If you want to get into dental practice ownership, doing a startup dental practice can be a relatively more affordable way to own a practice than buying. However, opening a dental practice from scratch isn't easy street. There are still significant costs associated with opening up and if you go ahead with a startup, you want to be very thoughtful in how you can position your new practice for success.
In this video I go through what you'll need to consider as a dentist who wants to open a brand new practice. Picking the right location, setting a business plan, and more!

@@jmey You presented a lot of specific and practical things in this one. I liked how you went into talking about finding areas with good demographics and dental saturation rates (especially that google maps trick). Furthermore, your advice on doing a start-up and owning the real-estate to then sell the practice to have a long term tenant is genius. I had never thought of that. I'm currently in dental school in the Midwest and have been putting a lot of thought into how I want my career to look. I had been leaning towards buying another doc out, but (as you explained) having the ability to build an office the way I want, with the equipment I want, and with the culture I want sounds even more appealing then having that immediate cashflow in the long run. However, both methods can work in the end, it just comes down to personal preference. This one of the great things about dentistry in my opinion, you have many options on how to build you career and you can really get creative with how you do it and what you incorporate. As of right now, the idea of working in a more rural area and doing a start-up sounds very appealing to me, but I'm only a D1 so let's see what I think in three years.

Hey Joel, love the vids! I’m curious, how do you get equipment, specifically floss and tootbrushes? How much should you pay for these type of items ideally?

Your videos are always excellent. I'd be curious to find out how the math pencils out if we're talking about a specialist. For example, if you're an orthodontist or periodontist, where there are even fewer specialists on a per capita basis, how does that bear on the financial decisions concerning starting your own practice.

much different. very nuanced but at a high level, a startup practice a much more viable option as a specialist

Question. My dental practice owners have been opened for 6-7 months with at most 10 patient a WEEK. DO you think it's going to last?
