Great info… I’d have dug up and thrown the whole thing out, not knowing any better 😂😂 I like the way you filmed this- nice and close so we can really see what you’re doing, so helpful! Nancy, in an earlier video of yours with Coleus I told you I was trying to make a coleus topiary and you said you might try… please do!! … and take us along, they are gorgeous from what I have seen. All I have right now is a straight stem about 4” long with some new leaves coming off the top rooting in a glass of water. Thank you Brenda 🇨🇦ZN4

My mom passed away 3 years ago and long story short, her garden was overgrown with tree roots, lily of the freaking valley and ants...omg, the ants😮. I raked it all in the early spring and saw little hostas poking out. She planted them about 20 years ago. They stopped growing at around one inch. I knew it was bad, but they were so bound by the tree roots I dont know how they survived. So I found your video, did what you did and I have about 50 individual ones, in clumps of 1 to 3, a few 4's. I can't tell you how happy I was to be able to save them! Most seem to be OK but some have weird, bumpy, hard, hairy things...I think it's crown rot but it's not mushy, its very hard and there's green bumps that might be leaves or roots? I wish I could send a picture...I am wondering if I should cut that off? And when you say "compost" is that fertilizer or your own compost or soil ? Sorry, I never know. I love the water too BTW, I laughed at that😊

Sorry to hear about your mom. Remove the mushy parts. Hostas tend to die out in the middle and you are left with the young ones that grow around it. I buy compost bags or cow manure. Hostas are very hardy. I am glad you are able to save them. They are special because your mom planted them. I have Instagram. You can send me a picture if you want. Thank you for watching😊

Oh my, I had no idea one could rinse and manipulate them like that. My hubs and I moved some large ones last spring and I thought I had to keep as much soil as possible on them. They were soooo heavy it ‘ bout killed us! So to transplant, can they be rinsed off just like you showed? We have bags of composed manure here, is that the same as what you call compost? Great info!! Yes, you can rinse when transplanting if you want. Interesting you mentioned manure, sometimes I use cow manure if I run out of compost. Yes, composed manure should be fine.😊
