buy parts in the "sweet spot" range around 150 - 250 dollars (I don't know where u live or what currency you use, but I'm sure you know the sweet spot in your currency). This USUALLY gets you the best bang for your buck and most of the time lasts a few years depending on your expectations, and will certainly outlast a couple generations of consoles if you plan on using your pc to game. Hope this helps a little.
@sniperlif3
@sniperlif3 9 лет назад
Get a computer, save up, buy upgrades. Future proof. Honestly you can't future proof your stuff much. You could buy a top of the line computer today and it would be slow in comparison in 5-10 years.

Linus, since we're moving towards SSDs as being ubiquitous for everything, and slowly phasing out magnetic drives, how about an episode on the reliability of modern SSDs, and are they comparable to the reliability of hard drives? I ask this from the perspective of someone who just had a 32GB sd card fail after four years of use, and also from the perspective of someone who had to RMA their brand new 2TB hard drive. If we're going to move towards SSDs, I would hope we have solved the problem of limited writes that is a guarantee that solid state memory solutions will fail.
@Hauptseite
@Hauptseite 9 лет назад
LogicOwl | Let's Plays I'd say that anything is guaranteed to fail eventually. The magnetic head of the HDD will eventually wear out and modern SSDs are rated in the hundreds of TBs writes if I am not mistaken-SSDs can actually last into the /Petabyte/ range. This is an insanely high number that no normal person would ever get to until after quite a few years. Extreme stress tests were done on six SSDs, constantly being filled to the brim with data and then being erased, only to repeat the process over and over without a single break 24/7. These suckers lasted well beyond any normal person's usage. Here's the test: techreport.com/review/27062/the-ssd-endurance-experiment-only-two-remain-after-1-5pb

You're likely confusing people, please annotate and describe data rates correctly. The upper/lower case of the "B" is important. MBps = MegaBYTES per second (8 bits per byte), and Mbps = MegaBITS per second... There is a vast difference between the two. 1 Megabyte = 8 Megabits...

768 MegaBytes = 6 GigaBits. But no it doesn't matter in consumer standards since people only divide by 1000 and divide by 10 instead of dividing by 1024 and 8.
@PaulTheFox1988
@PaulTheFox1988 9 лет назад
6Gbps equals 600MB/s because SATA uses what's known as 8/10b encoding. Basically this means that for every 8bits of usable data that is sent along a SATA connection an extra 2 bits are used for error correction. So when you take out that overhead, you end up with real world speeds closer to 600MB/s instead of the ~750MB/s.

I wouldn't worry about the 960, get in on a cheap 970 deal. The MSI 970 4G is dropping, and it's great. One or two 970's single or SLI is enough for 1080p and 1440p by far. Mine are overclocked past Titan X so not bad for $600 some.
