Saving a VIT K100 Kenworth. IS IT TOO FAR GONE?

My favorite tv show growing up was BJ and the Bear. The Iconic red and white VIT K100 was the star of the show. Should I buy and save this K100 and build my very own BJ and the Bear K100? I think I should try, we could call it MC and the Bear.

I am one that drove in the 70's and 80's and can tell you I hated the cabover as a driver, Now they look cool from outside but dealing with doghouse when you are trying to get up and change clothes was a pain. When I got into my first w900 the coast to coast runs became a joy and made me hate the cabover even more. Now when I see one restored it brings back memories and not all of them are good not like seeing a restored 379 or w900 or the classic freightliner. Just my thoughts of being a driver back in the cabover days.

Frame is a little too rusted, find out how much the rails are. It's doable, you will have a winter project for two winters at least. It will not be cheap, but it will be nice. Best wishes.

No doubt. Have to watch again, but the frame seemed pretty rough. Get a cheap southern kw and switch tops. Combine the best of both.

Mike, in case you haven't noticed, you have a whopping 100,000 views in only 2 weeks for your 1988 K100 Kenworth VIT video. Wow! This video is a true inspiration. Your tone is right on. Perfect balance of "you are there", discovery enthusiasm and gee whiz goofiness. The fact that you don't know everything is real. A humanity and spirit we all relate to. As you say, anyone can enjoy this, but for those of us who were either born in, or grew up in the 1970s, this video captures and celebrates that golden age in trucks. The BJ & The Bear truck idea is fantastic. Fact that none of your other videos comes close to the number of views should tell you to keep at this one. Show us more. Does not matter if someone wants to call you on the logic of buying this K100. Who cares? You are embracing every guy's mid-life crisis! Unapologetically too! Keep up the good work. We all want to see your K100 dream project happen. Your wife may not totally understand your attraction to that K100, but she sees how happy it makes you. That is priceless. Life is short. Restore that K100 in your colours -- red, black and white, not blue.

Thank you for the kind words. I did worry about what people would think of a Peterbilt guy buying a KW but I truly love this truck and what it represents. Having my dad and brother there was the icing on the cake. I'm proud of our trucking history and what trucking has provided our family over the years. 🙏🏼

Hi, just started the show. Can't wait to finish it but...., well..., it's an Aerodyne!!. Not a VIT roof. VIT stood for " Very Important Truck", to the best of my knowledge referring to the deluxe, diamond tuck upholstery. Hope you buy it and build it. Aerodyne cabs, or sleepers on a conventional were and still are the best looking sleepers ever installed on or behind a cab. My opinion. All the best, James. Now, back to the show

I drove a K 100 with a 500hp Detroit and 12 speed Allison for a about a month in between jobs in the 70's. It was OK but my favorite was the double bunk Freightliner and Pete cabovers back then. Never drove the Pete but did the Freightliner which I liked a lot for it's dash layout and how cool it looked.

This will be my first Cabover, but am excited to build it up to #57, from Harris Transportation from Victorville, CA. If you are not pulling heavy loads with it that amount of flaking rust should not be an issue Plenty of original parent metal left. However if it’s double framed and there’s rust jacking between the frame rails then it is another issue Hope you have deep pockets. Will be a fun and challenging project regardless.

So buy that Pete coe in the end, and have a friend buy the K100 and you can both work on your trucks at the same time. Make that friend someone with a huge shop to work in. Overhaul that big cam, it will be more dependable than any of the post emissions stuff.

You remind me of when I was 15 and we pulled that old Chevy truck out of the fence-row...and buddy she was rough lol. I had big dreams of restoring it...took a whole summer and all my money but we got her running and driving. After two years, countless breakdowns, having to walk home all the time (before Cell phones and uber existed), we drove it back to its spot in the fence-row sometime back in 85. It's still sitting in the same spot! Wish you luck if you buy her!
@Pteparts69
@Pteparts69 3 года назад
She definitely needs some TLC and a good sandblasting on the frame to see how bad the rust got. In terms of the cab, paint stripping, trim and interior removal will be pretty much the only way to see how much it’s going to cost on. On the plus side, pressure in the rad means you don’t have a leaky coolant system. In terms of electrical on it, since it’s such a simple truck, you’ll ultimately spend less time doing an entire re-wire than you would trying to patch and troubleshoot down the line. If you’re going to have the cab gutted already and off the frame, then it’s well worth the time up front
@sdudley11
@sdudley11 3 года назад
Steven Feser that Frame is a way too rusted to be worth trying to save it, that could be the reason why the truck was park in the first place because the owners of it didn't want to put the time and money into it anymore so they just sold it and then it was park for how ever long. IF he was smart he would just go out and get a newer back clip off of a truck and put it on his over trying to fixed that rusted frame which probably cost more money to fix it anyway so he just better off and get a new less rusted frame and put it on it

As a truck guy myself,if it were closer to me on the east coast,I'd be tempted to buy it. A K-100 Aerodyne rwith the VIT interior,as evidenced by the button tucked interior, and tilt-telescope steering wheel, hard to find,,the rusted frame is a concern definitely, as well as the JB Weld repair on the axle could be a destroyed differential, but the cab,wiring,engine,and tranny,would definitely be worth grabbing ahold of!! I was getting ready to post,for you to look on the door for the build stickers,which you found at the 30 min mark,,it ain't a Pete,but it's a good starting point for your own red and white BJ McKay K-100!! Now I'm gonna subscribe too your channel, to follow up on your adventures !! 48 years as an over the road truck driver,this is Leadfoot back at ya, 7s and 3s,8s and 6s ,you have yourself a good day today,and a better day tomorrow, catch you on the flip flops!!

Go for it! It will cost a small fortune to restore but vlog every step and you'll find the backing to make it worthwhile. Cut the frame and add newer rear end clip and stretch to 260" W.B. Air ride front axle while you are at it! Then keep the look as period correct to factory as possible. No snow plow front bumper or turret visor, 5 inch exhaust. Having done one of these projects, on a T-800. What scares me is all that rust on the frame, and the large chunks that came off the rear-end housing. And its got animals (mice) in it. So all that interior likely will smell like mouse piss. I think you're in over your head on this truck. My vote is its either a parts truck or take a pass on this one.

the k100 is an arodyne roof with v.i.t. interior. these trucks are very rare and not many for sale . so depending on price, if u didn't want u could resale it. and in the 1970s international had the transtar II and the 1980s they had the 9670. so IH didn't have a TV or movie truck, they were the most plentiful truck on the road. As a retired OTR driver and a big fan of cabovers ( drove them for over 35 years ) I’d say buy it ! On the practical side if you get it cheap enough most of the things that’s needed is manpower and time and perhaps a few bucks and you have a plan like pulling a 5th wheel camper and retiring I’d say buy it ! Worse comes to worse you could part it out and maybe make some money ! It’s a WIN WIN situation in my mind !

Truck id should be just behind drivers door inside,aswell as on the drivers door. Not quite right for bj and the bear, a bit too new with square headlamps and different air fairing, but almost there,

Hands down my favorite truck. I loved the raised roof cabovers. I drove for jb hunt when they had the flat floor units. They were so good. Trucking was still good at the time, at least I was still having fun. I haven’t driven a truck in probably 15 years and I still kind of miss it. If I could have one of these if probably hit the road as an owner for a couple years just because.

I say DO IT! If nothing else, you get it to start n move itself, even just lot drive in low gear, you've definitely made it something you wouldn't lose on. Actually looks like interior pretty complete, just a helluva cleaning job. I'd say frame condition your biggest concern really, as it looks like half a day n she'd fire up. Lol, with that short wheelbase, be an interesting ride!

It has the set back front axle, a little less desirable, if you can get it right buy it, $3000.

That k100 was originally a 13 speed according to the plate on the door. It was probably swapped for a 18 speed later.

@@mikethetrucknut gray splitter does mean 18 speed or super 10. It's an 18 speed knob as it has a range selector+gray splitter. I can almost garrentee you mid-late 90's a 18 was swapped into it.
