I know this was a year old comment but I just wanted to add that when they perform this on stage it's all done on a revolving stage so the choreography is even more complicated
@@greatmightypanda true, but at least every actor has their mic so they don't have to worry about reaching it in time, or sharing it with another cast member ;)
when the fate (sorry i dont know their name) sings "who are you to think you can hold your head up higher then your fellow man" IS INCREDIBLE AND I SEE NO ONE TALKING ABOUT THEM
"I'll tell you where the real road lies: between your ears, behind your eyes- that is the path to Paradise, likewise to road to ruin." That line right there is poetic genius. Huge props to this incredible cast, no doubt, AND... Anais Mitchell is my new superhero.
@@marjorieaguirre9700 So glad to see his name mentioned. THE Andre De Shields, who was already a Broadway veteran when he opened in a little known musical in the title role of "The Wiz" 46 years ago!
The amount of POC representation in this musical is phenomenal. I don't know who did it or why, but the decision that Greek mythology is best vocally told through soul or jazz style music absolutely knew what the FUCK they were doing! Those fates almost steal the show!
@@shoepixie Menken wrote the music for Disney’s Hercules where The Muses used gospel and soul styles of music. I’m guessing that’s what Matt was referring to.
I’ve taken Shakespeare lessons with Patrick Page (Hades) for 6 months (starting my 3rd course tomorrow), and let me just say, watching him apply the things he teaches us is just beyond amazing. I can see his method in just that short dialogue. Absolutely incredible, as is the entire cast.
The fates meet the Schuyler Sisters: WHO ARE YOU- We're the schuyler sisters! Who are you to lead them? Angelica~ Eliza~ and Peggy. We're lookin for a guy at work!
The beautiful diversity of this cast!! As an Asian woman, it’s so rare to see an Asian female lead who isnt playing stereotypical Asian roles or a role that is very closely tied to their race.
*Coolest ever cast overflowing with talent:* sing their hearts out *Eva:* gives masterclass in scene-stealing vocals *the three people in the audience:* woo! :)
Y' know, the more we hear voice of Eurydice the less we hear Orpheus. It's like the more stronger and more confident she becomes the more doubts he has. So sad
Honestly, from what I’ve seen that’s kinda what’s happening. He was the one with all the faith and hope, but then the trip changed him. Just when she needed him to be endlessly hopeful and trusting he isn’t and she is.
@@taylarolympia2202 Wait for Me for Orpheus is to psych himself up for the conviction to push through the trip to get to Eurydice. The reprise, it's triumphant for Eurydice. It makes sense though. Eurydice has no reason to mistrust Hades. He gave her exactly what she bargained for. It's just not what made her happy. Her experience wandering and getting burned by fate probably made her more resilient. Meanwhile, Orpheus has no reason to trust Hades after his interactions with him. He sings Epic III literally as the "you get one last song and then I destroy you" ultimatum, gets beaten up, threatened, and takes away a darker point of view. If we go with the story structure of Thesis, Antithesis, and Synthesis for character arcs, Eurydice reaches synthesis, while Orpheus doesn't, and that's what makes the tragedy. Arguably all the characters *except* Orpheus (and Hermes, but he's the storyteller so I don't expect him to have an arc) end up at some level of synthesis.
I'm so glad we're getting to a point where diversity is no longer about having irrelevant characters that look different, nor their stories being just about their race, gender, sexuality or whatever makes them part of a minority group: it is also about having a diverse group of relevant characters whose narratives can be about anything.
The voice casting is extraordinary in this musical. Sometimes I think I can't go there again but I want to hear their voices blend one more time. Next thing I know, Hadestown rabbit hole.
I love the way they sound on the recording, but there's a softness in the way they deliver the lines in this performance that is absolutely breathtaking.

I have tickets to the first show back after Quarantine and I am HYPED. This performance his me so emotionally and I am 100% I will cry when I see this live. Edit: Last night was reopening night and that was the greatest night of my life. Absolutely magical. The Opening standing ovation is on RU-vid and I highly recommend giving it a watch. That, living it up on top, wait for me, and Road to hell Reprise were the best parts of the show. Everyone had such great energy. I'm pretty sure I caught both Amber Gray and Reeve Carney crying during the show as well.
I’ve seen and heard a lot of musicals in 30 years but this one left me dumbstruck. In terms of the quality of music this is better than anything I’ve heard in years
A damn can't believe the other got taken down. Is there more recordings from this TV appearance? The official When The Chips Are Down video seems to have some other footage.
I’ve seen the Bdwy version on opening weekend (with no idea of what I was going to see) and when it reopened after phase 1 of COVID closing. I’m blown away by the voices, acting, and story. Up there with ‘Phantom’, ‘Hamilton’ and other great shows yet very distinct. The overall casting is phenomenal!
just saw the road companies performance and that hades had an even better talking and his singing bass was simply incredible and his stage presence was outstanding
The vocal talent in this cast is... otherworldly. It's a challenging show to sing, and I'm glad they got the casting right. Just saw it live at the Kerr a few days ago with several folks stepping into the leads as u/s or swing, and they're nailing it too. Lillias adds a whole new dimension to Hermes. Genius casting. That's gonna be the thing that makes or breaks the longevity of this show. If you get the right people singing it, it's timelessly excellent. But it's super hard, so if they ever let the talent on stage slip, it's gonna show immediately.
Every single member of this cast is phenomenal, and I'm so happy to see them showcasing other character, but can we take a moment to talk about Reeve's five seconds of singing? When you think about this moment within the context of the show, Orpheus already had Is It True and Epic III to take out breath away. He's already lit the flame and started the revolution. He's shared his song and now is the moment for him to step back and let the rocks and stones of Hadestown echo it. After seeing him absolutely SLAY Wait For Me with so much feeling and power, there's something really special about the softness he has in the reprise. Eva's vocals are meant to shine in this number, and they hecking do. I think letting her overpower him 00:21-00:38 is a wonderful choice that really works with the emotion of the song. He sings in a lower key with a breathiness that really contrasts against his whole "la la la" thing. When he sings "for me" after turning to Eurydice at 00:32 it's so soft and almost intimate it really feels like he's tired and hopeful all at once. A stunning example of when it's more impactful to hold back than to go big.
This is also narratively significant. Up to this point orpheus was always the confident one, the one who has hope, the one who saw the world the way it could be. For the first time in this show eurydice takes that role, because orpheus finally saw the world for what it is and is starting to have doubt. The roles have switched.
Simply beautiful. I can't imagine how many more talented people whose names we may never know, and faces we may never see worked on this project. This is why we must keep the arts alive in our public schools.
Well, if it helps, in the original myth orpheus is reunited with euridice after he is killed and they walk side by side along the river styx for eternity.
It's been how many years now since Hadestown opened? I've been fortunate enough to see Hadestown twice on broadway, and have listened to the soundtrack countless times over the years since. Yet this song still manages to make me ugly cry every single time I hear it. Words cannot describe how powerful this is. Thank you for this. Thank you.
This song fills my soul, so beautiful🥹 we were randomly walking down the street in Midtown Manhattan one night and Andre De Shields walks by us I couldn’t contain myself, I said “it’s youuuu!!! I’m a huge fan!!” He was so nice, took a pic with us before he went on his way. Random experiences like that are just one of many reasons I’ll always hold New York City close to my heart.
no fricking way! i first saw reeve carney in penny dreadful as dorian gray and literally fell in love- i had no clue he could sing let alone he was on broadway!!
Yah I just have to watch this every couple of months or so to fill my heart, have a good cry and just marvel at the talent of the beautiful human beings ❤️❤️❤️❤️
