After about 5 weeks of following the advice on this video, I'm happy to report that both my Sago Palms are in great shape with new foliage - probably the best looking Sago Palms in the neighborhood.

I started cutting before watching this video but I wanted to make sure I didn't do it any damage so this video was very helpful!

Thank goodness, my neighbor/ brother-in-law, kept saying, “just put a match to it! It’s dead!” Mine has seven pup plants with it. Well I trimmed it totally back, low and behold, I see new growth on all the plants. Can’t wait for my neighbor to see it. Lol

Short, sweet and very helpful. We went through a freeze here in Georgia in December. I wasn't sure what to do with the palm or if it was still alive. This was very, very helpful. Thank you!

Great video. I just trimmed mine exactly like you did. They always put out beautiful new fronds.

Thank you! I was terrified to cut our Sago but it looks so sad the way it is now. It has three green fronds but all the others are light brown. I guess I will just leave the green ones and trim off the others.

I live in San Antonio area as well. Cut the sago palms in April now I am seeing a lot of pups coming out from the root but no sprouting from the main stalk. Does this mean the main tree is dead? If so, how long should I wait before removing the main stalk and hopefully replant the pups?

Don't dig up the Sago just yet. Odds are, it is still alive. i would wait at least a year. pups sprout up from healthey sago palms as well so that doesn't mean it is dead. you can definitely dig those up and replant/sell them.

The sykes plant in my home garden has been planted for more than 13 years. It sends leaves twice a year, but in the last two years, the leaves were sent only once, and in the last year the leaves did not grow and for the two stages, knowing that I fertilize them with organic fertilizer in the winter

Fertilize in the spring and use fish fertilizer it works for me, also I don’t think he should’ve cut all the plant leaves, I believe he should’ve left a few leaves to help the plant photosynthesize and grow the new leaves

So the idea is to cut every single brown leaf until its bald? How long before it looks like it did before the freeze?
@timpaone5443
@timpaone5443 3 года назад
By the end of summer. You should have 2-3 rows of leaves. Also don’t fertilize until June July. The trees plants need time to heal

Great video! What do you do if there is still a bit green on the stems?
@TheHandyTherapist
@TheHandyTherapist 3 года назад
If most of the leaf is brown, I would cut it off completely. Some of that comes to down to preference. I personally cut off the leaves that are brown and just keep the ones that are green. I think it looks cleaner.

After I clipped my palm once summer came I’m still waiting on the tree to sprout. The crown seems stunned or but there’s a small baby leaf at the bottom that is still green tho…I’m lost 😞

I live in the UK (south of England) and mine is in a pot. We had -8 at night, snow and ice etc before Christmas. When it's warmer, I will try this. I thought it had died! If it's planted in the ground here, will it survive better do you think?

I need help! So I have a sago palm in the front of my house but we had the freeze In February so it looked exactly like the one in the video after. Well I’m not a plant person at all so I thought it was dead, & my husband also kept saying it was dead. Well today I noticed the branches leaning down so I pulled & they came right off. Does that mean it’s dead?? If I would’ve known 4 months ago I could’ve saved it I would’ve cut the branches off then 😭 I feel bad. I hove hope for it but idk.

When would you recommend cutting off the dead leaves? What season?

I have two Sago Palms in my yard, they have been there over 5 years. A couple of weeks after the freeze, I trimmed all the fronds off both of them. One has come back very well. The other, has only produced pups and has not come back yet but it is still firm in the middle. Is there a chance it will still come back this summer? I would not think it would produce pups if it was not still alive. Any advise would be appreciated.

I have 6 sago palms and one of them has just barely started producing new leaves this week, while the other's leaves are fully grown. Each plant has it's own timing. If you like the plant, i would continue to wait it out. Odds are it will come back, especially since it is producing pups.

same here, have had mine for 15yrs and as of today all I see are 3-4 strong pups--nothing from 4ft stumps--maybe couple more months...

can mulching help protect them from the cold?
@TheHandyTherapist
@TheHandyTherapist 3 года назад
Yes, somewhat. it wouldn't be able to support the leave tho so they would still freeze and turn brown/gold. Similar to other plants, you could put a blanket or tarp over the plant and add some Christmas lights (not LED) to help keep it in a warmer environment when you know a freeze is coming.

I tried cutting some but they looked juicy and practically a little bloody, should I wait longer because that means the brown leaves still have nutrients? It's already got long green leaves sprouting from the top
@TheHandyTherapist
@TheHandyTherapist 3 года назад
It should pull all the nutrients within a few days of the freeze. If they are brown you can cut them off. If new green sprouts are coming out already the old stuff can be cut out.

Could the sago palm been saved if burlap would of been wrapped around the tree?
@TheHandyTherapist

It can help if it’s not too cold for too long. In my case, it was below freezing for days.
