Listening to Mitch's pitches. He has a bigger vocal range than I realized. It's not a b, it's a symbol for flat notes. And # is the symbol for sharp notes. When someone can initiate a marker on a dry erase board.😱 Worth all 30+ minutes.

A4 is a note. So to give you an idea , looking at a piano the middle Ivory note C is C4. The scale from that point is C D E F G A B THEN ON TO C5. If you go down scale C B A G F E D then C3. The black keys make the # (# means sharp) and b. (b means flat) The note can sound different in head and chest even though it's the same because of resonance etc. Mix is when it's not all in the chest but hasn't all gone up into the head. Just a very quick brief overview. LOL Hope it helps a little Great reaction love my Mitchy 😎 A whistle is when the vocal chords are closed except a small opening slit. (Think blowing grass between your thumbs and I know you know what I mean) Mad control for a woman hugely difficult for a male. 😎

That was the most complex explanation of scales I have ever seen…. Let me simplify. Middle of the keyboard is the 4th scale, A1 is the A key in the first scale. B7 is the B key in 7th scale. I.e. he has a 6+ octave voice. Sharp and flat were not part of his question, and getting way more technical than necessary for a laments explanation.

They are notes, you were correct with that. The # is ‘sharp’ and the italic b is ‘flat’ so - for example - B sharp or B flat. The numbers are which octave the note is from. Think of the range as the set of 8 keys (a thru g) on the piano. The set at the far left of the piano is A0-G0. The next set is A1-G1 and so on to the far right of the keyboard. So his range indicates all notes from A1 to B7 on the piano. Hope that helps a little :) Great reaction!

(I'm not a vocal coach, so I'm sharing my simplified understanding of this) Mitch is actually much more sophisticated in how he chooses to produce the notes he sings - it's not a case of singing chest as high as you can and then switching into head voice. You have to make sure that the vocal phrasing is smooth, that the notes sound right in the flow of the song, and that you are managing your "instrument" in a way that is healthy and won't damage it. Mitch is a master at register hopping, just one of many ways he combines inborn talent with study, hard work, and skill. All of the group members do this :-) Mitch is particularly good at mixed-mask, which is bringing chest qualities up into lighter head voice notes, by deliberately managing where the voice is resonating. "Defying Gravity" is a really good example of him doing this.

Wow! 6 octaves!!!!! Amazing! One Octave is A B C D E F G Next octave up is 2 and includes anotherA B C D E F G Another octave higher would be 3 and includes another A B C D E F G So each octave consists of those 8 notes. So Mitch can sing SIX OCTAVES - that's 48 notes from lowest to highest! Eb4 is the note E flat in the 4th octave.

This was so fun! I am so envious of artists that can hit whistle notes. Mitch and Kirstie are so good at whistle notes(although Mitch has said he doesn't do it properly) I beg to differ 😁. There's one thing to be able to randomly hit a very high pitched whistle note, but there's another thing when you're able to control the note that's coming out, kind of like Mariah Carey status. Tori Kelly hit a whistle note at the end of the superfruit mashup video, and I remember your reaction to that 😂. Love watching these unicorns in there natural habitat. Thanks for the reaction 🙏🏾❤️

I've been watching your entire library of Pentatonix videos and just now subscribed (I literally NEVER subscribe to these because I don't want tons of notifications). It's been interesting to watch your own evolution as you started on your journey to a capella music. Everyone here has well described the vocal notes, but I thought maybe you might want to have something to compare what is "normal" to the range Mitch has (A1-B7). Each level goes C1, D1, E1, F1, G1, A1, B1 then it goes to the next level (C2, D2, etc.). It goes down the scale in the same way with the C1 going down to B0, A0, etc. with the sharps and flats as half-notes between the whole notes. The average man might have a 1-1/2 to a 2-octave range (an octave is the 8 whole notes from one C to the next B) while a woman might have a range of 2 to 3 octaves.

chest, head, mix and falsetto can be distinguished by the tonal quality: chest is warm, 'easy'-sounding; head is a brighter tone; mix is that tipping point between chest and head, when it could be delivered in full head but the tonal quality desired is more forceful. I liked how you described being able to 'feel' it in your throat.

Don’t worry about the confusion - music is it’s own kind of complicated math. Music is made up of octaves - each octave contains 7 notes CDEFGAB (the white notes on a piano) as well as the various sharps # and flats b between those noted (the black keys). The octave to the far left on a keyboard is octave 0 and the notes in that octave are designated as C0, D0 and so on until you reach B0 and then octave 1 starts with C1, D1, etc. hope this helps a little ♥️
@lorismith5195
@lorismith5195 2 года назад
The F5 song you asked what song is this is called “See Through”. It’s an original. Like others said, the easiest way to think about it is note placement on a piano. So notes c, d, e, f, g, a, b are an octave. The first (lowest) octave on a piano is 1. The next is 2. So D2 is the D note in the second octave. The higher the number, the farther toward high end of the piano the note is. So D4 is two octaves higher D2. The # is a sharp symbol. A half step higher (so it would be D, D#, E) going up the scale. The smaller “b” is a flat symbol (so going down the scale it would be E, Db, D). All that being said, Mitch has a 6 octave range (42 notes, plus the sharps and flats). It’s ridiculous.

That is the hallmark of a good education, Saucey, it leaves you with just as many ( or more ) questions as it answers. The difference is the questions are more intelligently asked, about different things now. Before it was " is that a octave, a key...what?" Now it's " I don't understand the way the individual notes are written down." Education has happened, you understand that there is a difference between octaves, keys, and notes. Now you ask specific questions about each thing so you get a better understanding of them, individually. So, you asked what the difference between keys and octaves was. I don't know much, and I may be entirely wrong in MY understanding of it, but I'll give it the old college try. It's been mentioned in comments below this one that notes are set up in groups of 8. They start at A and run through G. Each set of notes on a keyboard is noted by a number, 0-7. So, a A0 is the lowest, very first key, on a keyboard and a G7 is the very last key on a keyboard. A key is a set of 24 notes within a given group of keys. Taking A0 as an example you have the A0 itself, you have Ab0, and A#0. ( The "pure" A0, the flat A0 and the sharp A0.) Repeat that for all 8 notes within that given group of notes and you have a key. OCTAVES, though, are what you get when you move from A0 to A1. That is a jump from one set, one group, of notes to another, either higher or lower. In order to know how many octaves a person can cover, like Geoff who has a 5 octave range, you only look at places where they can reach the notes in the entire key. So, Mitch, starting at A1 and moving completely through G6, has a 5 octave range. And, yes, he can reach B7...but, that's only the second note in that octave. I don't know that that's 100% accurate, but that's MY understanding of it all. And, if I'm wrong, someone PLEASE correct me so I'll have a better understanding of it, too. You mentioned, Saucey, that you enjoy checking out vocal coach reactions. I have one I would like you to take a look at, if you ever have the chance. She's only done two reactions to acapella, so far as I know, and it's been one PTX song and one Home Free. However, her breakdown of things she's hearing is SUPER interesting. Great video, as always. Can't wait for the next one!

I just have to say, as a music teacher, there are some great explainations of notes and their relationships to one another here! Just goes to show, music geeks are as enamored with PTX as the rest of the world🙂 The explaination for the same note sounding different to you in different places may be that good vocalists can "color" their tone. There are a lot of different tecniques to do that, but it can make the way a note sounds wildly different to the way it sounds in another song. It's on purpose. It gives a vocal artist a bigger pallete to work with.

A little clarification for you: C is where the octaves start. As others have said, C4 is the note in the center of the piano keyboard. It's a white key just below the total black Keys. (It might help to go to an online keyboard.) The white note next to it is D4. Those are like do (a deer) and re (a drop of golden sun) in the song. That difference is called a whole tone. The black key in between is a half tone away from either-or C or D. it has two names. C sharp (C#) and D flat (Db [but with that funny shape]). If you're going up by half tones, it's C, C#, D, D#, E... If you're going down, it's E, Eb, D, Db, C. So D# and Eb are the same note. There's a rtveason that you call it one or the other but that has to do with scales and musical keys so we'll skip it 'til later. The lowest note on the piano is A0, and a bit above that is B0 then C1. That's down in the Avi, Tim, Geoff, and Matt range. An octave higher is C2. The highest note on the piano is C8, so that C7 whistle note is up in the "plinky" notes on a piano. So you were really close to getting it except for the funky symbols.

You are correct. You figured out the difference between chest and head, as far as where it's coming from. As for the same note sounding different in different clips, it's difficult to tell because depending on the tone and sound (vowel, consonant, etc.) being produced can make the actual note sound different even though it's not. There are many comments explaining the letters and numbers that represent Mitch's range. I will combine all of those comments and say: Letter = Note on the scale Number = Where on the music staff (which octave) # = Sharp note (Ab, A, A#) b = Flat note (Each note on the scale has a half step down - flat, and a half step up - sharp) On a music staff, when reading sheet music, the bottom line is an E4 and the top line is an F5. If I could attach an image it would help more, but even if you've never played an instrument or read sheet music, I'm sure you know what a music staff looks like (it's the lines that the music notes are written on). This gives you a better idea of how large of a range Mitch has if you can visualize that his lowest note is actually 11 steps below the staff (switching to bass clef from treble), and his highest head voice note is one line above the staff. His highest whistle note is 8 lines above the staff. A1 - A2 is an octave. Like Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Si, Do represents an octave (from C4 - C5). So, Mitch's range includes the notes A1, B1, C2 (octaves change on the C), D2, E2, F2, G2, A2, B2, C3, D3, E3, F3, G3, A3, B3, C4, D4, E4, F4, G4, A4, B4, C5, D5, E5, F5, G5, A5, B5, C6, D6, E6, F6, G6, A6, B6, C7, D7, E7, F7, G7, A7, and B7 (with all of the sharps and flats in-between). I don't think I explained all of that as simply as I set out to, but I hope it helps at least a little. lol

Think of notes like a piano. I'm not sure exactly how much you know about music but each set of keys starts on A and ends on G. And each set of notes has a number starting with 1 and moving up to 7. The "b" and # stand for the sharps and flats which on a piano are the black keys. Does feel bad about not knowing about all this, I only learned because of my kids constantly talking about it 😂

You've got to think of the piano scale and goes cdefgab. From c to b is an octave. Mitch has a 6 octave range; or ptx themselves covers the whole piano lol. The black keys, if you hit them as you go up the scale, it's a sharp note and flat as you go down the scale. I think I got that right.

'La La Latch' is still one of their most complicated and cool arrangements to this day. 'Dance of The Sugar Plum Fairy' is their 3rd Grammy win. 'See Through' is their original from their 2014 album. Let me see if I can help you out a bit Saucey. There are 88 keys on a standard piano (52 white and 36 black). There are 7 octives plus 3 keys below the lowest octive. They are numbered starting from the lowest up. Each octive is 7 white and 5 black keys and use letters to identify each one (ABCDEFG). The small b and the # are used to signify flat (b) and sharp (#) notes. So, for instance, Eb5 means the E flat note within the 5th octive. I hope that helps. Love your reactions! 🥰💀🦄🎶

The spot where you asked, "Is that Mitch?", he was singing this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n7NAcK2hu1Y.html One of my favorites in his low range. When you were questioning "was that chest?", on most male singers that would be either head voice (higher than chest), or falsetto. On a countertenor, when they have a much higher range, that's still done in his chest. Some of the songs you're looking for are the official videos for AHA (that's the one they did in Singapore. The next was their mashup of LaLa Latch and then See Through (there's a Singapore clip for that one too). Somewhere out there is a video of Scott watching and reacting to Mitch during their tours.

The letter refers to a single note. The b & # refer to whether the note is a sharp or a flat (think of the black keys on a piano - those are the sharps and flats). The number refers to the octave that the note is found; the lowest note on a piano is an A0, and the highest note is a C7. Mitch is reported to have a six octave vocal range, from A1 to B7. Whether it is true or not is debatable, but it is impressive nonetheless. Also, the reason that some of the same note doesn't sound the same is because it is often dependent on either the key that the song is being sung in, or the accompaniment with it. For example, if there is just Mitch and Avi singing predominantly, you ear perceives the note Mitch is singing as higher because of the extreme low that is accompanying it. Whereas, if it is Mitch and Kirstin singing predominantly, your ear will perceive it lower because there isn't as much separation between the two notes they are singing. The way that they are able to determine what the note is, is to compare it to the same note on a piano or other tuning instrument.

So, I am no music expert , but I did take piano lessons many years ago. If you check out an 88-key piano or keyboard, the lowest octave is on the left and would be octave 1, then 2, and they get higher as they go. The notes are A-G and repeat in each octave. On a piano, the black keys are sharps # and flats (looks like little b). They are notes in between the letters and sound s little different. But this is the easist way I can think to make sense of the letters and numbers that represent the notes. Hope this makes a little sense. PTX cover of Take on Me (audio only) is a great exhibit of Mitch's extensive range in one song. You should check it out! Always enjoy your reactions!

A-G are the notes (think repeating sections on a piano keyboard), 1-7 are the octaves (how high or low = up or down the piano keyboard). # is sharp and ♭ is flat - so the black keys on the piano, sharp is one up from the base note (A-G) and flat is one down from the note (semitones) The notes may sound differently because of where the note is being sung (head/chest/mix) and the breath technique

I don't have a ton of knowledge on this and I am sure that someone else will be able to help more. However, C4 is middle C. If you are reading music it is the note above the bass staff and below the treble staff. C5 is an octave above that. # means the note is the sharp. C#5= the C sharp in the octave above middle C. The "b" is the flat. Eb5 = the E flat in the octave above middle C. Now back to video. Love your reactions!

Each octave starts with C, so starting in the middle of the piano, it is C4 D4 E4 F4 G4 A4 B4 C5 D5 ... The sharp (#) is half a note up and flat (italic b) is half a note down, and both of those are the black keys on the piano.
