😂😂😂😂 that is the truth. I'm 69 years old. I refuse to let mechanics work on my truck. I do my own work because mechanics lie and do anything to get your money. I took my truck in for a biannual inspection. They tried to tell me that my ball joints needed replaced. I told they were lying. Then they told that they looked again and it just needed grease. 😂 Of course I knew that was a lie also.
@@Deadcntr you can't just say mechanic's lie and do anything for a dollar. I been doing it for 40 years and there's more honest mechanics than dishonest. I've also seen some customers lie or fail to pay their bill also.. You just can't lump a whole group of people in a certain field as dishonest. Mechanics that lie aren't professional techs and won't keep a job for long!
@@iridium8341no one, I was being cynical. Modern vehicles have become difficult and expensive to repair much like electronic device where you just have to replace them. Good for the manufacturer not so good for the consumer. 🙁
As a certified master auto tech with 40 years in the auto repair field I approve of this message...most fuel pumps can be replaced with just a new pump and reuse the canister and sending unit for the gas gauge..you can save hundreds of dollars or rubles 👈👍
Also an ASE certified master tech here. I agree; Lars is correct on this. Of course, be extra careful of electrical connections; sparks and gasoline vapors should only mix in the combustion chamber!
@RF-et2kv yeah when the pump gets old it starts drawing too much amperage thus melting wire connections and connecter pins once this happens due to high resistance it pulls even more current. Seen a lot of burned pins and connections but never seen it cause a fire yet. I had one car hit by lighting killing the ECM and a few other circuits once I had a new ECM it still wouldn't start! I check fuel pressure found zero pressure, checked the wiring to the pump all looked good. pump was getting power and had a ground at the last connection so it had everything to work. I dropped the tank and inspected the fuel pump and found all the wiring in the fuel pump canister burnt to a crisp.. still didn't cause a fire but the pump was dead meat!
Good Move there Lars, I fix everything I own and fuel pumps are a sore subject with me, especially IN TANK units, I came to pretty much the same conclusion as you, saved a lot of money too, Great video and will probably Help many people.
@@haywoodyoudome FALSE statement. I purchased 3 and 1 is still running after 3 yrs. Why did you choose to be a nameless coward pretend human with zero credibility? Fear?
Did this with my KTM dirt bike in tank fuel filter. KTM kit was AU$110.00. The filter was a MAHLE brand. Put the part number into the internet and AU$5.00 delivered. Good video .. there is so many things you can use this trick for and save big. Cheers
By the way, how`s that horse doing? Planning on bringing it home for the summer? Actually I would have went with dropping the tank, doing the swap out then reassembly. I switched back to bicycle in `04 and haven`t bought an ounce of gas since.. I live in the Rockies. Every day is awesome. Best wishes keep safe.👍
Great video! If the fuel gauge isn't working, you can try pulling the unit and cleaning the contacts on the wiper with a pencil eraser. Are you planning on going back to the Gulag this season? Take care and happy hunting!
I worked at an Independant german auto repair shop and if the sending unit worked still we soldered in a new pump and went to radio shack to get resistors and such for blowed data screens
At one time probably before the internet landrovers were good. As a landrover owner I can tell you almost everything is wrongly engineered on a land rover. I had to order wiper arms from the previous (10-15 year old) version of the Discovery to allow it to use normal wiper blades. They call this an "upgrade" 🤣. To replace a headlight you have to remove the whole front grill! Part of the radiator is abs plastic and will fail after time if exposed to heat and pressure. 🤪 My 2003 discovery has the turning radius of a city bus... if its a 3 point turn in my Tacoma on a small dead-end logging road it will be a 16 point turn with the Discovery. I tell everyone never ever buy Landrover. 😮
You did the right thing by cutting a hole in the floor. Just make sure you seal it upright but yeah the internet's good. You can find out whatever you need to do. Good stuff. Let us know how it goes 👍👍🙂🇨🇦
That made me think I wish you could repair my lawn mower. Then I thought, Wait a minute do you have a lawn? You have woods and so forth but I don't remember if your place has a lawn or not.
Lars, I recently replaced my fuel pump unit too in my Land Rover Discovery, twice. The first time I did like you and replaced just the pump motor but it still would not run. The second time I got frustrated and replaced the whole thing. It turned out the fuel pump was not even the problem, but hey, now I have a spare. What I like about the discovery is the inspection hatch above the gas tank. I do not have to drop the tank to replace the pump or cut a hole in the floor.
Lars does a cost saving repair on old rover. Old time cars spare parts are rarely on the market. Have a nice time in the forest with bear dog. God bless you.
I grew up most of my life in the midwest and dropping the tank on a rusty Chevy truck was not fun. More than a few times we cut an access hatch in the bed to get to the pump.
At my job, we found it easier to unbolt the bed of the truck and lift & move it back a little ways (12-18"), then just rest it on the rear tires and frame to access the pump Of course, you needed 6 or 8 able-bodied people to lift it, but it was a surprisingly simple job; 8 fasteners and a couple of electrical connections as I recall.
Excellent. Ive had since new a 2000 Volvo XC that quit last year because of the fuel pump. They stopped making the OEM unit years back, so I need to pull it and fix myself. Havent done it yet, but this gives me a great road map to work from. Thanks!
Yes that's a great way to fix your fuel pump often it's the pump or the screen or you've let the car run low on fuel causing the fuel pump to overheat because it's actually cooled to buy the fuel! sounds crazy but it is. Looks very much like a GM AC Delco Style fuel pump assembly.
F.Y.I GUY ,ALL CARS AND TRUCKS MUST DROP THEIR TANKS , UNLESS THERE IS A ACCESS PANEL , JUST SO YOU KNOW I HAVEN'T RUN INTO ANY YET, '' ACCESS PANELS '' BLAH, BLAH, BLAH ! ! ! ! ! !
Not true some do have access to remove the fuel pump module ..under the rear seat or trunk.. Ford Chevy Buick and imports..not all but in some models you will have a hatch to gain access to the unit..always check a repair manual for info
The fumes are sealed in by the fuel pump module. Vapor control is something manufacturers have been diligent about for decades, as free vapors count as emissions. That's why you get a check engine light if you leave your gas cap loose.
@@dennisobrien3618 you and @SurvivalRussia are correct! The fuel system is a sealed unit and it has a vapor recovery system to vent fumes into a charcoal canister..also known as the EVAP system!
