Saucey Reacts | Pentatonix - Recording Of Evergreen | This Is Mesmerizing!! 

I have a masters degree in music. Having studied voice, the thing that is most incredible to me is how very difficult these phrases are to sing. But here they are, repeating them over and over. Their vocal stamina is almost inhuman. Also THIS is why they are so reliable onstage.

Ben Bram is often referred to as the "sixth member" of Pentatonix. He's so talented.

I just love how one of them says maybe try doing this, whatever it is, and they barely explain it, they literally say a 3 or 4 word sentence but the other person gets it immediatly and excecutes it so easily, like breathing. it will forever blow my mind

I'm so glad you recognized Mitch's contribution. Scott, Kevin, Ben (and Avi) get their recognition... but Kevin has said that Mitch has some of the best musical instincts he's ever come across. And remember that Mitch is the only one that never had any form of Music Theory or college-level classes and advanced training.

when i saw them live, they split the audience into five sections for i saw three ships and taught us each one part of the body percussion to do throughout the song. it was fun audience participation and made it so they can just sing!

I went to a concert for this tour right before Christmas, They did use instruments on 3 or 4 songs, like cello and violin for Over The River. Drums on one of them. Cello and piano for Thank you. Guitar for Evergreen. They said they had reached a point that on occasion they wanted to be able to add something they love to songs. Scott even made a joke in response to how horrified some people were that they actually did some with instruments, lol that every time they used an instrument, an a Cappella group broke up. They sounded amazing and knowing they did it because they wanted to is just fine with me. They don't have to prove anything.

Kirstie and scott have both said in several interviews that if they need help with staying in pitch while singing live , they usually listen to mitch as he is the one that stays in the right pitch.

The technique of saying - n’earth - is a choir technique. It is difficult to sing ‘on earth’ keeping each word separate.

I love how Scott sings with his arms and hands. So expressive.

PTX did a 1.5 hour film documenting one of their US tours. It shows the behind the scenes view of what it's like to travel all over the country performing a tour while also recording their original album (they had a recording studio in one of their tour buses). If you like this short film, you would LOVE the documentary. Some reactors reacted to it in portions, others just watched it on their own time. It's called "Pentatonix - On My Way Home" documentary.

That was 'I Saw 3 Ships'. They use looped recording of body percussion whenever they do this song live. There's a lot of videos of them doing it live from their concerts and from their TV appearances. Check them out, it's so impressive.

The body percussion during live shows is performed by audience participation. I went to see them on their Evergreen tour and it was amazing.

Another great word for them is CREATIVE. All that they're doing is known to every musician and song writer BUT they are soooo creative that they take everything to the next level and their little " touches" are so amazing!! This aspect makes them very, very special. It separates the unicorns from the horses, if you will. 🦄🦄🦄🦄🦄

I just love seeing how collaborative and not ego-driven they all are. Whatever works best for their music is what happens! You might also enjoy their documentary film “Pentatonix: On My Way Home” about their 2015 tour (still with Avi). It’s for rent or purchase on RU-vid and is longer, so maybe not for a reaction, but for your enjoyment. Shows a lot of the collaborating and behind the scenes stuff, and the crazy amount of time they spend on touring while also recording new songs at the same time.

If you ever get around to watching any of the interview vids they've done over the years, any time they're asked who the best singer in the group is, they all say Mitch, or who would they want to switch with for a day, it's Mitch, or who has the most technique and control of music, it's Mitch. Mitch is just an Alien that can do things with his voice without having to put too much thought into it and it comes out magical every time...and he is technically sound! 💜💜

Re the click on their in-ears: during their 2018 ptxperience, Scott lost everything on his in-ear and explained just what they hear and how important that equipment is to their performance.

Hi so the short time turn around is because they simply were not sure they would be able to do a Christmas tour because of Pandemic. Once they decided they could do at least a 17 city Christmas tour, they had to rush the recording to get it ready in time, book the venues , rehearse the tour show, they also did many Christmas Television events for this album as well After having to cancel their world tour in support of the Lucky Ones , they were so so excited to perform again. The Christmas tour for this album was so joyous as they were so happy to be back at work.

You’ve actually done four songs from the Evergreen album. I just called to say I love you, My Heart with You, The prayeR and Over The River. I just rewatched them last night. Would love to see a rewatch after watching the recording of these songs. Since you were so new to them at the time. I’m guessing you’d appreciate the songs even more now. Their attention to detail and perfectionism is why they’re the number one a cappella group. Not to mention how well they work together and listen to each other’s suggestions. Fun fact Clark Beckham and Ben Platt have a video doing Pentatonix’s original song Can’t Sleep Love. Its so .good. You saw Ptx do it during their popspring performance.

The last song was "I Saw Three Ships". What I find amazing, is the attention to detail in the "Over the River" segment....and it was all background. I believe they use some backing tracks when performing live. I have seen live performances of "I Saw Three Ships", and while they start off doing the body percussions, they stop them when they start singing. They still do it all, they just pre-record some of it. Even back in the Avi days, he said they often put some extra ear candy in the recordings that they did not do live. I love this video so much. And the support unicorn is precious!

yay! thank you so much Lori for requesting this one; been waiting for it forever haha my favorite part of this video is how effortlessly they collaborate and work together. I love how Mitch or Kevin or Matt will suggest something and then they just do it. no egos, no judgments, just mutual respect. I also love how much they all really admire each other's talents and hype each other up. it's so freaking wholesome! They turned that song 3 ships into crowd participation, but also there is a backing track used in order to give the full experience to the audience. They do use backing tracks on a few of the newest songs. Yes they are acapella, but they're also human (contrary to popular belief). I think they would rather have the audiences experience be more epic, and I can appreciate that. I truly love how they are evolving with their music. Thanks for finally getting to this one! 🙏🏾❤️😁

There is an old interview somewhere in the "PTX complimenting Mitch" compilation where Kevin says that Mitch's musical intuition is so strong. I think that's what you see and comment on here. I can't agree more. Just mind blowing talent.

I saw three ships is my favorite Christmas song they've done, as far as the thought that went into it, by far. They do some looping I think with that part. SJ is the cutest ❤️

Homophonic means they are all singing words at the same time. Oh, what a lovely crochet unicorn! I wish they could have known in advance that the Prayer would be pure magic. Now we basically get just the beginning and the end of the process, because the videographer Ben Hausdorff was not there on all days. It's interesting that is seems like Scott is all "why don't we have Mitch be all Celine Dion and I could be Andrea Bocelli" and everyone just nods. Some of the songs on the Lucky Ones album have a more produced sound, and I have been wondering if they'll have very different arrangement on the stage or if they just won't do, for example, Anchor live. The studio mix has at least three Mitchs and the backing vocals have had something done to them to make them sound more like dripping water.

It wasn't an hour, just 36 minutes. But worth every one. Their talent is off the scale. They do play instruments on a few songs, but for the most part they are A Capella.

Pentatonix has a 30-day online class on a cappella and vocal arrangement. They say it takes 5-10 hours a week although it seems to take more if you do the homework where you personally arrange 2 songs of your choosing. It costs a couple hundred dollars.

I'm glad you enjoyed this one! To me all of their behind the scenes videos are absolutely fascinating. I love seeing their dynamic together. As a little add on to this video, if you wanted to see it on your own time, check out Pentatonix's Tiktok page. There is a video of Scott making an entire artificial choir by himself. They needed a choir for a part of the song It Came Upon a Midnight Clear but the album was literally due the next day, so Scott just sang all the parts himself and edited them together. Lucky for us Scott filmed himself doing it, and edited it down into a Tiktok. It's incredibly impressive and, because it's Scott, rather funny as well.

Look at all the microphones placed around where they are recording the percussion sounds. Some are even in buckets. This adds to the types of sounds they can utilize when mixing the final edit.

Ben is the original Pentaholic. He was the arranger on the Sing Off when PTX won. He stayed with them and has been the silent 6th member ever since. We Sauceytrons knew you would enjoy this behind the scenes video. Just a little side note- Mitch was also in post production for his Album Roses during this filming which is why he wasn’t there at the last bit for creating the sounds to We Saw Three Ships. Ben Bram has been their arranger since the beginning. Their arrangement process is usually very collaborative as you see in the video - which I think is super cool. Everyone gets a chance to give input and make suggestions. Ben went to college with Scott, and was the one who suggested they audition. Also, another bit of trivia, the cameraman is Ben Hausdorff - Kirstie’s fiancée.

I am so thrilled that you did this. I have watched it so many times and absolutely love it. Your reactions are just what I go through every time I watch it. Love love love your reactions. For a long time I have felt like their friendships and respect for each other and the fact that they absolutely love what they are doing makes their talents stand out even more. Look at how many times they recorded that one sentence (Over the River and through the woods) just to make sure they could select the right final version to fit the sound they wanted.

The chances of this group coming together was so infinitesimally small that only the powers that be in the universe could have made it happen. I’m glad they decided to do that to allow us mere mortals to have something to brighten our days. Three kids meet as children who love to sing and decide to keep singing together in school and local theater. As a side note, can you imagine trying to keep those three reigned in in high school choir? Scott, Mitch and Kirstie say that she did help them learn to blend better. They become life-long friends. Scott befriends Ben Bram who helps Scott get on The Sing Off. Ben introduces Scott to Avi. Scott talks Kevin into giving up med school at Yale and joining four strangers to compete on The Sing Off. They actually win the show. Sony drops them so they decide to start building their Pentaholic following on You Tube. Viral videos, and great music follows, and they get resigned to Sony. Avi decides to leave the group and they find another great bass in Matt. While Matt is not Avi, he is still excellent and I think he blends even better with the other members of PTX. If anything happens differently along that path Pentatonix does not exist, and the world is a lesser place.

DUDE. Slappy Jr is amazing! How cool is that? And this was a great watch; really enjoyed it.

The sound effects were accomplished live for I Saw Three Ships by splitting the audience into groups to do the handclaps, finger snapping etc. for them. The recording of the song uses the percussion you just heard. Kevin, the percussion genius trying to teach Scott was hilarious.

I heard a live performance version of "I saw three ships", where they asked the audience to make sounds for them...this section snaps fingers, this section rubs their hands together, etc. It really sounded great !!

They do I Saw Three Ships live, but they use a claptrack as well as audience participation. And yes, they also use the clicktrack that you were talking about to make sure they're on time. it's the equivalent of using a metronome.

On the whole "How do they do that?" thing, have you reacted to White Winter Hymnal?, Lots of body percussion and a vid at the end showing them rehearsing it.

They do have instruments once in awhile but if they do it will be shown on the video and on stage.

On The Ships song, they play the beginning with them each doing their assigned activity and then once they all start singing it's looped. At the concert they all take a section of the Audience and get them involved and give them and activity to do at a certain part in the song, its a fun part of the concert.

When they do " I saw three ships" they actually have the audience participate to keep the sound going(and of course we do)😂 there is also a whole other part to this video that continues some of the process and how they prepare for on stage choreography. Can't wait for them to come back to Maine this Xmas for you to see their Xmas show.
