I've been a carpenter for 39 years now . I spent 24 of those years framing homes. I never get tired of watching logs being sawn into usable lumber. Im also blessed with having a number of Amish/Mennonite sawmills close by in Lancaster County PA which supply me with rough cut Poplar and Oak. At $0.65/BF for Poplar I can't beat the prices. They had been cheaper during the pandemic @ $0.55/ BF go figure. When the big commercial mills were shut down which created that spike in lumber prices. People were sitting at home making babies and doing home improvement projects. I use Poplar for board and batten siding, rough framing and it's my go to utility wood. I just bought $2k worth of it for a shed and other uses. Poplar is straight grained, it works well with tools and it takes paint and stain exceptionally well . For the money I can't beat it.
Mark, sometimes I watch some of your older videos and when I see a new one like this it is very noticeable how much more of an expert you are now. Another great video. Thanks!
I don't know why, but I enjoy watching this channel. Sawing logs of all things. Regardless, I am fascinated watching it. But, the personality and the continue talking me through the video keeps me engaged. He thinks out loud and that I think I really enjoy. I've watched other channels sawing logs and they put music to the cutting. Just not interested to listen to music and watch sawing. I am kind of amazed how much I enjoy the videos, which of course means I enjoy the presenters and the content. Very cool - thank you for sharing!
Nice to see people stopping by to say Hi. My wife and I have talked about making a trip your way some time. We might be able to see you there at the farmers market. But Hillary would be a good visit as well.
growing up the neighbor had a manual mill i used to offbear some, learned words like gee, haw, dammit tom-tom [usually after something happened like all four layers of the traces sounding like a gunshot as they parted] nobody ever told him he couldn`t move the world. learned the basics of sawmilling, took a couple or fifty years off toolmaking and trucking, now learning from you the finer details of sawing and building a hybrid low? budget circle/band with no band, mill up north of you west of meadville/ beaver center on the farm i grew up on! No team of Belgums now though. the detroit music reminds me of when i heard the 8V or 12V-71 it meant dad was home! keep up the great videos, i sometimes have to backtrack if i grab a catnap listening to the bus motor singing,,, love it!
We have our Remembrance Day here in the U.K. to coincide with the final moments of WW1 11AM 11th month (November) we wear poppies that recall those in the churned up shell pockmarked no man’s land. Pacifists sometimes wear white poppies. A somber day, this also undertaken in France. It seems that in every village large or small in rural France there’s a memorial with scores of names from both conflicts. The local pompiers (fire crews) and gendarmerie parade. We all remember, lest we forget. In Belgium at the menim gate in Ypres every single night the last post is sounded for the fallen in and around paschendale. sounds
When I built my 'big house' where I raised my two kids,,, my hardwood supplier called one day. He had a banded load of poplar on the truck that was supposed to go to a school district for shop class. Well, they could not accept,, but it was already on the truck,, and my guy knew I used poplar in pattern making, and high tech models,, but I was building a house. A full flatbed, 5,000 bdft,, and he sold it and delivered it for to cost of the surface 2 sides. Less than 10 cents a bdft. I used it in some of the exterior trim,, but it became nearly 100 window and door openings, I built my own windows and doors, stairway parts 150 spindles, hand rails. baseboards, window sills, book shelves fluted columns., right down to a pair of 3'0X8'0 french doors for the entry with a 6 foot half circle transom light above,,, I used that stuff everywhere. I love poplar. protect it from the weather,, holds paint better than any other wood, stains clear and beautiful and ages to a graceful brown. Astonishingly stable.
Popular grows like weeds around here, I don’t harvest them, but when they blow down I saw them for trim boards because they don’t have knots, but do have lots of stress in them, so lots of weight after stickers and banding.
What 3 log's I knew it ZZ comes back and production goes up😅. JK. Before I forget about it comment 😃. As always good luck and God bless and stay safe out there. Good to see all 4 of you guys together it's too bad buzz doesn't realize how much we want to know about him and his personality. Buzz ZZ Mark and T.H.E Thanks for letting us along.
had my sled dog team AND always had cats around too, cats are different names/ colors now, and am fresh out of dogs now but yours are getting to where you need to keep [one more thing to watch] a close eye on to avoid a disastrous situation happening. cute lil buggers but will learn how to be sawmill cats;; momma already seems to know how to stay out of trouble around machinery,, wait till they have sawmill names and are up in the cab "helping" you saw LOL
Thank you Mark thank you Eddie thank-yous Mark ZZ and anyone else who might have been helping you good show good show though like there was somebody there I didn't know
What if, just for the fun on it, you were to spray-paint a line from the pith to the bark of a log? It might be interesting to count how many times the log got turned in the sawing.
Try as she might, my Mom doesn’t even get close to cutting the beard! I needed to cut my hair as the 2nd 3 hr jump while I was away was causing me all kinds of vision grief. And I need to get the back of neck tanned to match the lower 2/3 of my arms!! Thanks for watching Bill!!
Wondering how does that hedge your work as far as how wide your boards are keeps changing on every board is there a crank on it that moves the blades just wondering how it worked
I happened to be watching another video and I saw a carriage similar to yours but it what I presume to be some sort of log kickers below the doggies could you please tell me what they are if you know thanks Peter W Melbourne Australia
Noting wrong with 1 common poplar if you are making small projects that will be painted or stained a dark color. It would work great for rustic applications that will be painted.
I'm glad ZZ returned (paroled) from his state funded vacation, they gave him time off for good beard braiding behavior. ZZ Top's drummer beardless Frank Beard once did have a beard early on.
Hey Rich, thanks for watching the movie! It is nice to be back with the boys sawing again, such good therapy when your trying to get your mind right. Braiding was one of the techniques I had to learn/use while I was away, and it works at the mill too! Appreciate your comments
@@mark6062 Don't cut short your calming mind-rightening basket weaving and license plate making skills. Just don't give TheEddie Walking Boss any back-sass, or Capt. Mark might send you to stay with 'The Boys From Brazil' this time. (Gregory Peck, Another be around 'The Boys' movie)
"butt log" and "screwin` in in the end" may have been a poor choice of words, mark. be careful, hate to see you, eddie & ZZ get censored for indecency. love the content, keep it up!
Sense Chewy has it's own name...why don't you name the master dog TOP DOG? It seems to be above the other 8 dogs, plus it's has the best view. Thanks for sharing your videos!
A video on the edger would be nice. And ZZ better get a tie clip for his beard before he bends over and gets it caught in a chainsaw or something (3:50). 😒
hello mark and eddies and mark zz it's is randy and i like yours video is cool thanks friends randy and boom boom boom boom boom boom boom boom boom boom boom boom boom boom boom and (baby cat mark and eddies )
like watching your videos! have trouble with North and South, shouldn't it be top and bottom? because north is not up and south is not down. Just saying.
Wow, Mark without a hat today. It is nice to see you guys. I love the moose and the wood backer makes it look nice. I just got my CNC working so that I can make metal art. Are there some trees that you will not cut, like willow or boxelder, that are just not worth the efforts or is there hope for every tree??????? I am glad you had enough help today.
