With enough skill and ear training it is definitely possible and plenty of people can do this, not saying I can but when you spend that much time working, it makes sense.

I mean…. It’s a skill that is learned and practiced for hundreds, even thousands of hours. It’s a part of every higher education program that trains musicians. It is a skill anyone can develop through hard work (barring those with genuine auditory processing issues). It’s not an innate gift.

My piano teacher would sometimes say "Oh I played this song like 15 years ago, it goes something like this" and proceeded to play it perfectly from memory, I've played the piano for over 12 years and I swear there must be a point where all the music theory clicks and you just unlock something... Otherwise I'll never understand how he does it lol

I'm not sure if that's the case though, because my teacher always gave the reasoning as to how the melody flows and he can reconstruct it from that (for example, subdominant, dominant, tonic or whatever sequence it follows). Basically he doesn't need to remember each note by itself, but since he understands the logic behind the passages, he can reconstruct it

This is not a simple thing to do, it’s just when you’ve been doing something for a long time it seems simple to you. But playing a song by ear is not simple, many lifelong musicians cannot do that.
