While the Americans worked their way up the Solomons chain, another Allied advance was pushing the Japanese out of the other major Southwest Pacific theater, the island of New Guinea. Navy dive-bombers assisted in some of the last major landing operations against the Japanese here, supporting the attack on Hollandia and Aitape. Supporting operations by an interallied fleet in the Indian ocean saw the dive bombers of the veteran carrier Saratoga launch raids against the occupied Dutch East Indies under the command of a Royal Navy admiral. The success of the New Guinea landings coupled with the suppression of the stubborn Japanese resistance on Bougainville meant that the Allied pincers in the Southwest Pacific were finally closed, and the Japanese position here finished.
