SB19: "Mana" Wish Bus Reaction 

Nobody knows SB19 at first, when they started to get famous (to fly), critics started to pull them down. They said, the hate you tell us (doubts on their abilities and talents), we can't even hear you anymore coz we are so up high in the sky (emphasizing airplane level). Can't you see, we're just chillin up here, but still humble coz our feet are grounded. Heaven (idols) earth (fans) unite, just believe. Haters don't sleep on our talents coz one day we will surprise you! Brrahh!

the growl is the style, it has nothing to do with the language but Filipino singers loves to do that.

Manananggal is a mythical creature here. One whose body cuts in half at night, with the upper body flying off in order to hunt and feed off of people. *They used it to symbolize them flying high but still keeping their feet on the ground.* Mana is one of the fan favorites despite the lack of MV. There are many live performances as well. But by far, their performance of *Mana from YTFF 2021* is my favorite.

"MANA" is not simply a shortened version of "manananggal." Through clever wordplay, Pablo transforms "MANA" from an abbreviation into a multifaceted concept. Rather than directly referencing the mythical creature, "MANA" means inheritance and receiving blessings. Pablo enriches the song "MANA" by subtly linking it to the manananggal, a creature from Filipino folklore. The symbolism here is profound. The manananggal is a mythical creature known for splitting its body in two: an upper body that flies away and a lower body that remains grounded. This imagery mirrors the band's journey. Despite their soaring success and powerful performances on stage, akin to the flying upper body of the manananggal, they stay humble and connected to their roots, represented by the grounded lower body. This humility and groundedness are seen as an inheritance they share with their fans, fostering a deep and lasting bond. Moreover, the upper body of the manananggal symbolizes the band's prowess as "live monsters." On stage, they transform into formidable performers, exuding power and commanding presence, capable of conquering various stages with their dynamic performances. Yet, despite this impressive stage presence, they remain grounded, signifying humility and rootedness amidst their success. "MANA" isn't just about passing down music; it represents a legacy. The band views their songs as gifts to their fans, something that will remain even when the band members are no longer present. Their music is intended to continue uplifting and inspiring their audience, serving as a lasting source of joy and motivation.

Mananangal is a filipino mythical creature. Beautiful Women with long hair that can separate their upper body from their bottom body. The upper body can fly, to feed and eat people. lol.

Mana can mean inheritance/legacy, and in this song, a play on "manananggal", a mythical vampiric creature of the night. It is human during the day, and at night splits its body into half--the lower body stays on the ground while the upper body grows wings and hunts humans, mostly the sleeping. In the song, it is used to symbolise their promise to keep themselves grounded even when they soar high. They chose a feared monster to represent them, as a sarcastic metaphor to how much they used to be hated on perhaps because they were shaking up the status quo (hence the line "Are we monsters to be feared?"). The symbolism also helps them drive home the message in the final line of the song "Don't sleep on us, or else." Pablo wrote this song when a lot of hate was still coming their way, and these lyrics show that they knew that their hard work and talent were being undermined by the hatred and various stereotypes they were being put in, hence that message. The wordplay into "mana" (inheritance/legacy), lets them easily slide in the message "You don't see it now, but one day, you will understand our legacy." It's not bravado, and they do say that they will always keep themselves grounded, but it shows through this song, that they know what they bring to the Philippine music industry in which, for a time, they were outsiders. It's a very beautiful song because of its meaning esp in the context of their journey, and also because it is one of those songs that is so successful in highlighting each member's contribution to the group dynamic. Easily one of my favourites from them, and this Wish Bus performance is what got me addicted to SB19.

Mana choreo at YTFF is very theatrical, it's the best for me

Stell, our thirst trap king LOL Mana is like almost every A'tin's sleeper fave. Mana can also mean 'heritage' or 'inheritance' but also it's from the mana in Manananggal which someone already mentioned, for context it's a mythical creature in the Philippines, they're women at night that split their body from their torso to the lower part of its body. They have a vampiric appearance on their upper body as they have wings and fangs, whilst their lower body are hidden until before the sun rises. The use of manananggal is metaphorical for the song as the boys mean they will keep their feet on the ground even as they soar and fly higher and higher, so even if they get even more famous, they want to keep themselves grounded. I love it

Mana is definitely one of the fandom's favorites. Their live performances of Mana is insane. It can go from very theatrical to just absolute party banger. And that choreo is fantastic. Undoubtedly, one of SB19's best choreos.

Manananggal is a mythical woman monster creature native to the remote parts of the Philippines who appears mostly in the ghosting hours of the night and its notorious feature is the upper body from the waist separates from the lower body and the upper body flies to seek its victim... hence the reference to an airplane and the view from the top (sky)... it's both a metaphor and a direct reference to bashers...

While Tagalog (one of the many Filipino languages and one they’re using here) has pretty hard consonants and open vowels, I wouldn’t say the sounds are harsh enough to translate naturally to growls. Those are deliberate stylistic choices (even Ken and Pablo, who have more textured voices, can sing clean). Love that you guys take the time to give substantive, insightful comments.

To give further context to this song, a manananggal is a vampire-like monster that can bisect its body. Its upper half has bat-like wings that enable it to fly in search of prey, while its lower half remains safe and hidden on the ground. In the song, SB19 uses it as a metaphor for flying to great heights while staying grounded, and also playing with monster elements in the song (growls, insane laughter) juxtaposed with their monster success.

The Filipino language is heavily sprinkled with Spanish words and phrases. The Philippines being a former Spanish colony for over 300 years, definitely adopted the sounds of the language. This may be the reason for the "rolling Rs".

Pablo writes most of the songs. He does a lot of wordplay. For example, in the song Mana it is meant to be short for Manananggal (a monstrous mythical creature in Filipino folklore) but Mana also means Inheritance.

I know wish bus is a good way to listen to their individual vocals as well as harmony but, if you enjoy live vocals with choreography, this kind of song is much better appreciated with the live performance under concerts, showing the choreography and interpretation of this song. Also, if you are planning on checking out Bazinga, I suggest you do the music video because they have a really one. You could also check out there live concert performance with dance choreography. This songs are better on live concert performances or music videos , unless you are only focusing on vocals, then wish bus is the way to go but if you’re looking on the overall performance when it comes to production, interpretation I suggest MV or live concert .

He performed an electric guitar, dark rock hiphop EDM on Day 1 of Pagtatag Finale Manila. But who knows whats in it because he is very diverse with his genre. I would say Ken creates his own genre😀.
