THE YETZER HARA: Is Our Evil Inclination Really Evil? - Rabbi Michael Skobac - Jews for Judaism
The concept of Satan is understood universally as thoroughly negative. The Jewish sages identified Satan as in internal force within our personalities called the Yetzer Hara or Evil Inclination. Despite the negativity this term implies, there is an up-side to our "inner adversary". In this lecture Rabbi Michael Skobac explores the complex and paradoxical nature of the Yetzer Hara and help us appreciate how it can serve as a vehicle for spiritual growth.
JEWS FOR JUDAISM is an international organization dedicated to countering the multi-million dollar efforts of Christian missionary groups that target Jews, the impact of cults and eastern religions, and the growing rate of intermarriage that is devastating the Jewish community. JEWS FOR JUDAISM achieves its goal through FREE educational programs, materials and counseling services that connect Jewish people to the spiritual depth, beauty and wisdom of Judaism and keeps Jews Jewish. Thanks Rabbi Scobak for your kindness in giving us the best way of living our life with the knowledge of the Torah of Hashem blessed is He. This teaching have opened my eyes. I have been taught a different path for so long. Growing up as a Catholic by force as an ancestor of the Sephardic Jews, I was almost lost spiritually, but thanks for the Jewish Rabbis, I have been given a chance for the salvation of my soul. This is the greatest chance of my life. B"H

Shalom Rabbi Skobac, I just now finished listening to your new RU-vid lecture on The Yetzer Hara and feel compelled to tell you again how very much your teaching means to me. As you began to tell the story of Joseph, and described in detail the nature of his struggle in the temptation he faced, my heart was gripped. You then went on to teach about the shalshelet, giving an audio demonstration of how it might sound. (Thank you for overcoming what I perceived to be a measure of reluctance.) It was at that point, Rabbi, that I broke into tears. As you continued to elaborate on the meaning of that cantillation, I had an overwhelming sense that someone understood me, that, in fact, the Almighty himself is present in my own struggle. I am not one inclined to dramatize or even to be overly emotional, but I need to tell you that I perceive that this teaching has penetrated deeply into my soul. And then you spoke about the Proverb of a righteous man falling and getting up ... that it's actually the process itself that is the pathway to righteousness. (I am crying right now as I write these words.) This stuff is over the top ... amazingly merciful, incredibly humbling. I seriously don't even feel to be in much shape to be writing right now. I am overcome with a desire to connect with our wonderful Creator, and all the while well aware of my own shortcomings that seem to disable me from making significant progress on that path. I know that progress is happening, but I am not everything I can be. Thank you for what I can only presume will be your open heart to hear from one of your grateful listeners. I remain very thankful that Hashem has directed my attention to your faithful dispensing of the light of Torah and the beautiful work of Jews for Judaism. With gratitude, Name withheld for privacy (This comment was originally emailed to the Rabbi)

Whoever you are, brother or sister, please remember that it is when this struggle happens that we are able to come very close to the Divine Presence. I'm not writing from a place of comfort, on the contrary. But I feel Him more now than I ever did for months and months when everything was OK. G-d bless you.
