For a full Geometry credit in Saxon 3rd edition you have to complete Alg 1, Alg 2 and the 1st 60 lessons of Advanced Math. Each level covers about a third of the geometry credit.

Thank you! I came across a great video by Rainbow Resources that explains what you just shared very well. I have included it in the description box.

That's good to know! Looking at using Alg 1 with my HSer next year. Looking to switch from Teaching Textbooks Pre-Alg. Previously did Abeka, but have used Saxon in the past as well.

I really appreciate this. I have tried so hard to find out how Abeka math (specifically Pre-Algebra works) but can't find any specifics online or on RU-vid. How do I know it's right for my child without knowing how it actually teaches math? 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hi Julie, I am glad the video was helpful. 🤍 I know what you mean. I agree that seeing a look inside/ overall structure & layout is so helpful when researching curriculum. I wasn’t able to find any flip-through videos for Abeka upper level math, just this “look inside” link on their website www.abeka.com/abekaonline/BookDescription.aspx?sbn=319155 We only used Abeka math for lower elementary grades so, I unfortunately can’t speak too much as to how they teach upper level math. I hope you find what you are looking for 🙂

So horizons math grade 6 (in the 5th grade?) led up right into Algebra 1/2 in the 6th grade for your son? I'm just curious. My kid is very small but I tutor saxon Algebra 2 to homeschooled highschoolers. They have the option to take advanced math and calculus in 2- 4 years (1-2 years in advanced math and 1-2 years in calculus). Even though they use 3rd edition saxon, they also take a separate geometry class since the other maths (after algebra 2) are electives. It seems easier to build the algebra foundation early and take those upper level maths over 4 years instead of two, so they can really know calculus entering college. But you have to finish algebra 2 in 8th grade and skip a standalone geometry, which is what you're setting your son up for and I'm just trying to figure out how you did that. Was his school prior to homeschooling just ahead or something?

Hi! Our oldest son really enjoys math and enjoyed the challenge of learning more. We started homeschooling him in 5th grade so the track we took with him was: *5th grade (5th grade Abeka & 6th grade horizons math) *6th grade (Saxon Algebra 1/2) *7th grade (Saxon Algebra 1) For 8th grade planning (Saxon Algebra 2) Our Second son is also strong in math so we are doing 5th and 6th grade Horizons with him this year and will probably follow the same course track with him. (Each Horizons level has 2 books. So we do Book 1 and Book 2 of the 5th grade level and just Book 2 of the 6th grade level. This allows them to complete both courses in one school year. (Many of the first lessons in book 1 of Horizons books is a review of things learned in the previous year, so it works out well for us.) We look at each of our children’s needs individually so we may choose a different track for our youngest (currently in 3rd grade ). Hope this answers your question. :-)

@@HisArrowsOurHands thank you for your quick response! putting 5th and 6th grade math together makes it all clear now, thanks! My hubby is an electrical engineer too and I majored in Physics, so we are "math" people. Our boys are way too young to know if they are math people yet, but teaching other people's children really makes me overly excited about the forward planning for my own kids 😅 and I really love the results of a student well versed in highschool Saxon math (definitely college math ready).

Hi, I know this comment is a bit late haha but I have a question, Does Algebra 1/2 require the child to use a calculator at any point? Thank you ❤️❤️

Hi Jessica 😊 a calculator is not required. I am sure it is at the discretion of the instructor whether to allow calculators… we had our boys complete all the computing themselves at this level.
