In this video, I talk about saving stock flower seeds. Saving your own seeds is a great skill to have for your garden. This skill can save you money,, as you don't need to purchase seeds from a store . The seeds retain information that will aid the the new plant it produces to have much better success in your garden and growing environment. Please note when i say hold I mean to get 100 % germination, but the seed can be viable up to 10 yrs if properly stored. Hope you like this video.

Savings seeds is very important especially with certain seeds being sold out. Plus the odds that one saved seed pod can potentially give you 14 new plants next year is amazing.

So happy to find this video this morning! Thank you for your great demonstration of how to save the stock seeds. As you know I save seeds too but I'm too lazy to break the pods open one at a time I wrap netting around the seeds before their totally dry and the birds can't get to them that way or at least not as easily and when totally dry I just cut the whole flower stock seedstock off of the plant leaving everything inside the netting and I just bend it crunch it smash it and everything breaks open and I just shake the little seeds out

This is our first year growing stock, my son chose a pot from a local garden center (NJ zone 7b) and I'm starting to see the pods sort of forming, the plant is still very green so I'll have to watch it- do you know roughly how long it takes from green pods to brown? I don't want to miss it. Stock smells SO GOOD I like it for a window plant 💚💜 The part about the memory of the plants was so good to learn, that it will produce seed that will thrive in that position. Thank you!!!
@ltlbnsgarden
@ltlbnsgarden 3 года назад
Hi yes, it should be about 2 weeks. I say harvest one pod you think is ready if the seeds are still green wait one more week, if they are black or dark brown then they are ready for harvest. Please make sure to let the seeds completely dry on your counter prior to storing them away 😊

Thank you so much for the detailed demo on collecting seeds from the stock plant. My stock plant is not doing well, all its leaves are wilted and slowly turning yellow. I bought that in early spring. It was fine for a month or two. Later, shredding most of its leaves. Also, the blooming is decreased. I water the plant when the topsoil and an inch below it are dry. There are no pests or any diseases. Can you please guide me with some information, how to recover the plant.
@ltlbnsgarden
@ltlbnsgarden 3 года назад
Hi it may just be done for the season if your seed pods are forming. That is how mine get too. The seed pods are ready when they turn a bit brown. I would say harvest one pod first, if it is green then the other pods need more time. If the seed is black or dark brown they are ready for harvest. Make sure to let the seeds dry out completely on a counter, before you store them away. Hope this helped 😊

Thankyou so much for your informative and excellent video. It helped me a lot as I wasn’t sure my seeds were alive but they look exactly like yours so hopefully they are fine🥰. I’m in the U.K. and I love stock flowers and the beautiful scent on a damp summer evening is heaven- unfortunately the slugs and snails love them too so I’ve taken to planting them in hanging baskets. The damn earwigs still find them, the little blighters (bane of my gardening life!!!😡😆), but they’re safer than in the ground or in pots!!! I go slug and snail hunting at night through the summer and collect them and put them on my front lawn hoping that the hedgehogs and first birds of the morning get them! I won’t kill them and slug killer is killing our little hedgehogs and birds which I want to protect, so I would NEVER use that. Any ideas to dissuade earwigs would be really gratefully received! I go round collecting them in a jam jar at night and put them out the front with the slugs and snails!!!😆 You probably think I’m nuts but I can’t kill things or put chemicals on my garden as there are so many beneficial insects that can be affected and I have 7 little dogs to protect too. Any tips? ☺️🌷🌞🌸🌼🌹

If they were to eat a whole flower then that’d be a pain but better than them eating holes in every leaf and petal!😩 I’ll be out there every night with my jam jar flicking them inside!!!😆 You have to do it really quick or the little blighters drop and disappear into thin air!
