Alabasta’s biggest flaw is that it tries to disguise filler as part of the actual arc, and sabotages its own pacing. Thankfully, future filler is generally self contained.

There is one that is SO MUCH WORSE, after the next big arc. (And right after perhaps the BEST standalone filler.) Because it doesn´t just damage the pacing, it also tries to assassinate some characters. (It was the first time I wanted some of the Straw Hats to drop dead.) As for Alabasta, sure, the pacing is slow. But for me, it somehow fits the theme of crossing the desert. (Though the does mess with the sense of time when things need to speed up.

maybe thats why it bored me like crazy. i had to take a break during this arc and totally forgot what happened when i finally picked it back up after the live action......

@@thomaes751 The Davy Back fight. It was an interesting idea, but overstayed its welcome way too much. And from what I understand, it´s a canon arc, but a big part of that was anime filler that wasn´t in the manga. It´s the prime example of the crew being stupid for things to happen.

I don't know if anyone has said it, but yeah, by "Filler" people mean it's not from the original comic, written by Oda, this was written by the writers at Toei as an original story to put in the show to give a little more space from the comic publishing. These can be fun, but they always have to be inconsequential otherwise they can create even bigger plot holes than they already can create by just trying this idea in the first place.

Making filler that is disguised as part of the story might seem like a great idea on paper, but a lot of the time, it just makes the actual story feel over-extended. Oh well... We get to spend more time with Ace.

The Alabasta filler is odd, cause you do get some genuinely touching moments and lines. Like Vivi's connection with Rasa gives a genuinely good look at what's happened to regular people in Alabasta. There's a few later episodes I kinda like, or at least parts of it. The people writing the anime-only episodes are not incompetent. But man does it kill the pacing something fierce.

I think the hike through the desert (if you remove the filler) is supposed to feel a little bit long, stretched out, and frivourous since we don't really have a real plan, just a kinda loose "lets talk to the rebel leader" idea. But this is cause Vivi is doing everything she can to remove all chance of hardship for anyone but herself which just doesn't work. This earlier part reflects that.

As many comments have pointed out, pretty much all of this is filler, ace isn't even meant to be here anymore, quite annoying, but thankfully filler merging into canon arcs doesn't happen too often after Alabasta. (unless I'm misremembering). (Yes, ik they did it with LRLL later)

The random desert encounters just emphasized thr point that the kingdom is in rough shape since its this dangerous just to go between cities but it does drag a bit. However, kung fu dugong is in my top 10 one piece characters. I just love that weird dude.

Because both the anime and the manga come out every week year-round, the anime has to take steps to keep the show from catching up to the manga. In the early episodes, they did this with a lot of filler. Starting with Water 7, they did away with most of the filler. To compensate, they made the intro song longer, added an opening narration after the intro song (the same opening narration for dozens of episodes), and made the recap longer. Sometimes it can take 6-7 minutes before you get past all of that to the actual episode. But it serves the purpose of keeping the show from catching up with the manga.

There are also lengthen scenes (waiting times), a lot of singular reaction shots (several reactions would be easily covered in a single shot), and additional smaller content (like the two conductors that are having their soap opera theories during the W7). All of them technically filler (from a film-making POV). While fillers are needed with this schedule, most of them seem rather lazy. If it would be about content, they could have made all the cover stories instead of just Buggy's, but then they would have had to come up with new character models and an actual well-put storyboard. Especially considering that they used to do it like today... well, it shows that they aren't good with it, in this case because the team back then couldn't handle the pacing well. Later... DBF... urgh...

I'm really happy you watched it because I feel like Rasa's story puts some things into perspective and makes later scenes hit harder, but overall, filler can ofc meander a bit. I hope it didn't ruin your fun too much :)

3:03 the species "human" is somewhat flexible in this series, sometimes they are just bigger and have unusual features. The in-lore explanation is probably different species (such as fishmen or giants) being ancestors. By contrast, the giant species are 20m tall on average, and no human I'm aware of is even half that height. A few are close.

I really wonder about the LA version of Alabasta...? I hope they construct the Casino IRL vs CG it. As a set piece it would be hella awesome. Aquariums of that size and everything. Buncha locals trying to win Jack Pots while if a table is needed for the filming the people are warned that its fake gambling at the time; so altho they win nothing they lose just as much. Because I think it would make an unbelievable experience to do.

IIRC Alabasta is on by far the biggest island the Strawhats have visited in the Grand Line thus far. It seems the show used the size of it to fit in more random filler moments.

it's not really a big deal, if anything it's a bit of a lull at first, then it ramps up and gets a whole lot better. i'd say there's a couple more episodes that are meh, then it's gonna put the pedal to the metal, kinda like the Sandsurding scene.

I want to say one thing to all the people saying one piece is too Long with its over 1000 episodes.. im just so happy that its Not over yet! And i don’t want it to end.. i don’t want luffy to find the one piece! I just want to keep watching! Every episode is a pleasure. Give me 1000 more please 🥺 i think the day Luffy will be the King of the Pirates will be one of my saddest days in my Life 😢 paradox but true.. (sorry 4 my bad english)

Your analogy to D&D is spot on. Oda has said in the past that Luffy is ultimately in charge of the direction of the story. if Oda writes in a cool idea that he knows Luffy’s character would find interesting then we focus on that and then move on. He is very much like a dungeon master with every move being a throw of the dice with him there to just narrate what happens

Just adding quickly, as im sure others did-- these desert episodes are filler Think of them as "beach episodes" themed around the arc's current setting "Filler" means that This was not included in the source material (manga) and were essentially added in to smooth out the anime's scheduling (one of the weaknesses of having a longrunning, weekly show is that this filler will happen.) You can skip ahead to the destination, or refer to a filler guide, and you it will immediately pick up where things left off plotwise 😊❤

Random filler in the middle of an arc is kind of annoying, but it can be entertaining. It can't move the story forward because it's filler, but they can be entertaining. Episode 101 is an exception, it's a combination of canon and filler. The bird thieves, by the way, are canon.

yea just wait till the "oh no luffy got lost for 40 episodes" because if he wasnt the he could confront the big bad of the arc and the story might end too quick. ironically i just finished a good chunk of episodes that didnt have our main cast in it at all and it was more enjoyable than the bulk of what i have seen in nearly 1000 episodes.... if you know you know i guess. i imagine im not the only one who enjoyed it more than the main stuff

I... Actually enjoyed this filler when I watched it the first time. It was only because I was already caught up to the latest chapters at the 800s and I wanted to spend more time with Ace because I rarely saw him in the manga.😭😭😭

just when they get outta the desert and into civilization is when it gets better, the voyages inbetween just... suck. which is sad because i believe that Toei's animators wanted to give us a reason to want to see this country saved beyond just for Vivi's sake. but in the end, that is all the reason that we need to see Alabasta saved and for us to care about it.

Probably already know this but the episodes in the desert were highly fluffed up by the animators and created instances where the characters had to split up. I think it’s a good filler because you get to see the citizens of Alabasta and you get more of Ace hanging with the crew but it is indeed filler. That’s probably why you were frustrated with how the writing seemed off for some characters and how stupid everyone seems.

I mean in some ways ace being with the gang is filler i think they splited long before like when they were on boat or around that time they thought ace was so cool they kept him for a while d: Fillers be annoying in some ways but it has nice story The thing is i enjoyed sand pirates and rebels but it made it look like Vivy country aint about to collapse in few days 😅

With filler we mean it's not original from the manga! Please, we don't mean actually good word building but bc it's not packed with plot or action people disregard as "filler". And these episodes you're watching are filler, as in they were made by Toei for the anime, they're not part of the actual story.

This whole desert journey has too much filler, and so the Straw Hats are boiled down to their most obvious characteristics. That can get frustrating if you like their more layered personality traits.

They really improve removing filler from canon episodes. They realised they can use 3 frames and extend it across 20 minutes.

Yeah, while i don't care about most filler eps, it was better than stretching eps like crazy. I got bored after a while and stuck to the manga, now i just check some clips on yt.

@@bluelight17 Yea, me too, I dropped the series because it doesn't respect my time. Every few months I'll quickly flick through the episodes, like 30 seconds each to see what happens. That's about the content that in there :(
