SAYING GOODBYE TO MY BEST MATE, MY BUDDY
Nothing can prepare you for a loss of someone or something close to you.
It was a normal day traveling to our favourite spot in the Pilbara to camp up. We had been traveling with family that had come up to get away from the cold winter in Perth WA.
We had spent a night a Cheela Plains Station Stay and where slowly making our way back to Karratha.
We had decided to stop of at Robe River Rest Area , which we had stopped at many times before. The river was full of fresh water so we had taken the grand kids for a walk with Tonka in tow.
Stopping so Tonka could have a swim. We had been swimming here on other occasions and he just jump right in.
We had parked up surrounded by other campers and dogs and Tonka eating a poison was the last thing on my mind.
He started to shiver and as he had just been for a swim I thought he was could. As time went on the shivering got worse, he could no longer stand and once he started convulsing, I knew it was inevitable.
I cried and cried, talked to him and let him know how much he meant to me and that he was loved.
We watched the sun go down as he took his last breath with family and friends and new friends we had only just meet around him.
I decided to bury him here as I travel through this area and will be able to visit him regularly. Wrapped in his blanket he has had since he was a pup and his favourite teddy under the shade of a white gum.
Tonka was hardly ever off lead and he picked up the bait presuming in the long grass next to where we had parked the van.
This could have happened to anyone as that day there had been about 6 other dogs also traveling.
This was just bad luck.
As there was no signs that baits could be in the area a council worker had let us know that signs would now be going up to warn other travellers.
This happened all so quickly and there was nothing anyone could have done.
I'm just grateful Tonka and I where not alone and had the love and support of others.
